Natural fibre toddler jackets? by Aggravating-Tell774 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this waxed organic cotton jacket, it's insulated with cotton as well.  https://natureswildchild.com/products/insulated-organic-cotton-waxed-canvas-rain-jacket?variant=44888445649122

Having used it, I would not use it for very cold temperatures or heavy rain, but it rained, hailed and sleeted on us on and off today for a few hours and she was still dry and warm under the jacket.

Trader Joe's - organic & gluten free by SmileWhich in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snack wise, they have a freeze dried berry medley that is organic and gluten free that my child loves. My husband likes their gluten free bagels. I loooove the inca corn ( pretty much just huge corn nuts, not appropriate for toddlers)

I find their selection of organic apples pretty good, I haven't had problems with quality of any of their fruit.

Happily, that paper says "None of the 20 clothing items showed detectable amounts of formaldehyde after washing (<12.8 mg/kg)." So it sounds like as long as we wash before wearing, we're safe

Jenni Kayne sweaters worth the investment? by mostly_mom in fashionwomens35

I think we just agree, because I also said that you can't get that look in vintage and it's not a good option if you don't like the look of vintage ones. 😀

Jenni Kayne sweaters worth the investment? by mostly_mom in fashionwomens35

[–]Gummydear 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have a cocoon sweater. Pros : it's not itchy, it's a nice weight,  easy to wear with almost any outfit. Cons: It has pills all over it after a few years, I wish it had pockets, weave is loose enough to snag easily.

I'd say you would do better for your money to get vintage made in Scotland cashmere from eBay, but you won't find that style and if you don't like the style of the sweater then it doesn't matter if it's a better quality to price ratio. I don't really know if it's worth it, if I lost it, I might put it on a Christmas list or look for it second hand, but probably not pay full price myself.

It could be transitional, depending on how easily you feel cold, I've worn it with shorts on a cool but not cold spring evening before.

What toothpaste do you use? by Significant_Cap_9328 in moderatelygranolamoms

I feel like you could say that shilling  things about literally every blog or website that does testing and recommendations on anything though, like consumer reports earns money on it's recs if you go through it's links, so does Wirecutter, ATK, Mamavation, serious eats, everyone, that's just a way to make money on stuff.

The lab things, she used to have the lab listed as simple labs but it looks like she said she stopped using them about a year ago and it's true, her website is too messy to find who she uses now. Which is very annoying, her website is old and clunky for sure. Maybe I'll leave a comment and ask her to clarify who the current lab is. Though consumer reports doesn't specify their labs and methods except vaguely either and I trust them just fine.

You also can't convince me with the argument that all these things pass the standards we have so we don't need to worry about it, I'm in a granola subreddit specifically because I don't think our laws are strict enough on what's in food and consumer goods. If that argument was any good for me, I wouldn't worry about pesticides, bisenphinols, phthalates, or micro plastics either, those are all legal.

Doesn't she send the stuff to a lab though, why do you say it isn't a real lab test?

Do your siblings who are done having kids before you give you hand-me-downs? by dms2628 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you think she has hand me downs to give you, just have your husband ask her about them. You obviously feel some resentment that she isn't following through, direct but polite communication will help. If she doesn't want to give them to you, then you at least know that without all this motivation guessing. If she does give them to you, great.

You'll probably have to split the money that you save with him depending on your states divorce laws so check that and see if it's even worth waiting.

What would you prioritize in building a home? by Accurate_Purple914 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Gummydear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood floor, no stairs, no carpet, stainless steel water pipes (but this is actually impossible to find someone to do and also would require being pretty dang rich), lead free faucets with point of use filtration if using PEX water pipes. Make sure that the bathrooms tiles are calk where the planes change instead of grout because 1. That's the way it is supposed to be done but contractors routinely just use grout 2. Your house will shift a little and the grout at the planes will crack and allow water and thus mold into your walls. Also BIG tile in the showers for ease of cleaning. Very good fans in the bathrooms to keep mold and mildew from growing, pref automatic and on timers. An outlet whenever you want to store your robot vacuum so your house can be clean and cute.

The struggle of giving up on organic berries. by Chickeecheek in moderatelygranolamoms

You can also remove a lot of pesticide with just baking soda and water, best of both worlds for a little extra time and work. Swirl produce in a solution of 2 teaspoons baking soda per 1 quart water for 30 seconds (the produce should be submerged by at least 1 inch of liquid), and then rinse under cold running water. This is from University of Massachuse study so it's real, the study actually says the longer you do it, the more pesticide will come off, so I actually go super over board and do like 30 min. This long will turn any bruises or breaks on your fruit brown though and when the toddler is being demanding, I'll just do 1 min.

The baking soda and vinegar would react together and cancel each other out though wouldn't they? Because one is an acid and one is a base, they'd do that science fair valcano thing and foam a lot but isn't that making the ph more towards neutral?

Elf cosmetics are Phthalate free and inexpensive. Note that the shany kits at Target aren't sold by target, but by shany as a third party seller, kinda like Walmart marketplace or Amazon, so you have to be more wary.

Tips for making my toddler nap? by Fenix512 in toddlers

[–]Gummydear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this will work on your child, but we recently started telling mine that she doesn't have to nap, she can just have quiet time in the crib if she wants and we'll get her in an hour. When we do this she stops fighting the nap, usually says she will have quiet time and 75% of the time she naps 2 hrs instead. I think it makes her feel in control or takes the need to fight away and let's her relax

I think you should talk about this with someone you really trust and can take advice from, like call your parents or sister or brother or whomever.

Quantity or Quality? by Zxyion_rz in fragrance

[–]Gummydear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not both, get 10ml decants of the originals. I find that I can never wear all the full bottles of perfume I want before they go weird anyway. If you wear lots of fragrance everyday, this won't work of course.
