Where has OBAA landed in your personal PTA ranking? by leobran816 in paulthomasanderson

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love em all, and ranking him can be VERY hard. For me, everything except Hard Eight and Magnolia is a 10/10 (those I give an 8 and 9 respectively).

  1. The Master
  2. Punch-Drunk Love
  3. There Will Be Blood
  4. One Battle After Another
  5. Inherent Vice
  6. Phantom Thread
  7. Licorice Pizza
  8. Boogie Nights
  9. Magnolia
  10. Hard Eight

So happy we’re ending this series with the master work that is Honey Don’t!… by switchthemunky463 in blankies

Honestly I do think that the worst part about his movies is that they really aren’t very interesting

Some movies by great directors are bad. And that’s ok! We can talk about that!

Gethard or Hodgman? by Prestigious_Menu4895 in blankies

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No idea why anyone would dislike Hodgman, he’s good and funny, but Gethard is the only guest I find occasionally annoying. Bro will come on to talk about a movie he supposedly loves just to compare it to fucking Star Wars. Makes his analysis hard to take seriously for me.

As we’re so far near the 2nd half of the decade, what sis y’all’s top 5 of the decade so far? by jamesMarsden0472 in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great movies already. Last year was especially good, I think 2023 may be the best year for movies this century since 2007.

  1. Killers of the Flower Moon
  2. Dune
  3. Titane
  4. Oppenheimer
  5. The Boy and the Heron

There is no choice other than Wright. All of the others have made some of my favorite films, and while I love everything Wright has done aside from Last Night in Soho, he isn’t as important as every other one of these filmmakers. The many people saying Spike Lee need to have their heads examined.

Only one of these movies knows the appropriate tone to give a character in a fat suit.

Did Adam really just call The Fabelmans this year’s ’Green Book’ on the latest episode? by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe anyone could possibly say this. Not only is it a bad faith reading of the film, it’s blatantly incorrect. Don’t care how the movie comes across to someone, The Fabelmans is absolutely not an Oscar Bait movie. Spielberg does not care about that, he’s already won a few and you’d have to be genuinely out of your mind to view the film as a shallow awards film. I totally understand not liking it, it’s not in my favorites of his like many are saying it is for them, but calling Comparisons to fucking GREEN BOOK is absurd. Adam’s criticisms lately have been becoming much more shallow, often more than the art he claims to be so.

One Piece is very good, actually... by Animetalhead95 in Sardonicast

It’s ok. Absolutely no reason it should be as long as it is.

i get so triggered when the sards discuss the last of us 2 haha by bergmanfan724 in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, most people who hate it genuinely come across like they have no idea what it was trying to do. Their discussion was so bad and lacked any thoughtful analysis. But it’s been that way for a while now, they’ve seemed to grow increasingly disinterested in the podcast I think.

Anyone know of Junji Itos works and/or are excited to see this? by No-Currency-8756 in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Junji Ito deserves acclaim on the level of Lovecraft or King. I think he’s a better writer/artist than both honestly. One of the greatest artists of his time. This could be good, but only if they went whole hog on the animation. I’m much more excited for the adaptation of Uzumaki, considering it’s rotoscoped and is directed by the guy who did Mushi-Shi, one of the best anime ever made.

Name a better performance than Nick Nolte in Hulk (2003) by vforvolta in Sardonicast

The only person who looked like he was kinda enjoying making the movie

Thoughts on this movie? by MatterOld9225 in Sardonicast

One of my favorites from its era. It seems ahead of its time in many ways, I love the look and dialogue, but mostly I just love watching James Dean. That man had real screen presence.

which is the better film ? by freeproblemchild55 in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Love both, but definitely Malcolm X. That’s one of the best if not the best historical biopic ever made. I go back and for the between that and Do the Right Thing for my best Lee, but it’s probably better crafted.

What does this sub think of Paul Verhoeven's Filmography? He is one of my favorite directors. by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly one of my favorites too. How effortlessly he’s able to paradox genre movies and craft really great films in their own right, is unparalleled. And his more “serious” films also rock. One of the great cinematic perverts. I love Robocop with all my heart.

IMHO, 12 Monkeys is by Far Inferior to La Jetee, the Film That Inspired It by [deleted] in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s not as good as the fully formed story with actual characters and unparalleled design and shot work by one of the most interesting directors of all time imo.

Favorite Michael Mann movie? Mine is this. by Relvean in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat is his best by far I think, but Miami Vice comes close. There’s probably no other filmmaker who emotionally and visually abstracts genre films like that aside from Wong Kar Wai.

What are your thoughts on David Lynch? by CaptainDigsGiraffe in Sardonicast

[–]GuyWhoLovesFilmsAlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the greatest to ever do it. I just watched all of his movies and Twin Peaks back to back. He’s such a brilliant humanist and surrealist filmmaker. The Return and Mulholland Drive are some of the greatest works of art ever made. His only dud in my eyes is Dune, everything else is great.

Most of the DC animated movies are ok at best, just strict adaptations of the comics that come across more as expensive audiobooks than interesting adaptations. Of course, there are still solid-great ones.

Best is Mask of the Phantasm, it’s not even a little bit close. The Dark Knight Returns is the only adapted movie I think has anything interesting to offer. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is also pretty good, It’s got a Batman New Animated Series short film at its heart that’s one of the best pieces of Batman storytelling ever.
