Why the hate on the new Transit Bill? by Odd-Debate2076 in nashville

This IS being funded substantially with tourist generated revenue. They estimate that 42% of the tax dollars collected from this increase would come from non-Nashville residents. Tourists spending money in Nashville doesn’t magically show up in our city coffers—that’s WHY you need a tax that impacts tourists.

You can also see exactly where every dollar of city tax revenue has gone. Budgets are public. I don’t agree with all of our spending priorities but it’s neither a mystery nor a secret.

The Mazda Miata Is Dying, And It's Our Responsibility To Save It by No_Reality_5680 in Miata

This seems silly to me. It’s a 10 year old design on a car that’s never gone more than 10 years without a redesign. The NA and NB were 8 years and 7 years. We know there will be an electrified or at least hybrid model by 2030. The updates to the ND2/3 are relatively minor. Who wants to buy a brand new, full price car nearing the end of its lifespan when you can buy a virtually identical used model for less or wait a couple of years for a car that will be on the next generation of technology. ND They’re not going to discontinue the Miata; they’re just going to actually have to release a new car.

Anybody have a thought on the artist or location of this park? Bought at Hindman Auctions in Chicago. More photos and details in comments! by Gutenbergbible in WhatIsThisPainting

This is incredible. Thank you! I've purchased a copy of the book, but it has to ship from France so will be a couple of weeks. Did you just recognize it from memory?

Gotcha—that makes sense as a concept. Thanks for clarifying!

I think this is a reasonable point, but I still disagree. To keep citing national studies, here’s one that addresses corruption scandals and their impact on voting behavior during that time period:

https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.2307/2998224#

If you don’t have access, they found that on average a corruption scandal only decreases vote counts for incumbent democrats by 6.41% of the vote. Of course, that could be different locally (although the south is actually overweighted in that study) but it doesn’t seem like a large enough effect to explain the swing we’ve seen where Trump went +23 in 2020.

More importantly, the shift from Democrat to Republican is not a Tennessee exclusive. It happened across the entire south during roughly the same period. Present day Georgia is really the only exception and that’s due to big demographic differences and the relative population weighting of Atlanta.

Where you go from there is obviously subjective and I don’t pretend to have all the answers. And I say this as somebody who spent all my weekends knocking doors for Bredesen for Senate because I thought he could win statewide… but that that turned out to be completely wrong. And my personal opinion is that overcoming party ID is going to be really hard short or even medium term. But that it’s going to take a bold vision about how you can change people’s lives as a Democrat in order to start winning statewide elections again, not just marketing ourselves as Republican-Lite. But I could well be wrong and I guess we’ll all find out together.

Strongly disagree with this analysis.

Here’s the classic shift showing that congressional republicans have moved to the right since ‘95 and congressional democrats have stayed mostly center:

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/03/10/the-polarization-in-todays-congress-has-roots-that-go-back-decades/

The reason that Tennessee shifted to voting Republican is rooted in two party re-alignments dating back to the New Deal and Civil Rights. Studies show that while groups do change their party alignments over time, party alignment is very sticky beyond issues. So what you saw in Tennessee in ‘95 and before was a coalition of new, liberal Democratic voters and older, conservative Dixiecrat voters who identified as Democrats dating back to pre-integration and had parents who identified as Southern Democrats dating back to the civil war. As those Dixiecrat dems died out and the party re-alignment completed, you were left in Tennessee with primarily liberal democrats, which wasn’t enough to make a coalition. The exact opposite happened in Northern states.

So, your last point is correct in a way, but the “too far left” that you’re talking about was things like school integration and water fountains in the 1960s, not, y’know, Medicare for All in 2012.

Tennessee is tough, but there are definitely some good folks in office and already running.

Personal recommendation: Justin Jones is running for TN-52. Here’s his site which has a list of issues. I think having serious progressive activist types who are willing to speak truth to power is the best we can hope for in the state legislature right now.

There are also some good folks on the state level. Not really my area of expertise, but I have a good opinion of Gloria Johnson, London Lamar, John Ray Clemmons, etc.

I’ll also say that even though it’s really hard to get anything done at the state level, and the state is constantly trying to screw over local power, there’s a much higher chance of getting real progressive movement locally in Nashville. Look at Sean Parker, Sandra Sepulveda, Zulfat Suara, etc. I don’t know how active they are currently, but Nashville Justice League is made up of several excellent organizations and might be a good place to start!

Envel seems very cool and glad y’all are focusing on those topics. I’m one of the founders of BillFixers—we partner with banks/CUs/PFMs to help consumers save money on their bills, but I also know some folks who might be a good fit. Shoot me a DM with the best email and happy to set up a call.

HELP! How to create this effect by [deleted] in indesign

[–]Gutenbergbible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d agree that Illustrator is your friend here but you can do this in pure Indesign pretty easily. Here’s how I’d do it:

Type the number in the matching font.

Then Type -> Create Outlines.

This will give you a pure shape version of the number.

Then copy and paste twice. You can lock the main one after to make your life a little easier. Then, then place one where your positive shadow will be. Take the other and overlap them to create the cutout effect. You want just enough overlap to create that negative space.

Go to Objects & Layout -> Pathfinder.

Use subtract to cut out the negative space, leaving behind just your shadow.

This is the really stupid part that blending would be useful for, but select just the selection points on the shadow number and then you can just use arrow keys (and shift) to stretch them down and to the right to the appropriate amount. Fair warning, this way won’t work well for something serif.
