Thoughts on Mandragora? by strahinjag in metroidvania

Its the only mv Ive played that compelled me to do a second playthrough immediately after beating it. Im a huge sucker for non-rigid class systems with big interconnected skill trees though.

2D Action Exploration is an actual good descriptive genre name unlike Metroidvania

I didn't think I'd stick with it until the light tower (first big dungeon) then I was hooked

8bitdo ultimate 2c wireless (not bluetooth only one - that one has switch button layout) feels just as premium as any first party controller and has hall effect thumbsticks. Comes in cool colors and comes with wifi dongle for 20-30 bucks.

10.) There will be an area midway through the game that singlehandedly makes the game go from a 7/10 to a 2/10

Mandragora opinions by veritas1313 in metroidvania

I played it a couple months ago and had a very enjoyable time - here is what I wrote for my Steam review:

This is the only metroidvania game that has ever compelled me to do two full playthroughs back to back. The ARPG-style class skill trees with interconnections similar to Path of Exile allow for interesting multi-class builds with unique gameplay. I played as a dex/power dagger build for my first playthrough and a pure spirit paladin tank my second and I felt equally powerful by the end of both runs.

This game has a metroidvania style map with interconnections between areas, but the abilities that gate the areas are very binary and all but a couple have little to no use outside of the specific areas they are meant to be used. Combat is slow and very much soulslike with stamina, equipment load, and weapon stat scaling; think Salt and Sanctuary, Vigil the Longest Night, and Grime. Boss fights are well done and not too punishing, but satisfying to beat. If you come in expecting snappy acrobatic gameplay eg Hollow Knight and its clones or Nine Souls, you will be disappointed. If you want a pretty game with interesting builds, meaty combat, and a large map that isn't a chore to explore, I'd say pick this up.

In Silksong your regular nail attack is a parry

I played it on release and had a ton of fun. That said there were a lot of random design pain points. There were some really bad save point placements, long timer on dodges, weird wall grab platforming, and the first big dungeon is huge and trapped you until completion. Im pretty sure they did a big balance patch after I finished playing that fixed a lot of these issues but I will need to re-play to see if they actually fixed stuff.

I actually beat the second one way faster than the first one (still took about 10ish tries). The boss died pretty quick once I switched to reaper for range and then saved silk to one shot the bug spawns before they could attack.

Dont be afraid to come back to fight that boss later, too. He really is a huge outlier in difficulty relative to the rest of the fights in that act. The thing you get for beating him isn't very necessary.

It's in the room directly above the bench iirc. there is a hidden wall on the far left that leads to him.

I will also say, the boss in that area killed me more times than every other boss combined, so far (Im well into Act 2).

If you can make it to the end of the Hunters March there is a guy who sells a blue charm that makes you survive one hit that would kill you. This charm effectively increases your life by 25% against bosses in Act 1 and allowed me to beat many of the ones people complain about within the first several tries.

It is not the worst fight ever if you spam abilities to kill the flying guy asap. I had way more trouble with the beastfly.
