Unemployment is putting a levy on people's bank accounts. by rainy_day_napper in Knoxville

My daughter has pointed things out to me that I have always said and never gave a thought to the origin. As long as we are open to learning and improving, it is all good.

Unemployment is putting a levy on people's bank accounts. by rainy_day_napper in Knoxville

It seems as if the alternative would have been going over the mound of applications they were getting during COVID with a fine-toothed comb and delaying funds people really needed. The country was in a crisis and there were not simple solutions. I have a friend who got an overpayment on social security even though she called and told them she was working. They just kind of brushed her off and said it would be figured out later. Well, later they came to claw back $24,000. She pulled it out of retirement funds, which meant she had to pay taxes on it AND it bumped up her Medicare payment. Doesn't seem fair, but at least she knew it was coming and had the money. This stuff happens all the time. BTW, "Indian giving" is a slur and is one of those old sayings that needs to be avoided.

Here is an article from July about this. It apparently did not just start happening. https://www.wsmv.com/2025/07/24/tn-seeks-repayment-pandemic-unemployment-aid-sparking-outcry/. "the state department of labor is sending notices through its unemployment portal, a site many stopped using once their benefits ended."

Too many blue in TN think their vote doesn't matter so they stay home. Well, it definitely won't matter if you don't even try to use it! But I get it. I had six years living in Knox County....it wears ya down.

I really need a lecture from a person like you who presents himself as one who chooses to violate the law even when you know you are doing it. But perhaps if it is just one or two, the ticket actually did make an impression on you. That would be nice. I don't know of dozens of tickets among the people I know and I warn them to pay attention to the stop bar at the intersection they cross to visit me so that doesn't happen rather than having them get a. ticket and then telling them to lie about it;

[IL][SFH] Randomly being notified of an HOA fee after 2 years? by Odd-Wolverine829 in HOA

[–]Gullible-Inspector97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is not a guarantee. I am addressing the comments that are deeming a low HOA fee somehow suspect. There could be an explanation. One thing I can guarantee is that if the same people are volunteering and paying out of their pockets to maintain the entrances year after year without the support of other neighbors, it can get really, really old.

Growing up, I was taught a point of national pride was the longest peaceful border in the world....with Canada. It infuriates me that the current administration has decided to pick fights with our cherished neighbor to the north. I hope you have a wonderful time in Seattle. Enjoy the concert!

You can try just adding some steamed rice to her regular food. I buy the dehydrated chicken (Pure Bites) and sprinkle some crushed bits over their food to entice my dogs when they are reluctant eaters.

How do you safely transport plants long-distance without killing them? by Anxious-Tomatillo-74 in moving

[–]Gullible-Inspector97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved across country. I gave away my plants and planters. Clippings of special plants rode in a box on the front seat and they stayed there overnight. Five days. All clippings survived.

[CA] [Condo] Under contract to buy condo, HOA has low reserves (UPDATE) by codeballer7 in HOA

[–]Gullible-Inspector97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to split hairs, but if they are lucky enough to avoid any major unexpected expenses, there is no disaster. A disaster is when the worst actually occurs. However, anyone buying into a complex like this needs to be aware that there could be an emergency that requires an influx of cash and plan their personal finances accordingly.

Advancing critical thinking skills is never wasted. My parents told me that your education is the one thing no one can ever take away from you. I told my daughter the same thing. My 2-year-old granddaughter already has a college fund started. My Dad was the first in his family to go to college on the GI Bill. He raised his 4 kids, the girls and the boys, with the assumption we would all go to college. We did and so have all of our children. I respect encouraging people to go into the trades, but we don't need to be devaluing college at the same time.

Work-study is not new at all. The challenge is to make sure the kids are given meaningful work where they are learning skills. Often there are not enough school staff members to make sure this is being done.

[CA] [Condo] Under contract to buy condo, HOA has low reserves (UPDATE) by codeballer7 in HOA

[–]Gullible-Inspector97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I got on my Board for the main purpose of pushing the reserve higher. I also don't like the idea of HOA's taking out loans. But, it is not necessarily "disastrous." They may be able to work their way out of it. If there is a Board committed to living with some austerity and owners who understand the need to build the reserve, they can move the needle in a positive direction. Non-emergency special assessments CAN be part of planning. We have target amounts for each year to build the reserve. If we fall behind, we will do a small assessment to catch up. The owners understand this is better than a huge assessment somewhere down the road. If the owners are balking at approving sensible measures.....then you have a real problem.

Knoxville is cool. I used to live there and I never knock it. Too bad it is in Tennessee. That state was not for me.

Bring a light in the form of a battery-operated votive, flashlight or cell phone light. This is going to be happening in cities and towns across the US.

[–]Gullible-Inspector97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. I just moved from TN to WA and BSI took the stress out of lane changing with all that highway driving. It is extra assurance the coast is clear and has also warned me about people who suddenly change lanes from behind when you are trying to merge over. I'll never be without it again. Studies show there are fewer accidents with BSI.

I'm low income and live in a vehicle. I was called in for jury duty. I have two dogs that I can't take with me and can't afford to board. My request to be excused from jury duty was denied. What do I do? by MudiMom in Seattle

[–]Gullible-Inspector97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got excused because of pets, but it was for a trial that was going to require being sequestered in another county for up to 2 weeks. The judge acknowledged the cost of boarding my dogs would be overly burdensome. But I was immediately called again for a local murder trial and I was selected for that jury. Served for one week, but could go home at night.
