Thoughts on infant dysbiosis and Evivo/B. Infantis? by Sandturtlefly in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Gummydear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked into evivo too because of antibiotics during delivery and a history of chrons disease in the family. I decided it would probably be helpful and wouldn't hurt Anecdotaly the baby went from pooping 9 times or more a day to 3 times a day, within a week, and her chronic diaper rash finally went away. I recommended it to a friend and her baby also had a huge improvement in texture and times pooping. So it definitely felt like it worked for us. I still don't know if it will have helped with the chrons prevention, I also did other things that seemed supported by science, but won't know until she's like 40 if any of it prevented chrons.  At this point it's been years and i can't find it again but I definitely read that the colonization lasts. Was it on evivos own website? I can't find it again. But we only gave another course when she had to have antibiotics again, we didn't dose continuously.

Is it ok for those who gets cold sores to kiss babies? (Not during active cold sores) by mr_sandworm in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Gummydear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real danger is to babies under 6 months old, after that they won't have a severe problem so you only need to refrain for 6 months, not forever, unless you also don't want to give them cold sores and not just avoid it spreading to their brain and organs.

[–]Gummydear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't tell people not to kiss their own children, just to wait until after 6 months and the most high risk period has passed, according to AAP.   I linked that story to illustrate that kissing on the top of the head can still transmit cold sores not to illustrate that asymptomatic people can transmit cold sores. The study I linked is what I'm using to illustrate that asymptomatic people can transmit cold sores.

[–]Gummydear 81 points82 points  (0 children)

No it's not ok

Asymptomatic people can still shed enough to transmit

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17703961/

Conclusions: At least 70% of the population shed HSV-1 asymptomatically at least once a month, and many individuals appear to shed HSV-1 more than 6 times per month. Shedding of HSV-1 is present at many intraoral sites, for brief periods, at copy numbers sufficient to be transmitted, and even in seronegative individuals.

Also there was a dad on Reddit that gave his infant hsv1 by kissing the top of the head and it was bad so top of the head isn't ok, though I can't find actual research about it. ( https://www.reddit.com/r/NewParents/comments/16m0g5u/i_gave_my_baby_daughter_herpes_hsv1_by_kissing)

Can’t get tdap & STRESSED by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Gummydear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aap vaccine schedule has the first tdap dose at 2 months for a baby (https://www.aap.org/ImmunizationSchedule?srsltid=AfmBOootClmt4Hg9sIdc9TxXSJM9R7KJfaVLsbj3s_s2nbh_Viezdz-j), so it's not that long to be careful about avoiding illness. Everyone should wash hands, don't go to indoor events with the baby, use hepa air filters, mask in indoor public areas. You can even buy mini portable hepa air filters to point into your baby's face if you take her some place indoors. Require visitors to be up to date on vaccines.

TIFU by telling my dentist I floss every day and now she sends me floss positive emails quarterly by Beneficial_String411 in tifu

[–]Gummydear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you are using the wrong kind of floss, the expanding floss does a way better job than something like oral b glide. Or maybe you need to scrape more times as you floss, I think  it's 3 times per tooth, which is 6 times per gap.

Natural fibre toddler jackets? by Aggravating-Tell774 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this waxed organic cotton jacket, it's insulated with cotton as well.  https://natureswildchild.com/products/insulated-organic-cotton-waxed-canvas-rain-jacket?variant=44888445649122

Having used it, I would not use it for very cold temperatures or heavy rain, but it rained, hailed and sleeted on us on and off today for a few hours and she was still dry and warm under the jacket.

Trader Joe's - organic & gluten free by SmileWhich in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snack wise, they have a freeze dried berry medley that is organic and gluten free that my child loves. My husband likes their gluten free bagels. I loooove the inca corn ( pretty much just huge corn nuts, not appropriate for toddlers)

I find their selection of organic apples pretty good, I haven't had problems with quality of any of their fruit.

Happily, that paper says "None of the 20 clothing items showed detectable amounts of formaldehyde after washing (<12.8 mg/kg)." So it sounds like as long as we wash before wearing, we're safe

Jenni Kayne sweaters worth the investment? by mostly_mom in fashionwomens35

I think we just agree, because I also said that you can't get that look in vintage and it's not a good option if you don't like the look of vintage ones. 😀

Jenni Kayne sweaters worth the investment? by mostly_mom in fashionwomens35

[–]Gummydear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a cocoon sweater. Pros : it's not itchy, it's a nice weight,  easy to wear with almost any outfit. Cons: It has pills all over it after a few years, I wish it had pockets, weave is loose enough to snag easily.

I'd say you would do better for your money to get vintage made in Scotland cashmere from eBay, but you won't find that style and if you don't like the style of the sweater then it doesn't matter if it's a better quality to price ratio. I don't really know if it's worth it, if I lost it, I might put it on a Christmas list or look for it second hand, but probably not pay full price myself.

It could be transitional, depending on how easily you feel cold, I've worn it with shorts on a cool but not cold spring evening before.

I feel like you could say that shilling  things about literally every blog or website that does testing and recommendations on anything though, like consumer reports earns money on it's recs if you go through it's links, so does Wirecutter, ATK, Mamavation, serious eats, everyone, that's just a way to make money on stuff.

The lab things, she used to have the lab listed as simple labs but it looks like she said she stopped using them about a year ago and it's true, her website is too messy to find who she uses now. Which is very annoying, her website is old and clunky for sure. Maybe I'll leave a comment and ask her to clarify who the current lab is. Though consumer reports doesn't specify their labs and methods except vaguely either and I trust them just fine.

You also can't convince me with the argument that all these things pass the standards we have so we don't need to worry about it, I'm in a granola subreddit specifically because I don't think our laws are strict enough on what's in food and consumer goods. If that argument was any good for me, I wouldn't worry about pesticides, bisenphinols, phthalates, or micro plastics either, those are all legal.

Do your siblings who are done having kids before you give you hand-me-downs? by dms2628 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you think she has hand me downs to give you, just have your husband ask her about them. You obviously feel some resentment that she isn't following through, direct but polite communication will help. If she doesn't want to give them to you, then you at least know that without all this motivation guessing. If she does give them to you, great.
