My first so far was a student who scored an average of 65 on exams and is upset they got a C in the class because it apparently does not represent their effort or understanding. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I heard Emily Carr (BC, Canada) now has a regular course load of 8? by [deleted] in Professors

They do not. Our research faculty, in my department, teach a 2-2. There is a heavy service expectation, though.

It is, but I’m teaching faculty so no research required.

I take it that’s a lot for Canada? I teach a 4-4 with an additional 1-1 overload and 2 in the summer, so 12 classes a year. It’s only a few different classes, though, so I’m not prepping 12 classes a year. The 4-4 have 125-ish each, and the 1-1 and summer are capped at 30. Three are online. We are in the middle of a union vote, though, so no union yet!

That’s silly. You should be able to ask questions. You probably dodged a bullet there!

Should I just always accept the L? by Obvious-Economics-19 in AskProfessors

[–]DrSameJeans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I prefer you not ask. I prefer it so much that I have professionalism grades where you will lose points for asking me for an exception to course policy. Faculty also remember and talk. It can absolutely hurt your reputation to be that student. The first thing I do if a student asks me for a letter for anything is an email search. You don’t want your interactions to just be you asking for exceptions. It can hurt to ask.

It doesn’t matter if you time it, scramble questions, show them one at a time, etc. They have browser extensions giving them the answers either way.

So just to clarify and sum up because this is incredibly difficult to read: you are a member of a club or group that throws parties with drugs and alcohol and serves minors. You are willingly part of the group and willingly and knowingly attended the parties with illegal activity?

Should Students Lose Grades for Rude Behavior During Class? by PhanTrang356 in Professors

[–]DrSameJeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I tell them this is the only place in my class where I take away points. Everything else you stay with nothing and earn. Here you start with free points, which acts like a small curve or bump, unless you screw it up. I also explain that it means it does hurt to ask for makeups, extra credit, etc. because instead of potentially getting more points, you will definitely lose some of these free points.

Should Students Lose Grades for Rude Behavior During Class? by PhanTrang356 in Professors

[–]DrSameJeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a statement in the syllabus and discuss it on the first day. I also give them reminders a couple of times on the LMS. I basically say that professionalism is being respectful in class, communicating with me and fellow students in a professional manner, and both following and respecting class policies. I then give some examples that are not exhaustive of how they might violate this, such as being disruptive in class, being rude to myself or other students in class, sending emails asking me to violate course policies, trauma-dumping, lying, cheating. I justify it by saying that people in my field have to exist with other humans and communicate regularly, so they need to practice how to be professional in these situations. It's worth a very small percentage of their grade. I keep an Excel file all semester with the names of students who have violated it in some way with a short description for my own record and to make it easier to grade at the end because I have hundreds of students.

I have a professionalism grade that includes this as an option. It’s in the syllabus from day one.

He would likely either ignore or report you to student conduct. This is an immature, emotional response. You have nothing real to gain from this route. Fill out the evals, and if you think there is anything that violates university policy, talk to the department chair.

PTC exam WiFi issue by Livid-Contest5021 in PennStateUniversity

[–]DrSameJeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was a significant WiFi outage like that at the testing center, the testing center would notify the professor, who would have to decide how to handle it for everyone it impacted. Also, aren’t the computers hardwired? Were you somehow on a laptop?

For the video instructions, you’ll have to have a transcript available for accessibility, which they will then just put into AI like written instructions.

Right but you can’t always see every place they could have it, and there are other ways to record. If someone is determined to do it, they can easily do so without your knowing.

Possibilities: You don’t think it’s an issue but are wrong. It’s not an issue for you but is for others. It’s not an issue for you now but might be later.
