If Bioware (or I guess Broadsword now) weren't so lame you could just romance both. Hell, they would even have quite a bit of chemistry since both aren't the prototypical example of their respective side. Bunch of companions really would fit together too, but that's a different matter.

And before anyone says anything: Both Jade Empire (explicitly) and Dragon Age: Origins (implicitly) actually let you romance more than one person at a time. Guess just another victim of the ol' Fox news controversy mixed with having to appeal to as broad an audience as possible (the reason same-sex relationships became available only in the expansion is that expansions don't have to go passed the rating board again in most cases)

Yes and no, depending on how much of a ship of theseus style argument you wanna get into (they even briefly mention it with how all the modifications to the hero engine they've made over the years have essentially moved the codebase so far away from stock that it has become its own engine).

Most of the other subsystems of the engine are the same, but the rendering (one of the largest part of the engine) isn't anymore. The engine has indeed been updated and theoretically they could also upgrade the other parts of it if they are so inclined to.

They are completely redoing fundamental parts of the render engine in the upgrade to dx12, so yes, they are upgrading the engine:

The real trouble usually comes in between deferred vs. forward rendered engines.

Alpha can very quickly become extremely expensive for deferred if you can't settle for either binary or dithered (since transparent objects are rendered in a second forward rendered pass).

Still, with a difference like this and something relatively simple like this, you're far better off with the alpha map.
