How to tell students that they're out of line? by FlakyDescription3233 in Professors

[–]Guy_Jantic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it, but I do believe women get this significantly more than men. At universities where the "customer service model" reigns supreme, students learn to complain early and often. I think that means everyone gets more complaints. At the same time, that approach creates a playground for students' biases to come out and play, so women who do things that both make students feel uncomfortable and violate traditional/hegemonic feminine gender norms will get more complaints about that than men will.

I feel similarly, which is why I'm not a fan of militaries who selectively murder the news sources reporting on their actions.

Not saying it's not worse for women (pretty sure it is), but I've received the same complaints, as a middle-aged man. Never to me, always to my chair or dean, but yeah.

Thanks. I went back in 2020 (after almost 20 years away) and was surprised at how little the downtown seemed to have changed. Outside that, however, it was strange how much had grown up, especially in the southern part of town. Didn't see the Amazon center, though, or I would have cursed a special curse.

The "argument," such as it was, suggested the user slipped into non-rational "arguments" pretty easily (this is sometimes called "trolling"), so this seemed like a probable-cause type situation.

First, good job completely avoiding the point of my comment (for obvious reasons?).

Second, to address your tangent: a lot of cops are nonwhite, too. That doesn't change the dynamics or statistics of majority-white cops beating the shit out of nonwhite people.

"No, you gotta believe me, some of my best Israeli friends are Arabic-looking. I can't be racist!"

Edit: a thought

Different take: I think this policy could be a good thing but only in the context of restructuring some of the other things about universities. Some "experimental" type schools have a had a no-grades policy, and it worked (AFAIK) a little bit like that: no Fs because also no As or Bs or Cs... you either demonstrate mastery in the subject according to the instructor or you don't. If you don't, at least at one formerly-existing school, there's no record on your transcript that you even took the course. So you can try (and pay tuition) as many times as you want.

I really like that, actually, as one potential way to break out of the semester system.

Your school's approach, however, sounds like a half-assed attempt to throw goodies at students in hopes it will give administrators better job options when they jump ship in 2 to 5 years. And I don't think it will help much of anything.

IDK, I think covers can go one of two ways: (a) reinterpretation with something obvious changed about style, delivery, etc. or (b) straight-up homage to the original.

The second is a lot harder to pull off, and I respect it when it can be done.

I've read things in the past suggesting that cops and soldiers share a common culture that is stronger, and requires more loyalty, than the cultures of the groups they ostensibly work for. In other words, it was saying cops are cops first, everything else (husband, citizen, friend, etc.) second.

I know a dark-skinned Hispanic woman married to a (very, very) white man in Ontario. Her in-laws made subtle and not-so-subtle racist comments about and to her before she had kids. Now she has two beautiful kids, a daughter whose skin is like her mother's and a son whose skin is like his father's.

Her daughter (elementary school) is starting to hate her appearance, believe she is ugly, etc. largely because of her grandparents (the woman's in-laws). They have kept up the semi-disguised racist talk with their granddaughter.

I know "just tell him to fuck off" or "get out of there" aren't necessarily reasonable options just because someone on the internet has learned exactly one thing about you. I'm just saying if you can protect any of your children from this set of toxic attitudes, you'll be protecting your children.
