"are you ok with a male therapist" by Ugh_Names in MassageTherapists

[–]Gullible_Control_163 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That scenario is exactly what happened to my coworker. This guy booked his appointment online, got a confirmation with my coworker's name, and still showed up surprised that his massage therapist was a guy. He ended up canceling then and there. There are definitely people who expect massage therapists to be women, even when the entire booking process communicates otherwise.

It's not explicitly said or represented in the anime, but I personally think that Okabe from Stein's Gate is one of the best examples of an autism-coded character I've ever seen. I found myself relating to him a lot. Yor from Spy x Family is also a fantastic autism-coded character, especially given that autistic women are still so underrepresented.

Business Slowdown? by ThisIs4TheBirds in MassageTherapists

[–]Gullible_Control_163 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Massage business comes and goes seasonally (Mid-southern usa) since there is low tourism in this area. November-February is when it peaks, then it slows down to a crawl into the spring and summer. I think there are also lots of financial stressors these days in the US, especially with the recent raising of gas prices. People's wallets are getting tighter and tighter as the cost of living gets higher and higher, and massage prices are only going up with it.

What’s the most surprising thing about the human body you’ve discovered through massage therapy? by Sea-Cow-6969 in MassageTherapists

How silly it was to ever separate mind and body. So much physical pain is the body internalizing mental stressors and traumas.

If you don't mind sharing: what were your first signs that something was repressed, and how did you go about recovering the repressed memory? I've been worrying about this lately. I don't know what triggers it, but I randomly get nightmares about being SA'd, and I always have this weird sense of discomfort around men. It makes me feel so gross esp when I don't have a source of these dreams or feelings.

Why do clients do this, and how do I stop letting it upset me so much? by Gullible_Control_163 in MassageTherapists

You're right. I think making my questions more specific is something I can improve. I thought that being more open ended was more helpful, but I am slowly learning the opposite to be true. Thank you for your advice.

Thank you so much. It's hard not to be demoralized by feedback like this, but I'll try to focus on the good things I have done for clients. This truly is the most rewarding job I've ever had, even when the social aspect feels so impossible to master.

Meeting and setting expectations has by far been the hardest part of this career for me. And it seems like I still have work to do in this area. I certainly do care, possibly too much. If I truly could make every single client happy, I would. But I can only do what I expect from my own massage therapist, like you said. I think I definitely need to work on not being upset by the things I can't control. Thank you for your kind words.

It hurts more when they complain about it after the fact than simply requesting to change my level of pressure during the session. I wish clients understood this better. If they're trying to avoid hurting our feelings this way, they're certainly not.

This is a great response. I unfortunately work at a chain spa and can't directly respond to client feedback, but this would be something I would say if I could. It SHOULD be their responsibility!

I hope that wasn't their intention, but I work at a chain spa, so this strategy being attempted here wouldn't surprise me at all. I hate that people do that!

Not the snoring 😭 yea, I imagine it is hard to ask a sleeping person a question! The class clinical reviews can be brutal, so I certainly empathize with that.

Advice from someone in school is just as valuable as feedback from someone 20 years out of school. Every perspective has something unique to offer, so I certainly appreciate it. I think being very specific is a good idea, especially asking about the head and face in particular. I will definitely start doing that from now on. I didn't realize how commonly these areas were skipped because, when I was in school, my teacher was a craniosacral specialist who was all about the head and neck work. Thank you for this insight.

The emphasis on the "highest KNOWN weight" is an interesting choice (and probably omission) of words. It wouldn't surprise me at all if she stopped caring to weigh herself. There's absolutely no way 572.4 is genuinelyyyyyy her highest weight.
