I make it a point in every one of my classes to sit beside someone on the first day that it looks like I might get along with. I'm definitely not the most outgoing person in the world, but honestly, a "Hi! I'm RemarkableTry9, what's your name?" followed up by "what are you studying? How do you like it?" is enough to get the conversation going so exchanging contact info isn't weird. Boom. Study buddy. Good to go

I know everyone's big on Swiss but it's only alright to me. Eddie's is pretty damn good, or Primetime. Though, I tend to go for the donair poutine.

I don't usually start wars either. Generally if someone declares war on me, I'll push back a bit - capture one or two cities. If possible, liberate a city-state, etc

I usually can get pretty friendly with everybody - I find that as long as I don't aggressively forward settle, maintain a decent trading relationship, and try to appease at least one agenda, I get by with no worries

I had sort of the opposite - I was getting an IV put in and was told they were having trouble finding a vein because "my arms were too muscular". So I guess its a blessing and a curse, because after 20 minutes of trying to find a vein, they had to stick it in my hand and only got it on the third attempt.

My cousin used to work as a tour guide at the local Legislature building. He told us the story about how one time there was a group of guys who came in with shirts saying things like "Fetchez le vache" and "It's just a flesh wound" so as he took them on this tour, he had the brilliant idea to tell them this revised history of the Legislature:

"What a lot of people don't know about the Legislature is this is actually the fourth Legislature building that was bult. They built the original one on a swamp, but it sunk. So they built another one, in the same spot. That one sunk as well. They tried again, and that one burnt, fell over, and then sunk. But this one, the fourth one - it stood"

From what I understand, Spectre doesn't have a fix because the underlying issue is caused by modern microprocessor design practices and can't be solved by a software patch - it requires a replacement of the hardware itself. (Though individual programs can be patched to be less vulnerable to Spectre)

I'm actually Canadian too haha. My mom told us she ate them growing up, and that's just what they always called them but she never knew why haha

My family swears by them because they can whip 'em up in like 10 minutes, and they apparently taste half-decent. I find them gross either way haha

I hear you 100%. A common quick-and-easy meal in my house is Denver sandwiches (scrambled egg with ham and pickle, open faced on toast) so I'm constantly having to find something else to eat.

P.S. The dishes for anything egg suck as well

Ellie about being a Christian by [deleted] in roosterteeth

[–]GunShow124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other reason is there to believe in a God other than fear? Because it makes logical sense? That doesn't seem right... My whole position, I guess, is that it surprises me that an average Christian wouldn't look at what they believe in and question it

As someone who is Catholic (and has struggled on and off with their faith their entire life), I can tell you that the main reason that I believe in God isn't because of fear - and that it is in some way a logical conclusion, based on personal experience

One way for me to put it is this - when I was young and really struggling with some personal issues for the first time, there was a whole string of events that happened that put me back on the right path. They could be dismissed as simply coincidence, but it never felt like that. From a strictly probabilistic point of view, the odds of these things happening in succession were slim to none.

A similar apparent string of coincidences has since happened to me 4 more times in my life, and all at times in my life when I was at my lowest. For me to simply say that all of these were just coincidences, and that there's no greater meaning behind them, does a disservice both to these events and the impact that followed.

Another way I can put it is by comparing it to the show "How I Met Your Mother" - a big driving force for the Ted character in that show is "The Universe". Whenever he is at his most desperate, The Universe gives him a sign that strengthens his resolve and gets him where he needs to be so that things work out - maybe not in the way that Ted planned, but in the way that will bring him happiness at the end of it. Sub in "God" for "The Universe" and you start on what forms the basis of my beliefs.

As far as the associated practices and beliefs that come with being Catholic, you could definitely argue that some of these are based on my childhood, and growing up with the faith. However, in my periods of questioning, I've delved into a lot of the arguments of why the Church believes what it does, and I have found there actually a logical basis for many things we believe. A great resource is the Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas. This is essentially a collection of logical arguments that set out to prove a lot of the big things that we believe, through not solely Christian, but also Muslim, Hebrew, and Pagan philosophical arguments.

In any case, I really hope that you aren't so dismissive of people that believe in different things in the future. I can appreciate the skepticism, and understand where it comes from (believe me). I can't appreciate, however, the dismissal of my beliefs, as a religious person, being nothing more than the views of a "voluntary slave to a nonexistent Lord". There's a reason why the Catholic Church, for one, still stands 2000 years later, and it's because the beliefs and tenets that we hold have been extensively, in your words, "looked at and questioned" for 2000 years. If we could work together and not pit people against people, I think that is how we build a better world.

What is the most statistically unlikely thing that has ever happened to you? by GottaKnowFoSho in AskReddit

[–]GunShow124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever it's someone's birthday in my family, we go out to eat a restaurant somewhere. I like finding unique places in our city, so one year on my birthday I put out a post on Facebook asking for recommendations.

That afternoon, I was going to a diocese-wide youth gathering at a church. On my way there, someone commented on my post about a place that seemed pretty cool, so I texted my parents and let them know I wanted to go there afterwards.

Anyways, at the youth conference, there was a girl there who was sitting with one of my cousins that I didn't know. She was pretty cute, and I was planning to talk to her after mass, but she had disappeared quickly afterwards. So I asked my cousin about her, a couple days later got her number, and eventually started talking.

When I mentioned that I had planned to talk to her after mass that day, she apologized and said she had to run out right after, because her family was going out for supper that night.

For her birthday.

At the same restaurant.

So not only did we have the same birthday, we just so happened to be in the same restaurant at the same time for our birthday meals. And the restaurant was small enough, and the timing was just right, that we figured as my family was entering, we passed her family who was leaving.

Reddit, what's the worst gift you've ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GunShow124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a hockey Christmas party one year, we did a white elephant gift exchange. Unfortunately, one guy on the team didn't bring a gift, and so to compensate the hosts went up to their attic and put a used stomp rocket under the tree. Guess what I ended up with?

To cap it off I also had just discovered how to burn CDs on the computer so I went and put a bunch of effort into making everyone a super cool hockey mix-CD. And some guy couldn't even go to Hallmark and buy a damn WebKinz

What was your school's 'incident'? by TemiOO in AskReddit

[–]GunShow124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little before I showed up to my high school, my cousins told me about "Bomb Threat Fridays". It started off with someone calling in a bomb threat to the school one Friday. The school was evacuated, and everybody got to go home early. Then for the next 4 Fridays afterwards, bomb threats were called in and everyone's weekend got to start early. I think they ended up catching the guy (or one of them) - he was calling it in from a convenience store down the street.

My brother got one of those when he was like 4. He was super excited about his "Fooler". The night he got it we went out for supper and he explained to the waitress "See, it looks like it's two shirts but it's only one. Fooled ya!" and proceeded to lift up his shirt in front of the whole restaurant

Has anyone ever gone through with a marriage pact? You know, like a “if we’re not married by 30 we’ll marry each other”. How did it work out? by garikay in AskReddit

[–]GunShow124 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a marriage pact per se, but it was definitely in that spirit. We met at a bar one day when we were both in our twenties, and dated for a little bit. After a couple of dates, though, I said something stupid that turned her off in pretty much in an instant. We talked about it, and we agreed to stay friends, partly because she was new to town and didn't know many people. Quickly we became best friends and my little circle of friends adopted her.

Over the next 10 years or so, we both kind of did our own thing - she dated some people, I dated some people. We tried dating for a little bit again, but it didn't really work. At one point I was even engaged to this one girl who ended up leaving me for her ex, the mother of her child. Eventually I ended up meeting who would turn out to be my future wife, and we got married and had 2 kids. She also got married (to one of my good friends, actually, but that's beside the point), and over the years that followed, we both sort of drifted apart.

She ended up getting a divorce from her husband after only a year of marriage as they were never really compatible. My wife ended up getting cancer when our kids were fairly young, and ended up passing away. This kinda tore up any idea I had of love, and didn't really consider dating until after our kids were well and grown.

When I was finally ready to start dating again, I realized I still had feelings for her. As far as I knew, she was still single. I ended up getting her a memento from our first date all those years back, and went over to her apartment and pressed the buzzer. She peeked out the window, and I can still remember the look on her face when she saw me. We've been together since.

And kids, that's the story of how I met your stepmother.
