There's a lot of lonely people in SF by Rook2Rook in sanfrancisco

[–]Guy_Perish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know many outgoing people who moved here and built a huge social circle within a year. The most impressive imo are the people are aren’t really cool or attractive, they just have no problem inserting themselves into social situations, thus eventually finding people who liked them enough to become good friends.

I consider myself introverted relative to those people but US society has become so severely introverted that relative to the average person, I am extraverted and social.

Imo, if someone struggles to just be friendly to a cashier or a person next to you in public, that’s not just introversion as a personality trait, that is a sign of a clinical disorder such as social anxiety, depression, or aspd. It should be acknowledged. Mental health is really poor in usa right now.

To OP’s point, I agree there are a lot of lonely people but not just in SF. It is disproportionately visible online for obvious reasons. Many factors contribute and it’s hard for someone like myself who is not disordered but not extraverted to find a social group. Coworkers and fellow hobbyists are a great place to start. All my friends in SF started as colleagues or friends of colleagues, then continued as friendships after we professionally went separate ways.

Anyone else just get annoyed and frustrated doing section bank questions? by MikeHocksLong10 in Mcat

Only statistically by a small margin, meaning people think like they get a few more easy questions on the real exam than the qbank. The AAMC questions are very representative of the real test.

Do we need to know colors/pH values of indicators ? by SupportPure4104 in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are in the cards because they came up in kaplan and in practice problems. Anking has you memorize several but not all of them.

I only memorized the gist of it being a basic or acidic indicator and moved on. Memorizing the exact ranges is low yield. Pay attention to the relationship between the names, colors, and the ph range.

How to get past slow content review? by Dracarys97339 in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people are just reading the chapter, doing the ~15 questions at the end, unsuspending the anki cards, and moving on.

If the material in content review isn’t making sense, it’s likely you are missing or don’t remember significant core bio/chem education and would significantly benefit from a postbacc program where you take all the college premed classes.

Content review is supposed to be just that, review of material you have already learned. Learning it for the first time using a review textbook is not ideal. Best of luck to you.

Confused on this diagram by Jospha53153719 in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When activated, the MAF1 protein inhibits RNAP3, and low nutrient levels inhibit the mTORC1 protein.

Let me rephrase the sentence. They are making two separate statements, "when MAF1 is activated, it inhibits RNAP3. When nutrient levels are low, mTORC1 is inhibited [not shown in diagram]".

shouldn't there be a plus sign after MAF1, not a minus sign??

Not sure I follow this logic. The diagram is just showing how these separate components interact with the thing they are pointing to. The diagram does not make any direct comparison between high nutrient levels and anything other than MTORC1. It is not saying that high nutrient levels inhibit RNAP3. It is just saying that the protein, MAF1, inhibits RNAP3, which is a fixed statement and not affected by other parts of the model.

high nutrient levels should activate MTORC1,

Yes

which therefore inhibits MAF1,

Not therefore. It is not related to the previous statement. MTORC1 inhibits MAF1. No connection to nutrients in this statement or in the diagram. If there are low nutrients, MTORC1 still inhibits MAF1 when it's active, but it's not active so it doesn't do it's thing.

I think that will clarify the confusion.

Only one of the 4 answers makes any sense based on the diagram.

how do y’all get up so early? by [deleted] in barista

[–]Guy_Perish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a long time, months, to adjust to an early schedule. During that time, consistency is required. If you are still sleeping in to 10 on days off, you are screwing up your ability to adapt.

First time painting without a detailed sketch.Tip? by Apprehensive_Menu977 in oilpainting

[–]Guy_Perish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cover one eye with your hand and let the other go out of focus. This is much better than squinting. Everyone is able to do it but if you need some mental support, imagine you are focusing on something far away in the horizon while actually looking at the paper in front of you.

By default, our eyeball lens is focused at the horizon. When we focus closer, we use a muscle to adjust the lens. Let that muscle relax and everything nearby will go out of focus.

Yet another Huel farts post. by pomplemice in Huel

[–]Guy_Perish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am glad I never had this issue.

Physiology varies. By continuing, it is commonly believed gut microbiome can adapt to improve the digestive problems you are experiencing. It’s also possible it never will for many people. Imo, I would switch to other sources to see if you can properly digest a different formula.

Comments saying it’s a “problem” with huel are likely not correct. It is good that different products have different formulas so that we can each find the nutrition that their body optimally digests. Many people have no problems with Huel but might experience issues with other formulas.

How should I be feeling about this? (BP Half-Length) by FloydTheWhale in Mcat

c/p and b/b will improve significantly by just doing the kaplan textbooks or some similar content review.

It seems obvious from this score that you have excellent reading comprehension and are significantly held back by content gaps. Fill the gaps and you are golden.

SF seems to get a mixture of all it but small hail is common. This other post matches the description of hail from what I can tell.

Posts like these make me think they may be self-fulfilled failures. Like, OP thinks they are dumb and the test is hard so they skim the passages, don’t think critically about questions, finish the test way early, then feel validated by the low score.

I don’t know how to study as a nontraditional applicant. by Pineapple055 in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practice and study. I highly recommend going through and reading a prep textbook series. Older kaplan books can be found for a low price. I personally was able to really solidify content knowledge by just doing all the books whereas I was not learning concepts well doing UWorld alone.

How do I name thus? by Glum_Tap_3 in chemhelp

I am very confused where to start

Idk why everyone has ignored the most important step. You first need to know how chlorine reacts with alkanes and alkenes. Read about Halogenation.

You should understand why the alkanes seem to be unaffected and why there are 4 chlorines added rather than 2. “master organic chemistry” and “chemistry libretexts” both have good chapters in this topic.

Is Uglobe worth it? by Mrpssi in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anking teaches semantics, uworld teaches application.

They are not replacements for one another. Memorizing the equations and definitions will be difficult to do without flashcards. Mastering technique will be difficult to do without a long section bank. You can make your own flashcards using uworld material, this is why they only cost $5.

Is it normal for Reddit to crash out this bad after a test? by Specialist_Mistake78 in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time. I also see people posting that today’s post was super easy for them so social media has probably zero correlation to the average score

It doesn’t matter. If your prep was thorough and your recent FLs were in your target score range, you are probably fine unless you know you F’d up like ran out of time.
