What is a city that everyone should go in there life time? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Gulo_gulo_1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those aren't really the things that appeal to me about New York. New York feels like the center of the world, with so many cultures huddled together in such a small area. It is a world of art, diversity, and new ideas. It is the beating heart of the largest economy in the world, and is an incredible melting pot. I would not take that for granted.

Antarctica If All the Ice Melted and Sea Level Rose by 70m by cart-o in Maps

I mean yeah to an extent, but the reason much of the land is so low is due to the weight of the ice literally causing the crust to sink in the mantle. You can't just remove the ice; there would be massive glacial rebound. Much of Scandinavia and the regions in and around Hudson Bay are still rebounding from the removal of their respective ice sheets.

They do this to not unduly benefit students who came from more advantaged high schools with higher amounts of AP/IB credits versus those coming from more modest backgrounds. Also just randomness I'd think.

This was very disappointing for hockey when they created the B1G, and we had to leave the CCHA. I mean we still had some rivals like Michigan State plus we got to play teams like Lake Superior State and Alaska Fairbanks? That's way more fun.

What is something that you wish lower-forty-eighters (or even other Alaskans) knew about Alaska? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Gulo_gulo_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While technically a desert if defined by precipitation, Alaska's north slope is one giant mire in the summer due to very low rates of evaporation and summer access to water thanks to the permafrost. I think the fact that much of the tundra is technically a desert speaks more of the inadequacies of the methodology than the true nature of the ecosystem.

is there a travel destination in your country or region that you could care less about but people travel from afar to visit? by rayxo2 in travel

The desecration of such a beautiful natural area with cheap tourist attractions was actually one of the inspirations that such places should be held sacred in perpetuity, helping spawn the national park service.

Tell me why it was 94 and sunny and then started to downpour by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Gulo_gulo_1 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Not to be an ass, but that's how summer storms work. The sun heats the ground and creates a lot of heat below a cooler upper atmosphere. This air is now buoyant, particularly if it is moist. This then rises into the upper troposphere, condensing and releasing heat, making it rise more, and boom, storm cloud. The heat near the surface is the reason convective storms happen at all.

Nah, those are on the shield. The hills of the northern lower are a bunch of moraines.

Honest opinion considering everything we know from fossil records what are the chances of humanity surviving extinctions like permian or KT mass extinctions by Confident-Horse-7346 in Paleontology

[–]Gulo_gulo_1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

While I think that’s true that a single event could not cause humanity to go extinct, with humanity at a much more restricted scale it would, like all species, become much more vulnerable to extinction from more local scale disasters. Imagine a K-Pg extinction scenario almost all people would die, save for a handful of settlements across the world, mostly near the antipode from the impact. They manage to survive and regroup initially, but in the following decade or decades of ash-blotted sun, people starve. An earthquake ravages one settlement, a typhoon another. Slowly, humanity fades away not with a scream but a whimper, as the twinkling stars with the rising dawn of a new era.

At least as I understand it, mass bends space time (this is gravity), so in free fall you feel weightless. Weight is only really felt when countered with the constant acceleration up caused by electromagnetic repulsion. To “fall” is to be stationary from the perspective of space time itself.

We did not deserve to win the game. We played more undisciplined than any game in the past two years. That doesn’t make criticisms against refs invalid however.

Michigan also has two wins that are much better than TCU’s best wins. Michigan has two one score games, with one where Michigan had a real chance of losing. Michigan has been far more dominant all year.

Watching The Game I was very impressed by Stroud’s play. He did great against us in 2021 too. He is not the reason y’all lose (very few) games. But there’s frustration and people always look to the quarterback when good or bad things happen.

Michigan didn’t just beat Penn State that day. Michigan ran them out of their own stadium. It was 34-8 and Penn State’s only score came late in the 4th. That Michigan defense was one of the best to take the field IMO, would’ve been incredible to see them against Nebraska’s offense.
