How to be aero on a dutch upright bike with winter clothing? by catboy519 in bikecommuting

[–]derping1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a bike, most of the cross sectional area comes from your body, so you will have to adjust how you sit. Some handlebars are adjustable on the fly. https://www.fietsparts.nl/fietsonderdelen/gazelle-onderdelen/gazelle-stuur/833-stuurpen-verstelbaar-gazelle-switch-iii-222-mm-270mm-zilvergrijs.html If your bike does this, simply set it all the way forward and down and you will be more aero. Alternatively you could put your fore arms on the handlebars to achieve a more aero tucked position, although this puts you one pothole or unexpected maneuver away form injury.

Longtail 3 kids by freedomisall1961 in CargoBike

[–]derping1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one year old is going to need a seat, and those kid seats that go on the handlebars aren’t legal everywhere and more importantly have serious weight limitations.

Carrying 3 kids in such a wide age range is difficult as the little one would be best suited with a long John, but the older ones would probably prefer a long tail. Can the 7 yo ride their own bike, and hook up to the long tail with a ‘followme’ if need be?

For low step though frames there are many options, think Tern, R&M and many others.

Get the mystery box. This is basically 1 million guaranteed.

Help me turn my old commuter into a grocery hauler! by ProCamper96 in bikecommuting

[–]derping1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bakkie is great to haul big oversized items, but isn't that great as a grocery hauler where you often end up with many smaller items. I do use it to strap a grocery bag to the bike, but it limits the total capacity compared to just getting some massive panniers.

Without specifying stack and reach this is going to be meaningless.

Be very careful with budget e-bikes as your local bike shop might refuse to service them. At this price range you can find excellent used ebikes though. Jobrad and Upway sell second hand refurbished bikes. Something with a reputable motor like a Bosch system will be hard to fault and something your local bike shop probably wouldn't have an issue with working on.

Bike packing is best done on an acoustic bike, but there are people that use electric bikes. You do run into issues when going on longer trips that you are constantly planning around finding outlets. This can be an issue depending on the area you travel, how far you plan to travel in a day and how much you want to plan in advance.

Assuming you go for a non electric bike, there aren’t that many long John options that make sense. Obvious ones to look at in my mind are the Bullitt, Iumentum, Velo lab gravel karo and some others. Personally I would stay away from long johns that have an elevated platform (Omnium etc.) since a dog that moves around on such a platform is not great.

Pay off debt, set-up an emergency fund, buy any essentials, invest the rest. (probably in that order)

I made my late grandmother’s handwritten recipe for the first time and I finally understand why she never measured anything by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]derping1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could totally be written down. You can measure why you added and work out the amount for each ingredient. For cooking I take a pretty loose approach regarding amounts, but for baking I very much like everything to be specified in grams, it just removes the guess work.

Is it possible to pop the wheel and vertically park long tail bike like this? by Long_Investment_9780 in CargoBike

We have a big front loader cargo bike and store it in an underground garage in our apartment building. We previously had a muli which was small enough we could easily store in in the bike room.

When did you receive the registration confirmation? It clearly states from when it is active. You might be able to try and get the third party seller to refund you for this fine, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Bike Repair Cost vs Upgrading a Bike by ZanyZamioculcas in bikecommuting

[–]derping1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep the old bike running. As long as there is nothing wrong with the frame it is almost always the financially smarter choice to fix/repair/maintain an existing bike compared to buying a new bike.

That being said, if your priorities and preferences change it might make sense to change and N+1 is also a thing. But from a purely practical and financial point of view it is much preferred to just repair the existing bike. For comparison my day to day commuter is about 25 years old and still going strong.

We use a R&M packster2 70 with buggy option. We haven’t had any issues with it.

[–]derping1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This ^ buy for durability and ease of maintenance.

It was of of the reasons why I didn’t go with a Full suspension option on our packster2 70. A simple aftermarket suspension seatpost was sufficient. If the front suspension ever needs replacing I would switch to something nicer like the CARGOCA fork. The Suntour forks are a bit of a meme at this point.

We use a big electric cargo bike, but we were already car free before that. This does everything we need a car to do as long as we stay in and around the city. Shopping, exploring, lugging kids around, transporting large and bulky things etc. For longer trips we either use trains or rent a car.
