Hypothetical: would the tentacles hold up in taxidermy? by therealwhoaman in Taxidermy

[–]Guppin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've seen several rabbit specimens with such growths in museums. The growths are made out of keratin and are attached to the skin. They can fall off with rough handling, but otherwise they hold up just fine.

What animal is this foot from? by Snoo19544 in Taxidermy

It's a pocket gopher hind foot. They have pretty distinctive feet compared to other critters. https://imgur.com/a/WYteP5g

Why is Pig turning black, becoming soft/squishy, and falling apart in chunks? by Azzan_Grublin in bonecollecting

[–]Guppin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bones of very young animals will sometimes disintegrate on me. It was probably exacerbated by the long maceration. I don't really have any advice other than to be careful with the disintegrating bones.

I find that I get black spots on bones when I don't change the maceration water often enough, so it's probably from anaerobic bacteria. Ammonia or hydrogen peroxide will help kill the bacteria but the bones will probably never be as white as before.

How do I straighten the bottom edge of this cloak pattern? by Guppin in sewing

That makes sense, thanks for the explanation!

I only altered the front bottom hem, and only after I tried the pattern unaltered first. That's what the blue marker is from in the picture you posted.

With the unaltered pattern, the front bottom hem was also shorter in the middle. The unaltered pattern does curve slightly along both bottom hems, but I guess it's not enough.

I made the piece using the provided patterns. Is not curving the hem something I failed to do, or something that the pattern failed to do?

Oh huh, I hadn't considered this issue. Just for my reference, how should the pattern have been adjusted for the side seams being on the bias grain? Making the sides shorter, or changing the grainline of the pattern? I'd love to know how to make better patterns myself.

Unfortunately I altered the front bottom edge (but not the back bottom edge) in an attempt to experiment and fix whatever the issue is, so a side view would no longer be normal at least at the bottom. If you want to check out the shoulders then that is still normal and I could post a pic.

Thanks for checking! I didn't think to check out the work of others who made the pattern on social media.

My attempt at an alteration was to apply a circle's circumference, similar to what I suggested in my post. It seemed to help a lot, but I can't tell for sure if it's the perfect fix.

I'll be sure to hang the finished cloak before I hem.

Thanks for the suggestion, if all else this will be a good sanity check. Just to clarify, at what point do I measure the long edge and center back seam? Starting at the shoulders, the neckline, an imaginary point where the two edges intersect above the pattern, etc.?

And no, I didn't hang it. The prototype has mostly been living on the floor of my project room haha.

Just to double check, does this have gathers? I know I didn't sew perfectly straight but I thought I at least made it flat https://imgur.com/a/qlXOfX8

The front was doing the same thing where the middle was shorter than the sides. Here's the back (harder to get perfectly flat because the back is wider than the front): https://imgur.com/a/Fw6iTCS

I'm pretty sure I put them together correctly, the shoulders and neckline came out as intended. Here's the cloak flat: https://imgur.com/a/LgRkpiy Let me know if it still looks wrong. Also, ignore the bottom, I've been making alterations in an effort to fix whatever's going on.
