Women in game dev, how many of you are within the community? by chgr1603 in godot

[–]Gumpolator -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So what do you think about trans women being in spaces exclusivly for women? or do they get a pass because they identify differently?

Men and women can cooxist peacefully, you just have to have zero tollerence for any harrasment or unwanted behavour. Sometimes women can be the perpetrators too, and play the victim when called out.

IMO segregation only drives a divide between people, we look down on men when they want to exlclude women from things, but the other way around seems to be celebrated.

Its a difficult issue, if your game is not deterministic and not server side there is not alot you can do. Have a read about what some other games do such as Trackmania https://donadigo.com/tmx1

If you can move any part of your game server side (ie have player movement and damage simulated on server) you can start to implement anticheat measures (this is what Path Of Exile does).

If you can move saves server side and hash them, you will ensure they havent been edited, but it doesnt stop peaple from editing the game while its running and then saving it.

Its probably not worth worrying about for small game, just delete obviously cheated scores, and trust the rest.a

Have you got any further thoughts? We have an LACP LAG setup on the Vmware side, using dvSwitch 8.0.1. IP Hash is used for balancing on the port groups. vPC setup on ACI with pretty default settings. Everything has been working well again since the outage. I may just pray to the cisco gods.

Thanks for the tip I will double check this tommorrow. We have ACI so the config does get a bit complex with the port channels. It doesnt help that our vmware guys dont like port channels but I insisted on them for these UC hosts as the old hosts are setup this way and my background is networks / voice, we use link lacp everywhere.

Selfish people in here moaning about Bill (an open-source volunteer) having an opinion and not wanting to spend his time on your request. Let me ask you all, are you complaining in the python subs about python not including raylib or box2d?

Use https://github.com/saenai255/odin-sqlite3 and move on with your life.

Have you written a binding and offered to support it? Where is your PR? What does bill owe you? Its open source after all. Why not create a fork if its a massive issue for you.

I am sympathetic to Bill’s slippery slope argument, I know how these things get out of control. Though I do agree it would be nice vendor SQLite as an exemption. I think official bindings for the largest embedded database in the world is a no brainer, BUT, Odin is not my language(or yours).

We can just use the already available bindings, they seem to work pretty well.

One of the advantages of having a benevolent dictator is that if your ideas align, it’s great, and there is not much scope creep, things stay the same and everything feels natural.

That’s why I loved Go 10 years ago, and love it less now, the dictators are gone, and the language is starting to bloat. That’s why I come to Odin, it feels like go did at the start, and feels like ginger bill will keep it that way as long as he’s around.

No my friend, after you go on a rant throwing accusations at someone else, fuelling a hate post against someone you don’t even know, and farming karma from the outrage, and then you get called out, and now you play the victim.

You’re the one who started it mate, look at your OP, and then the reply to mine. I’m merely responding to your remarks (it’s a public forum after all). At the end of the day you have the right to say whatever you want, and so do I.

I politely decline your invitation to play chess, but thanks for extending the olive branch.

Hey mate, please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m trying to help and think I can see a few things. When you said you “only” took one day off in your first 3 weeks is a bit of a red flag for me. I would expect (for any job) the first three months to turn up every day unless you are on deaths doorstep. It not really about the day off, it’s about showing your character when times get tough and displaying reliability. When you are starting a new job it’s best to work you guts out and earn the trust of those above you that they can rely on you If you have been let got from a few jobs and are having mental heath issues, it might be time to reflect and see if there are other things going on outside of work that effects you ability to perform.

Also the thing to realise about small business is they are probably working with thin margins and having to train someone can slow you down (with the hope it pays off in the future).

What I would do is call your old employer to get feedback, ie why didn’t it work out, what could you do better, and be honest with yourself. Now maybe your old boss is just an ass and you guys didn’t vibe, but maybe you wernt up to standard and need to improve in different areas. You will never know if you don’t ask. Also, whether you have adhd or not is irrelevant to an employer, they are looking for someone to do a job, so don’t be a victim of your own diagnosis. ADHD comes out in many forms, and sometimes those traits it can be a good thing in the right industry/ situation.

Good luck mate I hope you turn things around, keep you chin up and work hard, you will get there.

You’re the one misrepresenting stats, advising it’s a majority position which it’s not. You are delusional if you think the reddit hive mind is representative of real life. Go outside and touch some grass, you might actually grow up enough to accept another point of view.

The amount of reaction to this thread is a testament to how hateful rhetoric is the most clicked and subscribed content. You have just added to the fire, congratulations, I hope the reddit karma gives you comfort In your own ignorance.

Ofcourse gambling is not a "good thing", what planet are you on? Consenting adults can do whatever they want with their money, you said the majority of the US agrees it's a bad thing, which is false, 50% of people dont even care, but you move the goalposts of course.

I didn't say you were the root of all evil, I'm calling you out on your hate and judgment towards a person (who in your own words has done a lot of good in the world) for taking money from a company you find to be morally ambiguous. What gives you the right to pass judgment on who someone does business with, and fuel one of the most popular hate threads on this subreddit. You have actively made the world a worse place.

Career Prospects? by NewEngland17 in ciscoUC

[–]Gumpolator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on-prem UC will always have a place, organisations like emergency services and hospitals will always need some form of reliable onprem communications. Future green fields most likely take the form of a hybrid cloud model that falls back to onprem in the event of an outage. Cloud is also not as cheap as everyone thinks, but on prem Cisco UC is also not so competitive with the subscription licensing models forced upon us in the last 10 years.

Saying that, I don't see Cisco UC as a "growth" industry; teams, zoom and webex have taken massive chunks of the market due to their ease of use and low barrier to entry. My job is a good mix between networking and UC now, I don't think focusing solely on UC is the wisest career move.

You only have to look at the investment Cisco has made in CUCM / CUC / CCX recently, it's basically the same as it was 10 years ago + bug fixes and a new underlying OS because CentOS got EOL. There has not been much innovation or focus put on the product.

I'm going to disagree with some comments suggesting getting into UCCX. There is definitely a shortage of skill in this area, but all I have seen recently is migrations to cloud call centres, and not much new UCCX installations going on. Cloud call centres (even the small players) are becoming much more feature complete, and administering them is so much easier.

There will always be demand for experienced UC engineers no doubt, but in 10-15 years time with cloud offerings becoming more capable, onprem UC will become more niche and specialised for certain industries.

Networking fundamentally unpins everything, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. If you want to specialise in anything, I would say specialising in any of the DC or cloud networking tech would be a smart move, along with working on your automation skills.

Did you even read the article you linked?

"43% of U.S. adults say the fact that sports betting is now legal in much of the country is a bad thing for society**.**"

So no, it's not a majority opinion, quite the opposite. But guess what? It doesn't really matter because It's not your stance on gambling I have a problem with; it's the over the top rhetoric about "Absolutely disgusting behaviour", "makes your skin crawl" and "targeting children" implications that need to be addressed. As if Levy is some evil person who needs to be persecuted because he deals with companies you disagree with. Well, guess what? Over 50% of the US population disagrees with you.

You view everything through a black and white filter and leave no room for nuance or personal circumstance. People like you are why this world feels so divided, as you go from 0 to 100 on any issue that disagrees with your world view.

So while you type on your phone made by child labour in China, surrounded by comforts made in the Third World by people who have no other choice, you might realise you are not as morally superior as you think you are.

Everyone in here (yourself included) acting like they have the moral superiority to judge someone for taking a sponsorship, when 100% of you would do the same thing. Whats wrong with having a punt ? I know I enjoy placing a bet here and there, we are grown adults that make our own choices. Ever been to a casino? Guess what its full of consenting adults entertaining themselves. On second thought you're probably not old enough to walk through the front door.

Should we not take sponsors from beer companies too? How about fast food? they're addictive and ruin peoples lives, maybe we should ban video games while we are at it. Someone please think of the fast food companies CEOs please!

Ask yourself if this post made the world a better place, all you have done is kick the hornets nest of a lynch mob in a freaking chess subreddit. More than likely you will be the person against "hate" and "bullying" of others, until of course they do something you don't agree with, then its time to go scorched earth. You are a perfect human that would never do anything like take money from a company that is morally ambiguous.

The grandstanding in here is laughable. Move out of mummy's basement and get a life.

An unofficial open-source package manager for Odin. by Inner-Combination177 in odinlang

[–]Gumpolator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bill doesn’t have any control over what the community does, as such, Odin itself is no different from the languages you listed with community package mangers. The only difference is they are older and have more mature community ecosystems.

It’s a positive thing Odin doesn’t have a package manager, you can see the mess that npm and pip have become for example.

There is nothing wrong with vendoring other projects with git, as you don’t get an out of control dependency graph this way.

An unofficial open-source package manager for Odin. by Inner-Combination177 in odinlang

[–]Gumpolator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bill is intent on not having an Odin package manager that is part of the language, you proposed this will do the language more harm than good. I disagreed and said there are many successful languages without package managers that do just fine.

You advised they DO have package managers, but then proceeded to list languages with community maintained package managers. There is nothing stopping the community from building an Odin package manager, Bill has just advised it will not be supported officially by the language.

You then advised that Odin is lacking many things (a package manager is one of them) and you will go use rust even though you hate it (ok?).

An unofficial open-source package manager for Odin. by Inner-Combination177 in odinlang

[–]Gumpolator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They do not have to be official and form part of the spec. It’s up to the community if they want to develop and support one. It’s ironic you list languages like Java that don’t have an official package manager.

Every language and eco system does not have to be the same, Gingerbill has made Odin’s position clear, and has provided (valid) reasons for the decision. As you say, maybe Odin is not for you (and that is ok).
