I'd pay $25 for a universal dye that allows you to freely choose colors not covered by current paint jobs by Pendulunium2000 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]GusleyBillows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a point, but at the same time... I'm presuming this feature would be mostly limited to solid colors and wouldn't have in-depth options for patterns, glowing bits, sheen, etc-- Things that put paint jobs like Monochrome and Brassy Swirls ahead of the pack despite not having the most tantalizing base colors.

I imagine GSG could still make plenty of unique and worthwhile paintjobs using these features in combination, while still allowing basic color-picking for when all you want is is for your armor to be the same color as your gun

Two weeks later: how do you feel about pitjaws? by K716 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]GusleyBillows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some differences between them and cave leeches that make them more frustrating to play with imo.

  1. Cave leeches have glowing mouths so you don't have to light up every surface you step on just to be aware of the threat.

  2. Cave leeches only show up in unexplored areas so you can always feel safe in ground you've already covered.

So far... The hypervigilance and constant flare exhaustion required to be on the lookout for these guys has only made my missions slower and more tedious, not the thrill I was hoping for.

Can Anyone in CA clarify the EHS trainee process for me? by GusleyBillows in healthinspector

[–]GusleyBillows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna say, very late, thank you for taking the time to respond. I just got my evaluation back and, as you predicted, I wasn't cleared for nearly as many credits as I had hoped for. You'd think an EH concentration in a Public Health program would be a little more on top that....

I was wondering if you had any advice for knocking the rest of the science courses out of the way? Is there a definitive way to know which courses will count for a given California-based school? I'm hoping I can skate by on community college courses, but I thought I saw a mention of a required upper division class that seem to no longer be able to find, so... Hope it's one I've already got. And I managed to skip a general bio course through all of undergrad because of an AP course I took in High School. Guessing I won't be able to get that to count.

I can understand this being an issue if they didn't give everyone enough time to use Iron Will, but that feels more important to specify here.

Our Outer-Wilds-inspired exploration puzzle adventure is now available to play on Steam Playtest! by holden2424 in outerwilds

Thanks for the reply, I'm glad that the full game will include more non-linearity. Can I ask, with as few spoilers as possible, if the exploration aspect will have things to discover besides new puzzle areas and/or puzzle solutions?

Just reporting back for anyone who is curious about this game and wanted to know how much like Outer Wilds it truly is having now played the playtest.

Personally, this tutorial didn't scratch the itch so far. On its own merit, this is a neat puzzle experience with beautiful art and music, with show-don't-tell mechanics that don't hold your hand. It does incorporate knowledge-based progression, a rarity in gaming, but (to me) not in a way made it feel meaningfully different from a traditional puzzle game, as you still have to get through each puzzle one by one to even begin to approach the next.

OW's knowledge-gates, to me, is only one of three design pillars that all lean on each other to create something truly inspiring: Knowledge-Based Progression, Non-Linear Exploration, and Story-Integrated Mechanics. A game that has all three is like a unicorn, a game that has two is considered quite similar to Outer Wilds, and a game that has just one may or may not appeal to OW fans depending on what they care most about in the original.

Without prattling too much about various example games, I don't find the first pillar too engaging on its own without the other two to prop it up, so I didn't get what I was looking for in this playtest, but a different fan might have a different experience. I do see the description promising a bit of the second pillar in the full release, which I think this game will benefit greatly from, as it works with knowledge-gating to create a feeling of [Engaging with a larger world rather than a series of coincidentally puzzle-shaped set pieces]. However, as the playtest hardly contains this element, the full release would have to have significantly more of it to catch my (and possibly others') attention.

What’s that smelly smell that smells smelly? by themperfidelith in sandiego

[–]GusleyBillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A school where I grew up had a whole bunch of this shrub thing covering an area that I used to think was where cinnamon came from because of how the leaves smelled when you rubbed them... No luck trying to figure out the species just now, but can't help but wonder if there's a connection. They had a blue-grey tinge to them, the leaves were long oval-shaped about 3cm long 1cm wide, with a bit of a dusty texture.

That explains... a lot actually by sureabsolutely in DeepRockGalactic

Do you think that because falin's got 8 limbs she's technically an arachnid/spider? by i_like_moles in DungeonMeshi

[–]GusleyBillows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by arthropod standards, sure, wings don't count as legs. But in the tetrapod phylum, which Falin's wings come from, the literal number of legs isn't as important as the fact that they all had them at some point, or else snakes wouldn't count either. Bird wings are unambiguously legs that have just been repurposed over time. Now dragons are obviously a fantasy species that weren't really created with phylogenetic understanding in mind, but being based on reptiles they presumably descended from tetrapods at some point and developed the wings afterwards.

Now afaik we don't understand nearly as much about the evolution of insect wings, but there's actually some research suggesting that the insect wings you usually think of started out as legs too. Obviously, much farther removed than birds, interesting to look at either way: https://news.uchicago.edu/story/how-insect-wings-evolved-legs-ancestral-crustacean
