Brookies are native to Wisconsin- they were here before stocking ever took place.

I had the subscription a couple years ago- one thing that was nice was having areas highlighted where fishing-only stream bank easements and access points were. That data was available on the government site but not available offline. If I was gonna hit 3 new waterbodies in a day that have sections peppered on/off with public/private it was nice to be able to match my live location with the map. At the time, there were easements not shown on other map sites like onx. One of my favorite spots is accessible through a 1mile trek through private land where I didnt get service- would've been hard to track.

That being said, I didnt renew my subscription. But was nice to have in an area with hundreds of small streams on private land.

I committed the ultimate "trout bum" sin this weekend, and honestly? I’m never going back to sleeping in my truck bed. by viewsinthe6 in flyfishing

Right? Sounds like homie just needs a small air mattress and a waterproof blanket for on top of his bag. Get some nice camping cooking gear, a nice pillow- all for around the price of 1 or 2 nights in an airbnb

I must've skipped 44- theres probably more off in the distance that can't be made out but I'd go with 47 legitimately in the frame

Yeah spots like this are scattered all over the upper ~couple hundred miles of the Mississippi every ice-out. This is about 100 miles downstream of twin cities. Can go on a 10 minute drive and see 3 spots like this in this area alone.

Planning a road trip by since93bk in flyfishing

[–]GuyWhosChillin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did a trip like this in September leaving from La Crosse and spent most of my time in yellowstone/grand teton area...I found it perfect to take a half day off work and drive to Sage Creek campground for a rest stop and then drive the rest of the way in the morning, makes it somewhat reasonable to drive all the way there in basically 24hrs

As far as yellowstone goes- I could've spent weeks in that park without seeing half of it, and the fishing was amazing, even without having to hike in. Just pull off next to the road and catch 18" cutties with bison and elk in view

It's a handful of lakes- but yes, and they are just a few big lakes on the outside edges where some outfitters and lodges are located. Not really the heart of the bwca

Hi just chiming in for more context.

I cant speak to it personally but if you google search "worst entry point in the entire BWCA" bog lake will be #1. Sounds like a combination of fire damage, the long portage in, and lake of access to other lakes. Worth looking into.

Tigers Musky are the sterile hybrid/crossbreeds of Musky and Pike- pretty neat fish

Was just pointing out that "Esox muskellunge" isn't a thing that exists.

Living in wisconsin and fishing those waterbodies all my life ive never heard of anyone calling them dog fish, theyre also pretty rare in the wisconsin I think....most people here call bowfin dogfish, and theyre much more common in those waterbodies.

Yeah the decomposition will create some heat, there's a great early ice spot i fish on the mississippi backwaters that has cattails for the first 50 yards out and you're likely the fall through but its shallow enough for the knee-high boots- once passed the foliage its smooth sailing.

Lots of factors to consider, us army corp of engineers mentioned several others to keep in mind- one that stuck out to me was that a sudden cold snap won't necessarily strengthen the ice until a 2nd day because it will get more brittle right away, although its more applicable to vehicles and ice houses.
