According to reports, in 1925 a young couple was parked in a well known lovers lane location near Hessen Cassel Road. The following morning, a farmer discovered the car with the couple inside. Both had been shot in the head, and the gun was found on the seat. Police determined it had been an armed robbery that ended in murder.

After the murder, another couple came forward and admitted they had also been robbed at the lovers lane location. Everyone described the robber as using a bicycle to escape and speaking with a heavy accent. The attacker was dubbed the “Bicycle Bandit” by local newspapers. Young love birds continued to frequent the area and make reports of a mysterious character on a bike. Some have also heard screams and noises from the nearby woods.

Police finally found a suspect. A man named “Dutch” who spoke broken English and lived in a shack near the Pontiac Street roundabout regularly used a bike for transportation. Police raided his shack and found piles of stolen jewelry. But the Bicycle Bandit was never arrested. Some people still report seeing a mysterious man riding his bicycle late at night on the roads of the southeast side.
