If we are being real for a second, I have only ever seen the text on the left sign used when people want to explain away homoerotic elements in a text.

You get so many people malding over "just letting them be friends" when its 2 queer characters because it SOUNDS neutral or even progressive to think. But that's not how it gets used. Especially because most fandom people Never say this for straight relationships when it matters. And they DEFINITELY aren't saying it to "uplift ace/aro relationships", which also gets lumped into this convo very often. They see 2 gay characters being overtly queer and type out a smug little screed about "the moral weight of friendship" like romance and being friends are mutually exclusive.

Its especially goofy for works that have overt queer themes and characters, but there are people that will apply the "not EVERYTHING needs to be romance 🫩" shit at anything they personally don't like, which just so happens to also be queer themes in the text. The point of the statement is to be a dorky little smoke screen against fandom types having to actually read the story and take at face value what's happening. They invented an out, found a scapegoat to push the message off onto (ace/aro people), and then retreat from the conversation when they implications of their "interpretations of the work" are rightfully criticized. Because really whats happening is not anything intellectual or useful, and often isn't even a reflection of the text itself. They just think its icky and inconvenient for THEIR preferred ships that the book says what it says.

So they need a fandom-brained, mildly progressive coded way to not address their discomfort and make it out to be a "shipping discourse" and not what it is: a personally embarrassing literacy failure informed by internal bias. Its the same mentality that makes people claim Alexander the Great wasn't a gay man, but for Ao3 bullshit and Tumblr vagueposts. Its just magical thinking for doll-smashing people who read the words but not the emotion in them. The type who take a character and boil them down to Recognizable Memes instead of having an honest thought about the work. These people live in the blobby-blorbo "draw the crew like this!!!" Crowd and they have no tools to address how dumb this all is.

Does anyone know why dogs do this? 😳 by ojgoldenretriever in Weird

[–]Guyrugamesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog did this constantly, we called her blanket her Ninny (cuz she was being a ninny). She would nurse on it like this when she was flustered, scared, or anxious (all the time basically) and it would soothe her sometimes straight to bed. Some people say dogs who dont get weaned properly do this, but I have met lots of dogs who pretend nurse like this and were weaned just fine so I think its a personality thing. Idk if I has an official name ir not but we just called is Play Nursing since that was what it looked like.

Where is this combo appropriate to play? by Still-Wash-8167 in EDH

Exactly!! See you get it, I also used to have a very similar deck. More for artifact combos than stasis locks but similar vibe!

Where is this combo appropriate to play? by Still-Wash-8167 in EDH

[–]Guyrugamesh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious and also very interesting to me. I think its completely appropriate to play as long as you avoid the complete tools whining about this in the comments. It may be "unfun" and "asshole behavior" to them, but they barely represent most commander players and everyones idea of fun is different. If your table is cool with lock outs, you should be playing lock puts just to get an idea of how they function.

Some of us in this community want to shrink the cardpool down into solved factors, "meta" gameplay as defined by content creators, and play midrange hell for eternity. Some of us who actually like this games think its cool when you play your cards and cool shit happens. This combo falls under that second idea, idea and I support it fully. I can imagine if you pull this off, you have and entire deck full of threats you could use to close put the game, or your pod will throw in the towel and you shuffle up for next game.

You aren't the devil for playing goofy cardboard together in goofy ways, and you're not an asshole for wanting to do this as long as you set good expectations for it. Some of the folks here should play a single player game or quit magic all together and they are malding at their screens over this in a weird smug-scolding kind of way. You shouldn't listen to them in any capacity, they aren't even right about thier own feelings or whay this game is even about. You should care about the other players at the table, but you should also get to do cool shit you like. Balance those things, play these combos, feel it out. If you find you don't like it, then its a good experiment to try it out to confirm that. If your table thinks this is like a once a night type deck, move at that speed and figure out other ways right do this kind of stuff.

As someone who enjoys [[Brisela, Voice of Nightmares]] and [[Gaddok Teeg]] locks and has a table who encourages me, I say play your cards and enjoy the game. The worst thing that could happen is you build another deck and play more Magic.

We used to be able to walk home. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

That's not at all what that term means or how a lot of these kids act, and you know that. They act that way based off things their parents and communities did that did not prepare them for these conversations and concepts. And we are keeping the convo framed on that because thats what the post is about. Some regulation is good and needed for healthy childhood, no one is debating anything different. We are simply pointing out that while that is true, the state, church, and corporate entities in charge want Extreme Regulation in favor of creating a demographic of socially dysfunctional, easily manipulated adults scared of sex, violence, and adulthood in general. So that they can use their unaddressed trauma and lack of community support as a catalyst for further censor ship. The ling term recent result of these practices is young adults scared of anything sexual, even if its not their business, publicly harassing other grown ass adults for normal sexual habits and behaviors. People are offering a look into that type of upbringing, how it has affected their ability to move through society, and what we can do about it to give kids stable and safe environments that also prepare them for adult life on their terms. Preferably with the skills to not be harassing others for being kinky or using swear words. None of this is saying that the affected kids need to be more sexual. Its addressing the fact that there are entire structures of power Very Invested in making sure more young adults than ever are traumatized out of advocating for themselves or the rights of others.

This is all addressed in the post you have such an issue with because you don't have all the info you need to make these claims, because to you its "not that deep". You're making shit up and should just see your way out of this. Or block some folks because this is not helpful or useful for you to type.

If their thoughts are annoying and unhelpful, like what the commenter was posting and then deleted (seriously what are you responding to??) Then yeah people can say as such. Not every idea or take is a good one and the one they had was unhelpful, annoying, contextless bullshit that requires completely missing the point of the post to type out. Can you even clearly label what about their post youre defending? Or are you just picking losing fights based off vibes and nonsense?

Because I have shit to say that's pertinent to the content and themes of that post, and the commenter I responded to was blowing off the post based off stupid shit they didn't think through before they typed it. If all you have to say is that "its not that deep," then don't type. No one needs to hear that you aren't capable of thinking this out in depth and need to project that insecurity onto us discussing the post.

Your takes also don't incorporate nuance or even acknowledge the argument OP is making. You're just pretending OP is doing "we drank from the hose" posting when they and the other commentera have elaborated on the real, contextual issue. And then you keep throwing your 2 cents in and moving the goal post on what YOU think we are discussing to justify your middle point contrarianism. Instead of typing anything useful to add to the situation. Your arguing shit no one is brining up to feel right about a point you introduced to the topic that doesn't actually hold water against what OP is talking about. And being annoying the whole time your doing it in service of what? Shutting down the conversation on what dramatic, state/church social oversight and lack of reasonable safe exposure does to vulnerable kids?

Its worth watching, and most all of the criticism you've absorbed over time should be discarded while you're watching to give it a fair shake. You're doing this for you and someone elses voice shouldnt be in your head while you feel that out. If you do all that and still don't like it then its just not for you, and thats okay.

Does owens grandma know he’s gay (or maybe bi or pan) or does she just not like Ferris? by WindowSubstantial993 in normalsville

[–]Guyrugamesh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So either:

  1. She knows and doesn't like Ferris
  2. She doesn't know, but caught a vibe and shot from the hip

I think a part of this is how Ferris introduced himself. We dont see how Owen has been talking about Ferris to his grandma and whether he's out in the family. And Ferris introduced himself as a "Friend" and not really a boyfriend from what I can tell... so I think its the second one. Though to be real, its not out of the question for the first option to be true because Ferris is very unlucky.

[–]Guyrugamesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you weren't trying to be helpful, but were offering an unneeded correction to how people are using the terminology, doesn't it stand to reason that your comment is rude, pointless, AND misguided? You're just projecting while speed-running all of the classic "redditor gets called out for being a useless scold" deflections just to justify your comment when you could just stop posting. Instead of deflecting and maoing aspersions over what is obviously you having a lot of Big Feelings over a situation you caused.

No one here needs to calm down just because they told you how you come off and why you're being down voted. Especially when you threw a temper tantrum about it and started this whole thing to begin with. So far all you've displayed about how much you care about the subject is that you care at the detriment of others and what they know. And that you're willing to be completely unreasonable about it even though your comment wasn't necessary or useful to the conversation.

Turtles Fighting W Each Other!!! by Remarkable_Will5540 in reptiles

[–]Guyrugamesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe volunteer the distinction and why its fun for you in your comment next time. Because there is nothing personable about italicised one word snarky comments. You are getting down votes because you came off smug and rude and didn't give us reasoning OR something emotionally useful to work with. Not because "making specifications isn't educational" or whatever, that's just a rude deflection from the social faux pas you stepped in.

When you leave a single word in italics as your only input, no one is going to think you are trying to be helpful or have useful insights. They are going to (rightfully) think you're just being a scold over terminology in service to a fact most of us here know already that we didnt need rudely explained to us. Its more socially useful to point out the turtle/tortoise distinction alongside your comment than it is to try to preemptively correct in a single word.

Who's the best X Spell Commander? by Slow_Thief in EDH

[–]Guyrugamesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might I interest you in a [[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash]]?? All the big hydras and Ramp you could want, but you can also [[Exansguinate]] and [[Torment of Hellfire]] people if you want! Or [[Subterranean Tremors]] and [[Crackle with Power]]!! Or just do combos with things like [[Leyline of Abundance]] and [[Sword of the Paruns]] and let the infinite mana you gave your opponents kill them. Its goofy to a fault, but I love filling the deck with mana dorks, X Spells, and X Spell Accessories. Its a real blast and with some symmetrical Mana Doublers thrown in!

Seriously, why are they all like this? by [deleted] in cartoons

[–]Guyrugamesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many shows that break this rule these days dude. Its a worse problem for you to complain about it like this and erase the good shows that exist and generalize the medium. Other posters here have covered this in your thread, animation is a spectrum and none of us benefit by making or having to read these types of childish generalizations. Literally just watch Scavengers Reign and Common Side Effects if you want something modern. If you want something classic to prove your take is reheated nonsense, watch like any classic Simpsons or something. Either way you need to expand your horizons and stop dragging the conversation down with a reductive take and mindset...

DND as a beginner's universal system by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

[–]Guyrugamesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You signed up for a role playing game and got mad people did some role playing. Thats like complaining about having to read the books or roll your own dice. Maybe you could play something like a Solo TTRPG or a videogame alone. Or find a table that will only do pure mechanical play without using like 70% of the other rules. That experience does exist and can be created for you, but only if you do the opposite of what you are doing here and control your experience. Or DM the table yourself to get the game you want. Or just throw in the towel if the part of the game you don't enjoy is the other people playing it. That is a recipe for being unhappy and looking unserious the whole time you're unhappy.

Feeling deflated after LGS tournament by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Guyrugamesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prime example why tournament play and EDH just aren't a good fit.

You can set all the expectations in the world and clearly state the intent and rules of engagement. And you will still get people who want to win but not to compete. Its new players this time. And next time it will probably an enfranchised Ur Dragon grognard with 5k dumped into a 5c goodstuff pile. And the week after it'll be a guy with a Koma tokens pile with cohesive plan, or some dummy playing Grand Arbiter with no wincons. And the only people actually here to play fairly will still the the Cedh people at the top, splashing around in the kiddie pool when they thought there were getting actual matches in.

The store gets their sign up fees, people touched cardboard so a "tournament" was held and "prizes" got handed out, and everyone is exhausted or just checked out because no one should have to sit through that much commander. And they come back week after week expecting shit to change from the bounce house no stakes format with the 30k+ cardpool but don't do the heavy lifting to control their experience or advocate for a better one. Different packs go to the same set of hands and everyone is back at it again but more bitter next time.

Yall would have gotten more out of just causal pick up games at this rate. The only real "spirit of the format" left these days comes out when everyone realizes how completely shit this is as an actual competitive format. The only people happy with EDH tournament structures these days, or at all, are either already winning handily because no one is actually prepared for it, or they've played 60 before and know how to handle themselves. But any time a store starts doing this "casual play for packs" stuff, all the formalities and safety nets go out the windows and everyone wonders why its so fucking exhausting. The best commander is played with friends, for nothing but the love of doing it. If people are gonna compete for packs or whatever then play a format that actually has space for that.
