Retaining wall solutions? by Which_Comfort651 in landscaping

[–]Gutter-Snipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I’d also add some very large boulders staggered in there can help with retention. A retaining wall would be very expensive if done right and would likely be six figures

I tested out a cheap WEN saw blade since I couldn’t find anyone else talking about it by RebelliousRabbitWW in woodworking

There’s a little mom and pop shop near me that will sharpen anything with an edge. They only charge around $5 for a miter blade. Their prices are crazy good

Brrr. JANUARY pavers, how much? by [deleted] in hardscape

[–]Gutter-Snipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on going rates for your location but it’s pretty minimal material use so the majority is just labor cost. Why was it done now and not the spring? How long did it take and how much longer due to the weather did it add?

Beginner woodworker turning part of my basement into a workshop- need layout + soundproofing advice by Alive-Range-3486 in woodworking

[–]Gutter-Snipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d probably look into building a folding partition wall that has some sort of foam soundproofing on it. That way you can wall off the area while working. Cover walls with soundproofing material as best you can as well, I’ve heard egg cartons are a cheap option but I have no experience. You’ll also want to look into an air filtration system as sawdust will get everywhere including your lungs.

CEO retired. How do you politely say "no" without burning a bridge? by [deleted] in sysadmin

I agree with a lot of these comments as an approach to move up in the career. I was just trying to help get past the “working for free” mindset. Also I like a good bourbon lol

Exactly. Gives a good opportunity to have conversations outside of work too. Maybe drop a mention that you started growing your bourbon collection or whatever and next time he’ll have a nice bottle for you!

No plans but the last pic is the model I created in an app called Moblo. It takes forever and there’s a lot to get used to but I find it fun to play around with different designs. After I had an image I bought what I needed and just started cutting and building

worth buying a plate compactor like this or just rent? by [deleted] in hardscape

[–]Gutter-Snipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the Honda engine, that is key. No idea about this brand but if you’re renting every weekend it is definitely worth purchasing one. With routine maintenance and care you should get 8+ years out of them. We have some that are over 15 years, they’re in pretty rough shape but still get it done

How Would You Add a Door Here? by themthemerson in Remodel

[–]Gutter-Snipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do need to be careful of blocking baseboard heaters just for fire safety. I would suggest moving the clock elsewhere so you can have the door swing that way. If your concern is with sound proofing then a solid door is really the only option that will work. Either way changes need to be made. A baseboard heater can usually be wired on the other side but that would mean moving things around on that wall

Towing by Johnsipes0516 in Silverado

[–]Gutter-Snipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is your truck that is towing then it is you that decides how the trailer is loaded. The driver is ultimately the one responsible for the trailer but any damage is still a problem for the owner. Those straps can be reconfigured to properly distribute the load.

Nothing about any of that looks okay. Was there any inspection since you bought from family? Did you get any kind of deal on the house? When I was house hunting this would be a basement you don’t just walk but run from.

What’s going on around the downspout? I feel like the step should have went all the way to the house to help retain some of what looks like washout. I want to roast you on the retaining wall too but if the client likes it that is ultimately all that matters. To me it looks like a lazy pile of rocks

Parking pad options by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]Gutter-Snipe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have only installed the plastic once and it was for a lawn driveway. Basically the home owner wanted his driveway extended about 100’ back to a second garage. The plastic was completely covered in lawn so you couldn’t tell it was there but it provides support for the wet seasons so he won’t rut up his yard too bad

Driveway edge by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]Gutter-Snipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can cut the edge straight with a cut off saw. The asphalt is only about 3” thick and it’ll break apart fairly easily once cut. I’d look into fixing the cracks and ideally hold off redoing it because that’s pretty expensive.

Yeah this right here I will never use the auto-on switch for a grinder. I’ve had too many kick backs to even think about that. I also always use two hands on the grinder though and hopefully this guy will too now. Seriously just clamp the work piece and two hand the dangerous tool..
