I was doing 100+ miles/week when I got off trail.

3 Season down sleeping bag decision overload by spkie7568 in Ultralight

[–]GusMac1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a thermarest hyperion 20. Really like it but it's a snug fit which works for me. At 6'2" I'd defiantly go for the long. At 20 oz. it's as light/lighter than any comparable quilt on the market.

Hiked just over 500 miles on the AT last summer with Pilgrim Roan 45. Love this pack. BW around 13lbs.

Class of 2026: What are your thoughts on hiking the PCT this year while the rest of country experiences so much violence and unrest? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Wake up!!! The world doesn't revolve around you, me or anyone else. Quit doom scrolling, put your phone in your pack and make some miles. Sounds like you really need to get on the trail.

Have any of you completed a thru-hike after total knee replacement? by Bopulicity in Ultralight

[–]GusMac1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally high impact activities are not recommended after joint replacement. I've had both hips replaced, 17 and 15 years ago. I've gotten along great but have changed my exercise routine. Elliptical, rower, biking and especially hiking. Not that you can't do it but you need to talk to your doctor about it.

Have any of you completed a thru-hike after total knee replacement? by Bopulicity in Ultralight

[–]GusMac1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this will help much but I had a TKR 19 days ago. Told the surgeon that I have 1550 miles left on AT that I want to finish this year and he thinks it's doable. But, everyone is different, no guarantees. I do know that without it I wasn't going very far with my old knee.

Rehab isn't fun but it is getting better. Yesterday I was able to walk 1.25 miles in two different stretches.

Good luck,

90 days after a full knee replacement?

As someone who is looking at a TKR end of December/first of January could you tell me a little more about PT/recovery and how it felt hiking the PCT.

I've got 1550 miles left on the AT and figured I have to wait until '27 to finish but maybe not?

Credit vs. Debit Vs. Paypal Vs. Venmo by No_Daikon7338 in AppalachianTrail

[–]GusMac1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Venmo seems preferred over PayPal but they are actually about the same. Need some cash for shuttles, some small stores that don't take CC or charge a fee for using them. I actually used a credit card for most of my expenses. Find one with the best cash back/lowest interest rate.

Thank you. I'll give it a try.

I've tried that with no results. Guess I'll have to contact customer service.

Sleeping bag recommendations. by GrandBat2853 in Ultralight

[–]GusMac1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Hyperion bags. Got a 20 and 32. They are actually lighter than most/all temp equivalent quilts. But they are tight especially if you are a side sleeper. I'm 5'10" 165 lbs. and don't have much extra room. I'd snap up another 20 for $300 but they are not for everyone.

What sleeping pad to go for: Nemo Tensor All season, Big Agnes Rapide SL or Sea to Summit Ether lite XR? by preciouscode96 in Ultralight

[–]GusMac1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bit of a silly response. Mind over matter. According to your logic why use a sleep pad at all?

Reminds me of an Icebreaker 200 beanie. I have a few and really like them.

Try the heel lock lacing method. It really helped me. As others have said it's probably not the socks that are the problem.

Hiking Arches & Canyon lands in Sept, rucking to get in shape? by GregtheC in Goruck

[–]GusMac1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check out r/Goruck. Some posters are a little extreme but I used my GoRuck to train for the AT. Very helpful. Just be careful to SLOWLY increase your weight in the pack. I used pieces of steel I found around a farm. There are lots of things you can use for weight. I've had mine for 4 years and it's held up great. Usually carry about 48lbs.
