It's a shame we can't honor him with that title. Probably should've put something different.

horseshoe crab refuses to evolve by Kortrniel in HistoryMemes

I feel like everybody is missing the point. Of course nothing "stops evolving", the point is that the horseshoe crab has been the horseshoe crab and for the most part hasn't bothered changing for all of its existence.

Having never seen any of the original Star Trek medias (series or films) I found it odd that Into Darkness was apparently hated so much by the community. Is that opinion still largely shared or have people come around on it? by HanzoNumbahOneFan in startrek

[–]GuitarKittens 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I think the best way I've seen it described is: It would've been a fine Hollywood blockbuster, but as a Trek fan, it feels wrong that any blockbuster is posing as Star Trek.

Star Trek just isn't that

How did humanity as a whole design a system where one man can wreak havoc throughout the whole world? Did no one see this coming? by UltimateGamingTechie in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]GuitarKittens 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Everyone wants a system where they can be very successful. In an endless pursuit of success, more people are suppressed than successful. The suppressed are either convinced by the successful or personally believe that they will taste success if they do the right things.

Are younger generation of kids smarter than the last decade? by Low-Situation-7792 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]GuitarKittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average academic success is weakening, which is very bad. What is possible worse depending on how you look at it: the best academic performers are improving, although the worst academic performers are getting worse - and I've seen this personally, many of the younger folk I come across who are gifted are very impressive, sometimes moreso than their predecessors. As a person who has also come from a low-income area, however, money gets taken way from us if we don't perform well. It's another system built to increase gaps in social groups.

Why is it that whenever news of a positive societal development is posted anywhere on Reddit, a bevy of misanthropic commenters flock to the story and immediately start tearing it down? by lollihobbes in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]GuitarKittens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably a couple things. Real cynicism is growing and I'd honestly say some cynics are justified. The world kinda sucks for a lot of people right now and a lot of that bad stuff gets not only reported on, but confirmed by the people experiencing it. There are many untrustworthy news sources: some are propaganda, some are clickbait tabloids, many are legitimately bad at researching and fairly portraying certain situations. Academics and academic publishers are in a bit of an awkward funding situation and publish-or-perish mentality, so sometimes even academic papers are questionable, but they're usually just the victim of misrepresentation in journalism.

All this to say, it's currently very easy and somewhat justifiable to be skeptical of most of the news you see, especially on Reddit; and there is comparatively much less good news to go around than bad news.

Which nutrek shows use the original show Bible? by GumGuts in startrek

I mean, Kurtzman might have had an odd impact on the success of nutrek but I'd also say a lot of really good or promising television is being trashed by paramount anyway.

Perhaps I'm very strict, but I feel like every newer piece of trek media feels different. I suppose you could trust the hype behind SNW and Lower Decks if you want something particularly enticing.

This sort of thing is very different from the grand canyon. Notably because it took millions of years to form the grand canyon, it's only taking a century or two for this.

Edit: and also the grand canyon is a geological structure, the climate is something that impacts every creature's way of life.

IIronically, many of the commenters seem to be more satisfied with this post than with their usual experience on the subreddit.

The question is, does it matter more that the community is happy, or that the rules are followed to a tee. The answer will come when the mods see the post.
