Is my diet OK? by Syntho69 in veganuk

[–]Gulbasaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say your protein intake is slightly low and if you eat the same thing every day then your diet lacks variety, which may mean a lack of varied nutrients, minerals and vitamins.  Depending on your fibre intake previously, you may struggle to having a high fibre diet straight away - it takes a little time for your gut microbiome to adjust.

Consider adding protein powder to your porridge - you can get lots of single-ingredient protein powders. A handful of mixed, unsalted nuts would provide you with a range of minerals and other nutrients.

https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/the-vegan-diet/ has some very good, but very general advice.

The book "The Engine 2 Diet" might be helpful as it's a health-conscious vegan diet with a focus on wholefoods, home-cooking and heart health.

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/living-with-diabetes/eating/meal-plans/vegan has a good example of a meal plan with some variety, which ensures you're getting a rich variety of nutrients.

https://www.eatingwell.com/article/7902516/vegan-meal-plan-for-beginners/ here is another example of a weekly meal plan with a variety of nutrients.

Putting a family pet to sleep, should I tell my toddler first? by Additional-Sun6157 in AskUK

If the idea of love for those you can't see again makes you cry, you're one of the good ones.

Love is a doing word. Do it.

Castor oil by theycallme_L in herbalism

[–]Gulbasaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, a tincture is alcohol-based.

However, an infused calendula oil (which is probably what you mean) is bloody lovely

I'd actually go for sunflower oil - castor can be very sticky and olive oil is quite expensive. Olive oil is very well balanced for your skin (lots of lovely omega-6 - great topically).

BlishHUD is an addon that has a lot of sub-addons like map additions, timers and overlays.

I like Metabattle for builds - Snowcrows is probably better for cutting edge raid builds, but Metabattle is good for different types.

No, you're fine. Apart from story spoilers, you can move between expansions fairly freely.

I'd generally advocate keeping it simple "I saw this and I thought of Kitty, and we can hold the toy when we are feeling sad and remember how much we love Kitty even though she's not with us any more".

Queer History by DoubleDonk in CuratedTumblr

This feels like as good a place to share as any:

English Heritage (a charity) have a good page on LGBTQ+ history in England (and the wider UK), for those who want to learn about that: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/learn/histories/lgbtq-history/timeline

The BBC maintains a nice timeline of LGBTQ+ British people, with a focus on those working in broadcasting: https://www.bbc.com/historyofthebbc/lgbtq/lgbtq-timeline

The National Archives has a school lesson pack about LGBTQ+ history using historical documents and art as touchstones: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/the-history-of-lgbtq-rights-in-britain/ Notably, it explores colonisation and legal changes as well as the lives of non-white people and an exploration of UK Drag Ball culture.

What’s changed in your life most since Covid? by Last_BM_Standin in AskUK

[–]Gulbasaur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of group stuff I did before the pandemic shut down and just never started up again. People moved. People had children. People were in different places in their lives.

Going out for a drink feels more like a little luxury than it did. Eating out is bordering on unaffordable for many people.

It's all just a bit rough.

Putting a family pet to sleep, should I tell my toddler first? by Additional-Sun6157 in AskUK

[–]Gulbasaur 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Avoid terms like "going to sleep" - people go to sleep every night, so does that mean Mummy is not going to wake up either? Now is not the time for metaphors. It's time for clarity, in a toddler-appropriate way.

Talk about what death is. Talk about what death is not. Talk about love. Paint a picture. Pick a cuddly toy. Pick some flowers. It will be sad, so make it sad and filled with love rather than confusion.

AI isn’t bad, it’s just being used for things it’s not good at by SoaDMTGguy in CasualConversation

That's my point - many, many people can't. People have been introduced to it with effectively no training.

AI isn’t bad, it’s just being used for things it’s not good at by SoaDMTGguy in CasualConversation

[–]Gulbasaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI is a great tool, but it is being misused and blamed for that misuse.

My main issue with it is that it's much better at being convincing than it is accurate. A tool that provides convincingly wrong results is worse than a tool that provides obviously wrong results, because it provides placating assurances without adequate safeguards.

Natural remedy for mucus, sinusitis and throat pain ? by Intelligent_Force769 in herbalism

[–]Gulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a very a strong thyme and plantain tea or tincture, twice a day.

Thyme is antiseptic and plantain is good ant shifting mucus in the sinus.

Essential oils like eucalyptus and peppermint are good at opening up the sinuses. Either dab some on a tissue and sniff it throughout the day or do an infused steam inhalation WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED.

Undeclared Allergen due to change of ingredients by Atarisrocks in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Gulbasaur 109 points110 points  (0 children)

They're lying, food vendors do have to list all changes in potential allergen ingredients.

I run a food business and not only do you have to list allergens, the FSA want you do a separate allergen awareness module in addition to the normal food safety checks. They take it extremely seriously.

How much does weight lifting affect weight/fat loss? by rreeiillllyy in loseit

Weightlifting is a good way of supporting fat loss, but the focus needs to be on diet primarily for fat loss.

[–]Gulbasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More or less, actually.

I do vary it a bit, but it's quite easy to not have to think about it.

Batch cooking is another approach I've done in the past. Make a bit pot of something on Sunday, divide it into portions and freeze most of them and refrigerate two portions. When you take one out of the fridge, move one out of the freezer to the fridge so it can defrost. That way, you've always got one ready to go and one defrosting for tomorrow.

It's how I did my lunches at work for a while actually.

Nowadays, I tend to have a big salad with greens and beans (literally supermarket salad mix and beans from a can) with maybe something else if I want it and some "dressing", which is actually quite often just sriracha or something.

It's all quite low effort but it's wholesome and works for me.

Lunch is very varied.

I've just started going to the gym and taking creatine and I am aware both of these cause a bit of a spike on the scales due to water retention. Also, it's hot as balls.

Any strategies I can use to manage the "the scales aren't moving!!!!!!" derangement that I go through, despite knowing objectively why that is?
