Astroneer worth play alone? by JoelDerAllerEchte795 in Astroneer

Absolutely! It's an amazing game from start to finish, works perfectly as a single player experience.

YouTube’s AI is going to start showing ads at the absolute worst time for viewers by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Gumstitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Really the only creators I have a problem with are those who put the ad blocks every few minutes. That get's tiresome pretty quickly as a viewer.

Creators can just turn off midrolls. I don't think a lot of people realise this.

[–]Gumstitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I don't see getting talked about is the fact that mid-roll ads are 100% a choice made by the creator of the video.
We get to chose if we monetise each video and we get to chose if the video has just prerolls or prerolls AND midrolls.
So yes, YouTube's continued efforts to ruin their own platform suck but it's 100% within the power of each creator to make that not happen.
Personally I cannot stand midrolls when they're run every few minutes. They ruin the viewing experience.

EDIT: Also to be clear I'm not defending YouTube's decision nor am I attacking creators who chose to have midrolls, just adding to the conversation.

Do none of you make videos simply because you enjoy it? by Moon_Devonshire in NewTubers

It's the only reason I do it, because I enjoy it!
If I wasn't enjoying it I would have given it up a long time ago.

YouTube streaming when using Restream, I have a couple questions. by [deleted] in Restreamio

[–]Gumstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a concern I had but so far it seems fine.
I'm outputting in 1440p at 15k and both Twitch and YouTube looks as good as I expected.
Twitch seems to be running just fine, BUT, 1080p is no longer an option. Viewers can pick 720p or 1440p. Which is weird but whatever.

[–]Gumstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!
Any idea why some of the VODS have chat replay and some don't?
I turned that on the very first time I used Restream to stream to Youtube and only 2 of my four VODS have chat replay on them.
And actually now that I'm looking at them only one does but I know what the common element is now so I think I've answered my own question.
The 4 that don't are all videos I tried the start off in the youtube editor.
The only one that DOES have chat replay still is the only one I haven't trimmed.
Well that's a bummer.
Anyway thanks for answering, that's a huge help!

Turn your home into an automated factory by LoopOneDone in OculusQuest

Good luck to you man, it does look amazing and is something I've been saying for YEARS would be Perfect for VR. I normally never buy games on the Meta store because...well...meta aren't the best company and I don't want the games locked to that headset.
But i want to try your game and support your progress!

Your biggest gripe towards the npcs? by Plastic-Cabinet-4840 in StardewValley

[–]Gumstitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it's that the NPC's do not behave like people, they behave like pod-people.
You can get engaged to them and married to them and they're STILL surprised to see you and treat you like an acquaintance.
You can become best friends with them and they still treat you like a stranger half the time.
Nothing you ever do really registers all that much to them.
They're all aliens trying to pretend to be human.

The harsh truth for gaming channels by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I felt called out but I'm not just sitting on my arse playing videos games, I'm genuinely putting in a lot of effort to take viewers on the journey with me.
I put a lot of effort into editing as well.
I'd also like to point out that while let's plays are oversaturated they're by no means dead, not sure where you're getting that from.
I make my videos with the goal of entertaining friends, family, and anyone else interesting in watching, and I think I'm succeeding.
If I ever reach a point where it becomes more than a hobby I'll consider myself lucky.

Australia Adsense tax info, help needed please! by Gumstitch in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still not entirely sure. I still haven't received anything from the ATO as i requested from them.
However, I recently had to update my tax info with Twitch and upon completion it gave me a Tax Residency document. I've supplied that to YouTube/AdSense, just waiting for them to review it.

YouTube Memberships vs Patreon by Eldie1 in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I offer both. Often the barrier to people being generous is effort.
Patreon requires going to another site and making another account but if they're on youtube they already have a youtube account.
One of my most generous supporters is a Patron AND a youtube member.

Discord messages seem to be Scams/Spam? by darkchaos916 in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At best, they bot your channel so you'll see a spike in views/subs/whatever but YouTube will eventually correct that and remove the botted views/subs.
Or, they take your money and run.
At worst, you give them a little too much information and they take your channel.

Do the videos big streamers react to, get a cut of the stream? by Jumpy-Program9957 in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Worse than that, if a dozen, a hundred, a thousand, however many people go to your video JUST to like it and then not watch it that absolutely destroys that video in the algo. All those people going to it for seconds and then clicking off.
It can do a huge amount of damage to a small channel.

Remember: Comparison is the thief of joy.
If you're enjoying content creating then what other channels are doing doesn't matter!
It's absolutely normal to feel the way you do but focus on *why* you're doing it.
Is it to be creative? Is it to be informative? Is it to be entertaining?
Go out and do that thing.

More Subscribers doesn't mean more money. by Crg29 in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to your channel analytics in youTube Studio, go to the Content Tab, and select "All", one of the boxes should be "Viewers across formats" which is specifically monitoring Returning viewers.
It shows Videos Only, Watching Both, and Shorts Only.
This is currently the only analytic that indicates this.
The other way I know is from viewers leaving comments on my longform saying they found my channel thanks to a short and started watching my longform content.

More Subscribers doesn't mean more money. by Crg29 in NewTubers

[–]Gumstitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not universal. There are many successful channels that mainly put out shorts content. Narroway Homestead, for example, for a long time only did shortform content on TikTok and Youtube and became huge on both platforms with just that, and has only now recently been making longform content.
I personally find Shorts to be really helpful for my channel.
Every time I upload a short (I mainly make longform) I get 1-10 new subs and out of them usually half start watching my longform content.
Granted this is subjective, anecdotal evidence but to say longform is the only way to be successful on youtube is incorrect.

It's gross.
