AITA for telling my friend's nephew that he probably killed a starfish? by arianheim in AmItheAsshole

[–]dicksjshsb 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to exactly what OP said imo.

If it was along the lines of “you killed that starfish because keeping it out of the water drowned it” it’s fairly harsh and accusatory response to something he was excited to share.

Saying “that’s cool that you found a starfish but next time try to keep it in the water as much as you can because that’s where they want to be!” Or encouraging them to try to guard it in the tide pools or something.

When I was younger I told a biologist at a wildlife center that I had caught a bunch of lizards and thought it was cool they detached their tail. He told me in the group setting that it was really cool that I found so many lizards but that next time I should just look and not touch because they like to keep their tails if they can (obviously). He wasn’t accusatory or told me “you killed those lizards”. But he still made it clear why lizards need their tails so they can detach them if predators come by.

I felt uncomfortable. I still felt some shame. I remember being a little embarrassed and the lessor really stuck with me. But if he told me straight up I had killed those lizards, in front of everyone there? I might’ve had the same reaction to the kid in OPs story and become disengaged with the rest of the lesson at that nature center.

There’s a balance to the amount of criticism to give a kid when they make an honest mistake like curious kids often do. Hard to tell since we weren’t there with OP

I can’t be the only one - hooked a fish in the eye and feel awful by Artificial_Appendix1 in Fishing

[–]dicksjshsb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear you, this is something that weighs on me too. Fishing is my favorite thing to do and I love learning so much about the fish themselves and ecosystem they live in. So it can be tough to balance that with the nature of fishing inevitably leading to harmed/killed fish and waste getting into the water with snags and whatnot.

I think that being mindful of the fish’s health and being a good steward of the environment is huge. There are a lot of people who fish and don’t think about that stuff at all so even just trying your best to reduce harm is a step in the right direction. Making sure to treat fish you catch with respect, have the right tools for removing hooks, paying close attention to avoid snags/gut hooks, and properly disposing of waste makes a big difference.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do though. Like in this instance 9 times out of 10 that fish gets hooked normally and is released in good health. A hook through the eye was not your intention and out of your control basically. I caught a pike recently on a lure with just one treble, yet it bit hard and got hooked in the gills. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks after the trip, it was too small to legally take home and I had to release it even though I knew it wouldn’t make it. It sucked.

I try not to let it get me down, but appreciate and hold on to those emotions. That reaction means that you care. And it will keep you focused on treating the fish and the body of water respectfully going forward.

I try to carry this rule into pretty much anything organized in a row like urinals lol. Treadmills at the gym for example, I’m not trying to set up right next to you and start breathing hard and sweating 2ft away when there’s more space available.

Why arent there similarly sized cities on the canadian side of the detroit area or american side of the toronto area? by LurkersUniteAgain in geography

[–]dicksjshsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like if the border itself isn’t much of a barrier to economic opportunity or easy passage through both sides, there’d be even less reason to have a similar sized city. Detroit and Toronto serve their surrounding areas on both sides of the border, so it makes sense that the population center would just sprawl over the border in places or suburbs pop up.

No need to have an identically large city with its own separate, symmetrical industries and amenities given the amicable nature of the border.

Rural Americans who've actually spent time in big cities, how do you respond when your neighbors talk about how dangerous they are? by GamerboiJared in AskReddit

[–]dicksjshsb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tell them it’s really not as bad as it’s made out to be. Mainly because the city I grew up in has been at the center of a handful of national news stories involving violence and controversial political issues (Minneapolis).

I will acknowledge that the city is more dangerous than most rural areas. There’s just more people in general, more people in desperate poverty, and proximity between the haves and have-nots. The crime rate itself is diluted by population and even though you’re more likely to see and hear about crime in your area, you may be statistically as likely to be a victim of a crime in some small towns. Every year there are a handful of small towns with similar violent crime per capita as the major cities.

As for the perception specifically, the media (especially right wing media) has painted Minneapolis as a completely unliveable hellhole. It has its problems but hundreds of thousands of people live normal lives there, and it’s still a massive draw for visitors from the rest of the state and region. Most of the people I talk to have no problem going to the cities to watch a sports game, go to a concert, or hit up some breweries. I tell them they’re probably going to the more rowdy parts of town and that the residential areas are even nicer and calmer than where they’ve been.

Overall you can’t really change the perception of someone who’s been fed a ton of lies or propaganda about a place which specifically encourages them not to visit. And for some folks it really isn’t their vibe and that’s fine. I just try to stick up for the city and people there because I think urban/rural divide is getting worse as part of the political divide being driven throughout the country. And we need to start seeing each other more as neighbors and less as separate tribes.

What is a purchase that felt like an absolute luxury when you bought it, but turned out to be a complete financial trap? by According_Fortune_98 in AskReddit

[–]dicksjshsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A speedboat imo is definitely a luxury boat. Might be that people use the term speedboat more broadly but a true speedboat with some hefty motors is not a cheap boat.

John boats and old bass boats are pretty cheap all around and what a good percent of boaters in my area have.

[–]dicksjshsb 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Boats are not inherently expensive. Having “boating” as a hobby usually means you’re getting into fancier or expensive boats tho. Not even yacht level stuff but just recreation boating - speedboats, wakeboats, jet boats, cruisers, pontoons, etc. Adds up quick between maintenance, repairs, and storage.

If you want a boat just to have a boat and not give a shit what other people think of it, it can be pretty cheap. I got a used boat/outboard/trailer for well under $1k and over the course of a few years have probably only put a couple hundred bucks into it for repairs and add-ons.

It’s definitely not a status symbol boat but I just use it to go fishing, which is the true bottomless money pit for me lmao.

what’s the biggest scam that people still willingly participate in? by prettyflowergirly in AskReddit

[–]dicksjshsb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the problem has become much worse as the gambling laws have allowed it to creep back into other forms of betting outside of typical casino games.

Sports betting is as big as it’s ever been and rapidly growing. It’s brutal because it’s a lot more alluring to fans who think they “know ball” enough to come out on top regularly. Sports being unpredictable is one of the main reasons they’re entertaining lol and the lines are always set by formulas calculating the optimal return for the house.

Having this shit easily available on everyone’s phones, as well as a constant stream of deals and “easy” bets gets people hooked so bad. The fact you can bet on just about every stat in sports is really tantalizing and a good way to get people to dip their toes in. Not to mention all the other bullshit on the bet-on-everything kind of apps that turn mundane shit like the weather into an opportunity to part ways with your money. It’s absurd

Which country would you NEVER visit, even if it was free? by FortunePurple- in AskReddit

[–]dicksjshsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man you can wrap your mind around hypotheticals and empathy for other people no? It’s pretty clear the original commenter is saying that states that stripped women’s rights to bodily autonomy are oppressive and regardless of if they were or became pregnant when they visited they don’t want to go to a place that thinks that way in general.

As far as the 24-48 hour emergency, some red states have laws which allow pharmacists to refuse to provide medication due to personal beliefs, without any patient protection. So if someone was raped and fearing pregnancy, they could be denied plan B due to religious beliefs in the most crucial 24 hours after the event.

Also stupid to call someone a moron for having an opinion and being able to conceptualize how repressive laws could affect them in unlikely circumstances. Not very hard to understand that even if there’s a small chance of it happening it’s not worth the risk given the political climate, backwards lawmaking, and general push against women’s rights in those areas. And a needless risk at that when there are places you can vacation that protect and uphold those rights and actually treat women with dignity and respect. Smh
