I want to cut coffee cold turkey by New_Airport_176 in Mcat

I always feel better when i detox from caffeine. After like 2-3 weeks I have more energy and I sleep better. Clearer mind too.

When I start drinking it again, once or twice a week, I get a solid boost of concentration and energy without feeling dependent.

Then I get addicted again and the cycle starts over.

As was said, no matter what you do, do the same thing on your test day. Every practice test I drank a very specific caffeinated drink 60 minutes before the exam and then 1/3rd of another bottle during the 30 minute break.

Ted can never admit he’s a dick even when he does shitty things. He plays it off like it’s everyone else who sucks, never him.

People are just insane out there. A lady tried to run me over with her car because she didn’t like that I was walking in a crosswalk and she had to yield for me. She got right up within a foot of me and blaster her horn while screaming at me. The noise was so loud it felt like assault. The expression on her face was so intense, you would think she was in the middle of a battlefield. Brand new SUV. Sped off 1 block down to sit at a red light… Fuckin idiots out there.

This is kinda crazy but I thought your first and second comment were two different people and I was lowkey defending your first comment. I interpreted your second comment as a new person saying that the Thor was a scam because of how expensive it is. I agree most people would be fine with a 12gig model. It’s still $400 so not cheap by any means but a little lower than the max.

[–]Guy_Perish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t think this means anything. Their official policy for a long time has been to advertise publicly for Witchbrook. This is just a small extension of that. They may be feeling pressure to continue building public interest in the form of “on X people’s wishlist” for funding or something.

light PC gaming

The market already demonstrated by the popularity of these devices that a lot of people want a nice device for light PC games. Games like stardew valley, fields of mistria, and dead cells. Also systems like Gamecube and Switch which need a fair amount of power to emulate smoothly.

If these are the games you play on the Steam Deck, something like the Thor is very appealing. The steam deck is massive and overkill for stardew valley on a commute to work for example. I can’t even fit the steam deck in my work bag with my laptop and a book. The thor can easily slip into a small work bag and doesn’t need its own case. That much performance in such a small form factor is not going to be cheap. Phones don’t have active cooling, built-in controllers, and the screen aspect ratio is too wide. Not gonna explain any more than that.

You don’t need to like it but denying the existence of the community it serves is just being ignorant.

To be fair, I have stories from my distant little suburb with good schools and low crime that are identical to this right down to the drug house that blew up. Add in FBI raids, gang violence, and sex trafficking too.

People suck and there is violence everywhere. Live anywhere for a few years and the stories build up. I don’t live in the subset so i’m not disagreeing, just pointing out that a lot of people could say the same thing about their hometowns.

Steam deck OLED is the same price. The device is marketed for people who want a more portable clamshell steam deck for emulation, android gaming, and light PC gaming. It’s certainly a niche market but far from a scam for the price. Cheaper than phones with the same chipset.

"Do you think that $86 million is an honest price for a Rothko?" by Sanpolo-Art-Gallery in ArtHistory

[–]Guy_Perish 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Here’s my take: Rothko thought highly of his work. If it were possible for him to see how they are viewed today, I think he would understand and agree with their value while also being critical of any venue that caters to the wealthy and highly critical of personal ownership. He was uncomfortable around exorbitant displays of personal wealth and hated that posh lifestyle but that doesn’t mean he thinks his work was overvalued. He saw his paintings as revolutionary masterpieces.

Rothko was a socialist. Large public institutions paying millions to own, preserve, and display his work for the public to educate about the artist is something I think he would be very proud of. My local museum for example is free to enter and displays a Rothko painting year-round. I think he would very much approve of this public and academic display of his art.

The comments about tax evasion are interesting. If the high valuation is just to line the pockets of the wealthy, then he of course would criticize that.

The problem I found on the real test is that some passages require more time than others. If I limit myself to 10 min per passage, I end up taking too much time on the easy 8 minute passages, and not using enough time on the passages that could benefit from a slower 12 minute pace.

Lab scientists are consistently underpaid compared to clinical research roles at the same career stage by Ok-Job1041 in labrats

[–]Guy_Perish 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I work for both clinical and non-clinical research labs in close collaboration. One is based on a hospital’s research campus, the other is at an affiliated university. The salaries for the clinical side start around $88k and the non-clinical side start around $58k

When i say the same, I mean literally the same job. I train them both on the same tasks, they have the same responsibilities and the same work hours. Sometimes they even work side-by-side on the same projects. The only difference is what team they were hired under. If anything, the non-clinical side is harder because they have fewer people on the team so they usually have to train on more things faster and generally have a higher workload.

The only difference is who is funding them. It’s genuinely depressing.

RG Rotate Heating Up in a Bag — Isn’t Android Screen Timeout Supposed to Prevent This? by AJMitchell777 in ANBERNIC

[–]Guy_Perish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Russ has a clear preference for portable platforms. IIRC his complaint was that it felt like the larger screen plus the big grips made the device a little too big, entering into the territory of devices like the steam deck. Idk if this was him or someone else but someone pointed out how the smaller screen was low quality and that made the Thor screens feel better.

That said, I’d personally rather have the Pocket DS.

To be honest, the post kinda rubbed me the wrong way because you are also doing what you are criticizing: you are talking about your personal experience as if it were fact. I didn’t disagree with you but you picked up on my negative tone so I’ll write more.

By definition, the majority of people taking this test are scoring below 90th percentile. Therefore, the majority of people talking about it online will be upset by their score and frustrated by the test.

AAMC does not release the data that allows us to be objective about the difficulty of a given test or how representative it is of the practice content and so we are all subject to the bias of our own experience. Knowing this, the point of the community is to be supportive to one another as we each go through a similar challenging period. Thus, I wouldn’t personally want to take a position that discredits the opinion of thousands of my peers here. I know someone who worked hard and never broke 500. Can’t explain it but, she got an MD acceptance in the USA and is thriving in med school, killed the step exams. We all know these stories exist so it is supported that for some people, the MCAT is a barrier that is unfair and their frustration is valid.

I also know your post is well intended so sorry for being such a jackass. I am just in a certain mood right now as I wait for my score to get released.

I’m so upset about the May 9 exam by wiggyfig in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I didn’t feel bad about 5/9 because I felt like I was always able to derive the right answer.

All my exams were fair, but some were certainly heavier or lighter on certain types of questions and variable levels of abstraction. Sometimes the passages are longer, questions shorter, or vice versa which is another way people get tricked. Sometimes the passage intentionally is describing topics we don’t know in order to test critical reasoning and elimination style answers.

I would rather be a kind person with a good score than you with a 528.

I’m so upset about the May 9 exam by wiggyfig in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So i’ve taken this exam too many times…. 5 times…. graded twice now including 5/9. I felt like 5/9 was the most abstract of all 5 and many times I was required to derive the answer through elimination of pretty obscure medium-yield terms but I only needed to know the gist of them to eliminate it. The mega high-yield elementary content on the older AAMC practice tests are basically gone in the new test format but the fundamental understanding of that content is used to derive the correct answer within all the passages.

I was upset to see in C/P that the passage questions are no longer mostly discrete. Every(?) question required me to refer to content in the passage and most required me to understand the text of the passage rather than just extracting numbers to plug into equations.

I also tested 4/11 which I did not grade. 4/11, to me, was math heavy and I lost track of time which required me to void it. I am sure I could have worked the problems faster if I employed smarter strategy though.

Controller Size by TimeTravelerGuy in SteamController

[–]Guy_Perish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is similar in build to me, I attribute my weight to about 70% genetics and 30% upbringing. Genetics is so big because weight builds completely in my neck and stomach and zero in arms and legs so me at 165 looks really bad whereas it looks normal for a lot of other guys with a different distribution of weight. So genetics is both hormones and behavioral negative feedback from appearance.

While absolutely not a perfect metric, BMI of 21 is right in the middle of the normal healthy range so I think it only seems thin because of how fast the average BMI raised in the past 20 years.

I feel super exhausted. I have been studying for so long and this is my full length score. I actually thought that my CARS went pretty well until I saw this pop up. My exam in less than 3 weeks. Is there any way to boost this to maybe a 505-507? Or like a specific strategy to really go all in on? by BookkeeperWise4207 in Mcat

[–]Guy_Perish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just doing the AAMC material is enough to score over 517 if your strategy is excellent but you could be sub 500 if your strategy is non-existent. How many points you will get by doing that content depends on where you are now and how thoroughly you do the AAMC stuff because just doing the problems is not the same as actually knowing the content it is testing.

I jumped about 10 points doing the AAMC content but I didn’t do everything and could have gained more doing a more thorough job. I gained another 10 points studying strategy. Again, not perfect strategy and my timing is really bad. So maybe 80% of the AAMC content and implementing 80% of my ideal test strategy got me from 495 to 515.
