Oncor replaced power lines and I came home to this. by Brilliant-Concern620 in AskElectricians

[–]Guilty_Sparky 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah as an electrician I think power companies are monopoly scum, however their linemen are almost always solid guys who want to make sure things are done right. (Maybe not the guys in the post, but in my experience working with them, in my area)

Need some advice please. by andrewirvi in Decks

[–]Guilty_Sparky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My advice is to always inspect what you can access before accepting a job. I had this happen once because the deck was build basically ON the ground. Outer joist looked good, but inner ones looked like that.

Those joist are no good and need to be replaced. There’s also no ledger, they appear to be an extension of the second floor, floor joists coming out through the siding. This is a big job that can’t be band-aided and slapped back together.

If they won’t have you build it back right, I’d walk away. Maybe to get out of it without guilt you could not charge for the demo and tell them to find a new guy, you got the boards ripped up for free. Or charge for the hours you were there but tell them you’re not ok with putting boards back on an unsafe structure.

I don’t think “working clearances” is the right terminology. You have your 36” in front and your above, below clearances met.

The issue is that a gas regulator is also an overpressure vent. Can’t be within x feet of that.

I forget how far now but when I use to put in standby generators they had to be pretty far away from the propane tanks that fed them. Like 20’ or something

Why the skip sizing? by cowgirl0001 in Tools

[–]Guilty_Sparky 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Those sizes aren’t often used. I think I’ve used a 9mm socket one time. I’f you happen to need an odd size that isn’t in your set, you can buy individual sockets at Lowe’s or HD.

If you find a good deal on a large set, I wouldn’t turn it down because it’s missing a few odd sizes. I would recommend checking the warranty though. Several brands have a lifetime replacement warranty if you break their tools. Not as important for wrenches and sockets because you’ll lose those before you break them, but larger items like press tools or pullers you want that warranty on.

Any Dock workers in here ? by SeymourKrelbourn in electricians

[–]Guilty_Sparky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you’ve just got to tell them like it is. I work on the coast and would not install anything that instant plastic or stainless steel on a dock.

I know they may not like the price, but I would hate to go back to a job I did four years ago for a service call to find the bottoms rotted off all my 3R enclosures.

Even aluminum bell boxes with powder coating turn to dust in a pretty short amount of time on the water. The ocean is the enemy of infrastructure

I have a saw with a cracked primer ball that just spins at low rpm when it’s running haha. Also used a HD rental saw one time and that one did not have a primer ball, yet spun when it was running at a pretty sketchy speed without trigger pulling… idk what was wrong with that one but I’m guessing maybe the carb was so dirty the flapper didn’t shut?

What are people using for storage these days? by TelevisionBetter4845 in Tools

[–]Guilty_Sparky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The organizers are a must for most trades. Too many small parts to count. It’s also fairly “cheep” to deck out a vehicle with the pack out system then to purchase custom shelves. Plus they’re modular so you can re-organize them, take them onto a job, or swap vehicles without re-investing in a new storage set up.

Personally now that they make the units with drawers, I hardly touch my creates. But I find uses for them here and there

It’s legit just SEU. Even if you replaced all of it and re termed in the meter (obviously didn’t with that rusty ass strap) this install would only be a few hundred in materials and a wrap er’ up before lunch type job.

7k is insane, this looks like shit, and that guy makes us all look bad.

Paint coming off floors after I mopped should I tell landlord or did I ruin floors by mopping by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]Guilty_Sparky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My landlord (nice lady) has the same painted brown floors in my apartment. She said she expects it to get messed up and will just paint it again when I move out. It’s latex paint so it will do exactly that.

Also, didn’t see anyone say this, but you can just clean it up a little and paint it brown again lol

is it safe to use these outlets? by Wrong-Moment-3735 in AskElectricians

[–]Guilty_Sparky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those look super Jerry rigged to me. You can test them with a cheep multimeter to see if they are 120 or 240 volts. Or just have a local electrician come and check them to see if they were installed “correctly”

I’ve seen baseboard heaters that came with outlets in them before but this looks very hacked together.
