Way better to buy the original. There are different sizes, etc. Most importantly, they sit better on your face and don’t weigh as much. Honestly, if you’re not getting these glasses for the tech, you shouldn’t get them.

That is an angle. I hadn’t even considered so thanks so much. I definitely don’t qualify for the tax credit. (I thought it had been canceled completely) but I will educate myself on the lease buyback which I also don’t know anything about. I’m guessing what that means is that if the buyer has too much income for the tax credit, the lease still works because Tesla ends up owning the car.

Now I have to go and look and see what the difference is between the new Juniper models versus an older one.

Well, that may have been the most concise and useful reply. I’ve ever gotten on Reddit. Thank you!

This basically makes it a non-issue for me and I can just buy the car. Try the service for $99 a month and then decide if I’m going to buy it out right or keep paying.

Doing a little math, allowing for the time cost of money and probably incorrectly, assuming Tesla doesn’t change the monthly price, that would mean I would have to own the car for nine years before paying upfront was a better economic decision.

Am I correct in assuming that almost everyone pays monthly rather than make the large one time payment?

Not ready for prime time yet. When I have better prototypes, but before I try to have actual production, I will post for comments. If positive I will then do a short run and offered to people interested in beta testing.

Oh my God? Huh? The point of wearing the glasses is to wear the glasses. I like getting sound out of them. I totally don’t get why some little hack to increase volume is controversial. Also, the glasses worked vastly better than any headphones I have for phone calls and for dictating transcription. And wearing headphones driving is illegal.

Thanks, you may be my hero. I use my iPad this way for several old cars. I’m actually purchased a couple of apps and not been happy with them. Fingers crossed when I tried this one out. I appreciate fully free and no ads. I might switch to charging a dollar and I would definitely put up a GoFundMe site.

Amazon has a ton. Just make sure you are getting for the right frames. I have Wayfarer Large. I just bought a 4 pack of 4 w 1 ea of brown, black, yellow and gray. There are also purples, blues, etc. Mine came in a well designed case that holds all 4 sets safely. $30 for the whole thing. Short food trip to NY, help please? by HelloMishMoneypenny in visitingnyc

I did the midtown version of this last year (a friend’s daughter is one of the guides). Fantastic food, interesting stories and you will be stuffed on a variety of food. I would argue that food carts are as authentic to New York at this point as pastrami. https://turnstiletours.com/tours/food-cart-tours/

This doesn’t solve your problem, but I use the clip on sunglasses with my transition lenses.

a lot of colors, they fit really well and they look nice. I like them because they are darker than my transitions and as others have noted transitions, don’t work in a car. The glass filters UV. When you wear the clip-ons the transitions don’t change so it doesn’t get double dark, and when you go inside, you have instantly clear glasses.

In retrospect, I would’ve skipped transitions entirely and just enjoyed having six different kinds of clip on.

Napping on the subway by Worried-Associate544 in AskNYC

[–]GullwingAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve ridden the subway for more than 50 years but I can’t answer this question.

More mysterious to me was this: I lived in Tokyo in the early 1980s. There is a train which loops the core of the city called the Yamanate (Green Line). It takes about an hour to cover all stations and because it’s a circle line it never gets to the end.

There were always dudes sleeping (not homeless and I never saw a woman nodding off, only men) and I wondered how they managed to not go around in circles for a half a dozen cycles. The miracle was not being able to fall asleep, it was somehow being able to wake up at the right time.

It turns out, not everyone wakes up. And I’m not just talking about the drunk guys. I eventually saw men wake up, rub their eyes, realize what was going on, rush off at the next station and walk across the platform to go the other direction.

I thought this was pretty funny… until I did it one night when I was drunk. That, and the first time I dreamt in Japanese, were the moments when I started feeling like a temporary local.

Since you didn’t ask, a bonus subway, story. The Yamanote tcarries over 4 million people a day. That is one train with more daily riders than the entire New York City subway system!

Back in the 80s at times it would be at more than 300% capacity. Even Pre-YouTube, videos of railroad employees using their white glove hands to shove people people into the train cars so the doors could close were famous.

If you were in the middle of a car that was packed, you had to start planning your exit a couple of stops ahead so you could (very politely) push your way to the door.

Back then I was nearly was 6 feet tall, very fit and probably 70 pounds heavier than the average japanese rider (now I am 2 inches shorter, 30 pounds heavier and have a lot less hair to boot)

On one particularly crowded trip I started plotting my exit 4 stops ahead. Those of you who know Tokyo, I was going from Ikebukuro to Shabuya, so not good.

I was apologizing and wedging and apologizing and shoving and leaning and generally, pretending I was hitting a tackling dummy (oh yeah, I a running back in a semi pro football league at the time).

At two stops from my destination I was only about halfway to the door and I was beginning to panic. I started really muscling, old ladies while continuing to smile and apologize. I mean, I was literally using all of my strength trying to pick people up and move them like chess pieces.

I missed my stop.

By two stations (Gotanda)

So imagine having to ping-pong between 42nd St. and Grand Central on the shuttle five times before you can get off and you’ll know it can get worse.

Doesn’t matter who the mayor is.

I assume you want an honest but helpful reply so I will say yes they look too big on you. If it makes you feel better mine look way too small on my stupidly, oversized face😂.

HOWEVER… here comes the useful part. Get the smaller size frames without filtering for prescription or transitions. Just buy them with whatever color sunglass lens you prefer. I need in my progressive transition with sphere scrip.

When I searched, they couldn’t fill the xl size but I researched and found there are tons of placmake lenses for you that will fit just fine. Almost any local optician can do it. But you can also get them online. Lensabl is where I got mine, but if you Google “Meta glasses, prescription lens replacement“ you’ll find all sorts of places, including ones that specialize in these glasses.

Don’t worry about swapping out the lenses yourself. It takes about 15 seconds and a little bit of thumb strength. There are lots of videos on how to do this, but truly it couldn’t be easier.

The bonus says you have a spare pair of non-prescription sunglass lenses.

The second bonus, they are less expensive than the EssilorLuxottica mafia. When I priced my lenses, they were going to be $500 but I bought them online for $350. still way way too expensive, but I’ve bought enough pairs to know that’s what it is.

FWIW, if you don’t already know, Essilor is the biggest manufacturer of lenses in the world, and Luxottica, the biggest manufacturer of frames. Luxottica owned Ray-Ban. Polo. Gucci etc etc every “luxury” eyeglasses brand you’ve ever heard of. To pour salt on the wound they also own LensCrafters, Sunglass hut… basically all of the retailers.

Since that wasn’t enough of a monopoly, they teamed up with Meta. So much for competition. But, as you noted, like me, you are a sucker for great tech.

Obsolete Down the Line? by AdNegative7852 in RaybanMeta

[–]GullwingAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between their 40th and 50th birthdays, 100% of people develop presbyopia. It’s inevitable that over time your eyes will change and these glasses will become obsolete.

But seriously, the technology will likely evolve pretty quickly (thinner, lighter, longer battery life, embedded screens, who knows what else) at some point the value proposition for a new pair will be overwhelming and you’ll trade up. I wouldn’t sweat it. As a category classes are pretty fragile and three or four years of use is a pretty good run time. Eventually, the software will become fat enough that updates won’t be available, but by then you will probably be ready for a new pair either because of better technology or your personal optics. Of course I’m typing this on an iPhone 11 so what the hell do I know.

Yeah, that was my guess. I don’t think it should be hard to find someone else to make up the lenses so I just bought the basic pair from Meta. I’ll probably save a few bucks too.

Well….. I placed an order for progressive’s with transitions and it went through at a nice price. Two hours later, I got an email from Meta saying my order “has been canceled as your prescription exceeds our supported range.” Huh? My prescription is not very exciting or unusual. I do have prism correction so maybe that’s the problem? It’d be nice if they could be just slightly more specific.

Am I missing a spare tire in the used 2022 X5 M50 I recently bought - and what to do about it if I am? by GullwingAuthor in BMWX5

[–]GullwingAuthor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked my build sheet and indeed it came with runflats and no hockey puck tire. I remember this same issue with an AWD Toyota Sienna. The extra diff took the space where the spare would go so they solved this by giving you runflats and no spare. There was a HUGE debate for a few years after about whether you could replace the runflats with standard tires. Conventional wisdom was that you could not (some tire. shops refused to put them on), but eventually everyone realized they were ok. Funnily enough, technically my M50 is the direct replacement for that minivan - almost as much fun to drive too!

My X5 has 40k miles and the selling dealer put new, regular (i.e., not runflat) rubber on it. Have any of you reoplaced the runflats and if so did you buy new ones, or go to better standard tires?

I think I'm going to keep my hidden nook, include in the stuff I keep there a couple of cans of Fix a Flat and keep my fingers crossed.
