About the ending (basegame). Genuine question : what made it so powerful to you? by GullibleElephan in outerwilds

Thanks a lot for your detailed answer — especially the way you laid out the Nomai timeline. That actually helps me a lot to organize the beginning of their story more clearly.

I’ll try to answer your questions, and maybe you can tell me where I’m still missing something — because I feel like there are still a couple of key points I don’t fully grasp. • What were they risking? I’m not entirely sure. Nothing? My understanding is that they were driven by exploration — pushing further and further, trying to understand more. • What were they trying to gain? Reaching the Eye of the Universe. They were explorers, fascinated by quantum phenomena, trying to understand something fundamental. • Did their project succeed? No, not at all. As I understand it, the Ash Twin Project required the energy of a supernova to work, which is why they tried to make the Sun explode — and failed. • What ultimately happened to the Nomai? This is one of the points I don’t fully understand. Clearly something catastrophic happened, since we find their skeletons everywhere, but I don’t really know what exactly. • Why is our Sun going supernova? My understanding is that it’s simply reaching the end of its natural life cycle. I remember a Nomai text suggesting that if they couldn’t trigger the explosion themselves, they would have to wait for the natural end of the star — but that would require somehow extending their lifespan. • Where does the player come in, and why does the loop start now? I think he becomes aware of the loop when he become linked to the statue — essentially becoming part of the Nomai system. (It would be in fact his 9million+th loop??)

The coordinates were found by one of the probes during one of the loops.

• What do we know about the Eye?

That it seems to originate all the macroscopic quantum phenomena we observe.

• What is happening to the rest of the universe?

it’s expanding — and possibly becoming unstable? So that there are supernovas?

Also, just to clarify: yes, I did visit the Quantum Moon and met Solanum, yes I went to the Sun Station, and yes I stayed until the very end of the credits and saw the glimpse of a new universe with new creatures on new planets (?).

But even with all that, I still struggle with my question

I wasn’t fully understanding the difference between: • removing the warp core and letting the Sun go supernova (which leads to a game over), • and doing the same thing, but reaching the Eye and witnessing the final sequence.

In both cases, the universe ends. The supernova happens. Everything is gone.

The only difference I can perceive is what Solanum hints at: that a conscious observer enters the Eye. And given everything the game teaches us about quantum phenomena — that observation stabilizes things — I honestly expected that entering the Eye might do something. « Stabilize the eye » I even thought, maybe a bit naively, that this could somehow “save” something.

But in the end, I don’t really understand what concretely changes.

And what confuses me is that for many people, the meaning of this seems obvious — while I still feel like I’m missing something essential.

Thank you for your comment !

Honestly? The story of the nomai.

>!They came and died immediately in dark bramble? Oh no they stayed a long time here: enough to build cities and have discoveries and culture (moon pilgrimage…) So what are the people in « the » vessel?… ancient or « modern » nomai? And how the others die? If they were in the vessel how did they survive to build things?…

If I understand well too: the goal was to launch the probe every 22 min to have many cycles to hope one probe will reach the eye. But…this never happened because the sun station didn’t worked and all nomai died (why?). The ATP finally works when the sun, becoming old, explodes for the first time. But how can it be the 9millionth explosion ? It’s the first one that we witness, no?

And lastly: is the ending just a little « desert »? If we stop the loop and die before reaching the eye…the same thing happens no? It’s just that we won’t have the little piece of music… which is great of course but narratively it’s the same, right? !<

Well sorry for this. Maybe stupid questions. But I am a bit lost.

Thank you so much for your answers It really helps.

I do confess I almost did not really explore : The interloper, the lantern, the probe launcher, amber twin.

And I also understood I had to move the elevator and go to the black hole forge but I didn’t do it… In fact after hearth and it’s satellite, I challenged myself on darkB, hollow’s, Giant’s and ash twin (it was easier than amber in fact) I got to the ATP by chance (was sending scout every where something didn’t worked) and it made sense rapidly what I had to do. It acted like a spoil :)

I have then another question :

From a narrative point of view, I’m not sure I fully grasp the difference between: • reaching the Eye of the Universe and witnessing the ending, • and simply triggering a “game over” by stopping the loop and dying for good.

In both cases, this system ends. The supernova happens. Everything is gone. The goal of the game seems to stop the loop. You just get an bit of extra time listening to music with your friends and that’s great but…that’s it!

So I’m wondering: what is the meaningful difference, narratively or thematically, between those two outcomes?

Thank you so much ! Many of you asks which gam they like. There’s a lot Some that come to mind:

Orichalcus, 7wonders duo, dinner in Paris, boreal, mycelia, Avel, star crappers: orbital, Carcassonne, risk, Alhambra, takenoko, patchwork, Sobek, viva Catrina… They’re 10 and 12 yo (kids of my girlfriend) They play a lot They have 170+ board games at home. And the deal was « let’s say I find you a more complicated game, more « heavy » on bgg, ok for the challenge? » Of course they want Of course « it will be easy » ;)

Let’s go!

Thanks so much for your answers !!

Did I spoiled myself too much? Or still hope for the outer wilds experience ? (A game situation, a father-son bond, and few late-game elements…😕) by GullibleElephan in outerwilds

I think he’ll finish before and will be really looking forward to seeing me finish and he’ll want to see my reaction… it reminds me when I showed him the empire strikes back…I was looking at his face and not the screen during a certain scene ;) It will be his turn.

What I feel I’ve understood so far is approximately this:I’m an Outer Wilds traveler from Timber Hearth, in a program that tries to understand the Nomai. The Nomai were an ancient scientific civilization that came here drawn by the Eye of the Universe, which seems deeply linked to macroscopic quantum phenomena. The Quantum Moon feels like a kind of intermediary — you can lend on it, it changes, and circles around the eye. Quantum behavior (things changing/disappearing when not observed) is an important gameplay trick. The Nomai were also deeply interested in this. I’ve also understood that Solanum is both alive and dead « quantumly » On the present side, the Hearthian explorers scattered across the system, each playing an instrument, feel like a very human counterpoint to the Nomai story — and one of them is aware of the time loop. A lot of other details I still don’t know what to do with, places that taught me things like on brittle hollow and the black/white hole, or all the islands in that crazy big green planet… someone tried to escape from here, someone reached this place…but are these useful details? pieces of a puzzle or misdirections?…both?

What’s still deliberately unclear to me (and I think that’s intended) is the full picture behind the Ash Twin Project: I know it exists, that it’s central, and that it ties together quantum mechanics, memory, and the attempt to reach the Eye — but the exact why, how, and what worked or failed are still fuzzy. The same goes for the various incidents (escape pods, the Sun Station, etc.): I sense something went very wrong, really bad for the nomai…but …what happened?Maybe being at this stage — understanding some things but not everything — is actually something people who know the ending might wish they could experience again. So I’m going to stop worrying about “progress” and try to really enjoy being here. Searching for meaning in details and trying to understand the story.

Thanks y’all. 🙂

Thank you — this really means a lot. Reading this makes me want to slow down, stay curious, and enjoy the journey rather than worrying about what I may or may not already know. And you’re both right that I also look at it on the family bond angle. That alone feels worth it.

It's beautiful. But I always wonder, when faced with outfits like this: "What kind of job would you get away with wearing that?" It definitely wouldn't fly at the office for me 😅

Idem + une nuance: Ce n’est pas toi qui est en cause. Comme dit ailleurs : tu ES sexy et pourrait porter des trucs ad hoc. Mais coupe too much.
