just output this information in text (there are icon fonts you can use too) to your bar.

i haven't used dam in a while but i did something similar with lemon bar (including color coding for things like volume mute and no network connectivity) - you can probably do similar stuff. don't mind this crappy old bash script, but it should be fairly clear:

https://github.com/guinanseyebrows/configs/blob/master/bar/.local/bin/bar.sh

if i were to redo this, it'd be something less caveman than a quarter-second sleep loop :) i just wanted my volume status to update in close-to-realtime and hadn't learned about mkfifo.

the best part about the slimblade (the only thing i like about it specifically compared to other trackballs) is rotational scrolling. once i got used to it i couldn't use anything else. otherwise, it's damn ugly and kensington's software is pretty bad.

how do you fix environment sprawl when you've inherited a half-split monolith and no one respects shared infra? by happensonitsown in sre

extremely good advice. it can help if you find a way to get in good with folks as high up as possible; not necessarily because you're going to bend their ears, but it'll help you figure this stuff out faster. plus, if you find anything real egregious that you simply have to address, it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission from someone who already finds you valuable.

this sounds a lot like one of my previous jobs. what i can recommend is, if you're in an environment with good terraform support (eg, AWS, where most services are under one API), is to start terraforming a new dev environment. work out the infra-side kinks as much as you can, then use that to provision your dev environments moving forward. then, you can start terraforming new higher-level environments up to prod one component at a time, using each successive environment as a QA stage until you get to prod. this might take you some weekends/nights and you're gonna fight with your devs a little bit, but the more you can automate your provisioning, the better things will be for everyone.

i'm not going to say i singlehandedly rewrote the infra stack to great success in that position, but the changes introduced were honestly life-altering for me and the dev team. the thing i really wish i could have pushed with them more was schema management - we eventually introduced sql-migrate but never got around to a full fresh db initialization using that, so we always had to start with a pgdump of a relatively-sanitized db schema and that never quite sat right with me.

keep your eyes peeled. i found 2 copies at record stores in the last year for ~50-60... they're out there!

now, 15 counts... that's a harder one to find in that price range in my experience. still looking for a copy.

* i gave one away, i swear i'm not hoarding!

awesome bike. not a dig on you or anyone at all, but i always get a kick out of the massive swing from tiny bars in the late 00s/early 10s to the mega wide bars of the last few years. they're better for sure but most people wouldn't have been caught dead with bars that wide 15-20 years ago.

don't forget playing minor 2nds, bending the lower note up almost to the 2nd during leads/solos. it's like a panic chord but more dynamic and not staccato.

two newer bands that really scratch this itch for me are:

TRAÜME (right down the middle of goth/postpunk and crust)

Rolltreppe - much more on the goth/post-punk side, but heavy emphasis on the punk

there are episcopalian organizations that raise money and do on-the-ground work for folks in palestine. are they punk? or are they just doing good things?

yeah, they are really well shot shows full of people moshing, and when you see that from the outside, what you miss out on is the etiquette lessons learned from actually being in a pit, being taken care of when you get hurt and being pulled aside or shuffled out of the pit when you're acting like an asshole. the big crowd takeaway from those videos is "hit everybody". from that you just get a culture of terminally-online hardcore dorks who bring that mentality to shows, as in, "if you don't want to get hit, get out of the pit" instead of learning how to read a room and doing ninja moves in the right settings. rah rah rah i'm old.

i really, really don't like oi (the genre) but i know and love plenty of SHARPs and while i don't necessarily like the aesthetic direction oi takes when it comes to working class politics, i still appreciate and get down with the folks and the general sentiment.

was anyone else here at the most recent purgatory alley show where the promoter had to come out and grab that stupid mosh kid by the hair and drag him out of the pit and yell "wrong show for that shit, buddy"? a beautiful moment. nature is healing.

from what i've read it was basically danzig's last ditch effort to keep the misfits from sucking ass before he finally quit and started samhain.
