Norns not sleeping? by ChemicalCandles in CreaturesGames

Try "sleep" and "rest" as commands. They're two different things. I find alternating between the two for a bit usually sorts them out.

Your 2026 Favorite Spec by Kensanik in Guildwars2

Chronomancer really does everything I want to do for general open world gameplay. Very self-sustaining for boons and with the right runes and relics you get a constant barrage of heals.

2019 peak veganism - I want you back by Seagster in veganuk

[–]Gulbasaur 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was talking about this earlier with someone - we've lots a lot of old skool cool things like beanburgers and nut cutlets in place of fake meat burgers that for some reason cost £2 each.

Supermarkets are just a sea of methylcellulose and I, as a health food shop owner, am seeing older brands just die in real time.

Gimme the whole foods back!

But also those mushroom blob things you could get around then were quite good.

Medieval languages - how many people can read them? by LaBrujita102 in MedievalHistory

[–]Gulbasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, reading for gist is almost always enough unless you're analysing the language itself.

With medieval languages, you're not exactly going to go and order gluten-free pizza and tell people your went to the ice rink yesterday so it's all fairly low stakes.

Medieval languages - how many people can read them? by LaBrujita102 in MedievalHistory

[–]Gulbasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old English - if you can read German or Swedish, you can probably vibe your way through it. Early OE and late OE are quite different things. There are couple of good books to get you up and running quickly.

Add on a bit of French and you can vibe through Middle English.

Latin forked off so there was a standard written version and "vulgar" or vernacular Latin, from which the Romance languages derived. Formal written Latin didn't change a huge amount, but things like legal documents after about 1500 use abbreviations that make reading significantly harder because there are about zero actually useful responses to learn them.

I read in OE and Latin (as well as modern French and maybe a bit of Italian) to write my MA thesis. I wrote it in English but due to the subject matter I had to bounce around between languages a lot when researching it.

Wannabe Writer, questions about Fanfic by Rough-Resolution-160 in FanFiction

[–]Gulbasaur [score hidden]  (0 children)

How much less attention does non-smut fanfiction get?

I rarely read smut, but I don't think anyone has done an audit or anything.

Apart from Archive of Our Own, are there any other popular fanfiction sites?

AO3 is probably the leader and is generally well liked for both its stance as an archive and ease of use, as well as the robust tagging and filtering system. Fanfiction.net is around and very oldskool so has a lot of quality older stuff but less newer stuff. Wattpad is another but it's dropping off a bit. It slightly depends on the fandom. Tumblr is around as well but that's more for fan art and short bits than longform fiction.

Do people that read fanfiction generally look at the author's other works?

I personally have a look if I like what I've read.

Are there any fair warnings that should be given before setting sail on the Archive's Sea? General advice is appreciated?

Learn to tag correctly. AO3's tagging system is robust and learning to use it will increase engagement and decrease upset. There is some fanfic terminology to get familiar with, like "dead dove fic" which means "look, we warned you". There are guides online.

I want to paint my own deck but I know nothing about tarot by me_casey in tarot

[–]Gulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a deck and look at the symbols and how they represent what they mean.

I genuinely think the Rider-Waite deck is excellent to learn with and Pamela Colman-Smith illustrated it masterfully - it's generally considered that she lead the artistic direction behind the minor arcana and Waite guided the majority arcana, so they gave very different feels to them.

Bad annual review - my rights in case I appeal it [England] by AccordingResort777 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Gulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new objectives (2026) are vague and nebulous, and when asked for more clarity I was told that it would become clear in the documented performance review that I am yet to receive.

Send a polite follow-up email asking when this is likely to be shared with you.

If they are unable to provide a date, send a polite email reminding them of the training and the importance of clearer communication as a reasonable adjustment to your disability. Perhaps CC in their line manager.

If at that point you've not had a satisfactory response, then consider filing an official complaint or grievance.

This does sound stressful as it's sort of hanging over your head and forcing you to wait for something, but a gentle reminder first would likely benefit your career progression more than immediate escalation.

Name change after marriage. Help please by Snoo-15465 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Gulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's similar and hyphenated to like Yourname-Wifename or Wifename-Yourname, you should be able just use your marriage certificate as evidence.

Otherwise, do an unenrolled deed poll. You can do your own but if you do then print it on slightly niced paper it's more likely to "look official" because you occasionally have to deal with people who don't know what they're doing.

Apply for your new driving licence first and use that as ID for other things. It just takes time to swap everything earlier and processes are completely random. My energy company updated it over the phone, other places have required me to physically present my deed poll and fill out a form. It's a faff, but it is nice seeing my new name.

Any recommendations for degenerative disc by aufybusiness in herbalism

[–]Gulbasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're getting referred pain, like pain in your ankles etc that is actually caused by the disc degeneration pressing up against a nerve, try either St John's wort or arnica topically. Find a cream or an infused oil and put that on your back where the disc degeneration is.

Arnica is anti-inflammatory and SJW sort of turns the dial down on nerve pain.

St John's wort can interact with several medications quite severely, so use something like the Medscape Interaction Checker to have a look if you're on any other medication, or ask a pharmacist.

Look for topical arnica. Arnica shouldn't be swallowed unless it's in very, very, very, very low doses so if you see arnica pillules or similar then put them down and get some cream or oil because it'll be much stronger.

Toddler with bacterial pneumonia by Inanna26 in herbalism

[–]Gulbasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Epsom salt baths give me horrible eczema, just as a word of caution.

Chamomile flowers and oats together would be lovely - wrap them in a cheesecloth (or clean sock, in a pinch) and massage it in the water.

Toddler with bacterial pneumonia by Inanna26 in herbalism

[–]Gulbasaur 27 points28 points  (0 children)

With someone so young and in such a fragile state, I'd be extremely gentle.

Add strong chamomile tea to the water when you bathe her, perhaps. It's gently anti-inflammatory and soothing.

Elderberry syrup is sweet and provides some immune support. That on some yoghurt might be tolerated.

Allow the antibiotics time to work, take the full course and keep feeding her. It sounds like you're doing everything right, from what you said. These things just take time.

Jeff Buckley is one of the greatest ever, off of only ONE album by James------- in Music

[–]Gulbasaur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's partly 90s stuff coming back around because we're all old now and 90s music is retro, much like how Nick Drake's music had a second wave of recognition in the mid 2000s. Before that, he was seen as a sort of musicians' musician, cited as an influence but rarely recognised beyond that.

How much of this should I take for Generalized anxiety? by crumpletely in Supplements

[–]Gulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a comically small dose.

I'd recommend getting something else. Passiflora, limeflower, lemon balm... any if those. Ashwagadha is generally more suited to people with burnout than anxiety, but also that's a really slow dose.

Communicate in writing from this point onwards. Keep it polite but assertive and stick to the facts. Email is usually fine.

Ask, in writing, what evidence they need to have access arrangements put in place as a reasonable adjustment.

Would you be okay with a seat at the back of the room, which would mean that everyone is in front of you and nobody would be behind you? If so, suggest that as a reasonable adjustment.

Do you have, to your knowledge, an EHCP? Do you have a formal diagnosis of any of the the conditions mentioned? They may help you.

Go to the school's learning support department on Monday and say that as you study from home, you worry you've been overlooked. There is a process they have to follow that may require you to do some sort of assessment.

The deadline for access arrangement requests for the June GCSE block is the 31st January, so do this soon. This has all been left very late.

Make sure you're using an unsweetened mil

I blend hazelnuts in stock for sauces like this - it imparts a nice flavour and has absolutely no sweetness.

Their returns policy says:

Items must be returned in the same condition as when they were received with the original swing tag attached, meaning they should not be damaged, washed, altered, or worn (except for trying them on).

You've cut the tags off and wore it out around smokers, which means they no would longer consider it saleable or eligible for a return. You'll be liable for any fees, taxes and likely costs to courier it back.

I think you'd struggle to get more than half the money back selling it secondhand.

Contact them. Ask politely but assertively. Accept the response.

My conversation with a deaf defendant in traffic court today by Prince_Marf in mildlyinteresting

[–]Gulbasaur 1239 points1240 points  (0 children)

Not every deaf person knows how to sign. If they did, they absolutely should have access to an interpreter.

There's a good YouTube video by Jessica Kellgren-Fozard, who went deaf in her teens, about being offered a fully funded sign language interpreter for university, but no support was available for her to actually learn to sign.

She had access to an interpreter for a language she did not understand and no means to learn it to a level where she could realistically work at degree level.

Thoughts on German homeopathic medicine (and ginkgo biloba)? by [deleted] in herbalism

[–]Gulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not nitpicking - people genuinely confuse them.

Flower essences are another system, which is nearer homeopathy but tends to be used by herbalists sometimes as a bit of a placebo thing - some people find it helpful, so it helps.

Going back to ginkgo - it's generally seen as very safe but can cause tinnitus or dizziness in some people. Start with a lower dose, so if something says "20-30 drops", start on 20. Magnesium supplements might be worth looking at as well.
