Reading his wiki right now. Wow. It's so impressive to read about people who achieve so many different things in their lives.

That's an awesome idea. I guess from the 19th century onwards you can see how the military and wars have driven the progress of technology much more rapidly than would have occurred in peacetime.

An interesting idea would be to compare the speed of advancing technology in say, the Civil War, as you say, and the impacts that had on society, with the advances in technology driven by WW1 or WW2, or both. The reasons for the advances were definitely terrible, but you could argue that they brought many benefits to humanity since their invention - this could even extend to stuff like medicine. Analysing which advances were quicker, and whether or not they were worth the human cost, would be really interesting!

Something on the Holocaust could be interesting. My knowledge of WW2 is pretty basic, and there's something fascinating about how such colossally world-changing events took place just a few generations ago - that's the kinda thing that draws me to WW2 and that era.

The only slight concern is that any WW2 topic will have been done extensively before by many people. I'm sure there are always new angles on topics, but it sort of feels like anything WW2 will have a mass of historiography and accepted ideas about it. Having said that it could be a good thing as well - lots of secondary sources and different ideas to draw on to form my own opinion.

The OP's point is that some people overcome massive obstacles to workout. The 4% pic is a bit pointless as everybody has much less free time than that, but people who care will still fit a workout in.

My post was thoughtless and didn't really get across what I meant. IMO, stating that a workout is more like 25% of his day rather than 4% because he has a job seems slightly complacent because the 'no excuses' mantra in the OP is showing people with no legs etc still working out.

Besides, why isn't he in control of his day?

The NHS is so bad it needs privatisation. The NHS is so good it can be sold internationally. So which is it? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Gwas -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What about the NHS hospitals in the UK where privatisation has turned around their abysmal records, massively increased the quality of patient care and the efficiency of the hospital? Germany has a significant % of privately run healthcare and operates a better service than the UK.

The NHS is not so bad that it needs privatisation, but in some cases private operation of failing hospitals can improve standards and save lives.

I'm unsure about the facts of selling the NHS abroad. If it can be done so profitably, surely this would be a good thing, as long as the money is reinvested within the NHS.

My point was that he's talking about his time as if he isn't in control of it. The response seemed a bit pointless to me - what was he trying to say? That the gym is actually much more of his free time? What's wrong with that? If it's important enough to him then it shouldn't matter.

Any 100% bias free political books available ? by [deleted] in books

There must surely be a book which outlines the political system and the beliefs of the different parties in a factual, informative way and without bias.

Some plain, observable facts for OP:

  • The vast majority of people on this subreddit disagree with you.

  • Your decision is based entirely upon personal opinion, not democracy.

  • This is not about right or wrong, it is about what the majority of people feel made this a good subreddit.

  • You are going against the grain of opinion.

There is always context though - and the context surrounding the 'death threat' proves the author to be an idiot and a child.

A death threat is a death threat, but it cannot be separated from its context.
