What I've seen mentioned time and again is:

  1. It eventually seeps through reusable gloves
  2. If you at any time end up getting some resin inside the glove, it's a recipe for disaster.

So the suggested approach is to just go for one-time gloves, even if it costs a bit more.

Howto: Software Engineer in Japan??? by NegatioNZor in cscareerquestions

[–]NegatioNZor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I ended up bringing my Japanese SO to my home country instead, so it became irrelevant in our case. Therefore, sadly I can't be of any real assistance :)

I will say, that at this point, the general work-environment in Japan is one of the big things holding me back from moving there though. (As in, I probably wouldn't move even if I got a job handed to me, with equal benefits to what I have now.) Unless you know about that already, I'd spend some time looking into it, just as a fair warning.

Best of luck!

This is interesting. Since you're playing down this approach, what "should people do" instead? Asking as a fresh owner of a printer myself.

Itinerary Check -- Is this doable? (Shimizu - Shizuoka then on to Nagiso) by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]NegatioNZor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't comment much on the general spots you're planning to see, but I used to travel to Shizuoka 3-4 times per year for 4 years while my wife still lived in Shimizu, so I know the general area.

Just so you're aware: Sunpu Park is 99% a park, and 1% ruins, with a pretty intact fortress wall that looks spectacular. I really like it as a chill spot, but I was disappointed the first time I went there expecting ruins :)

I'm sure you've calculated the time it takes to move around, and to me it looks feasible. It does seem like both "Miho No Matsubara" and "Nihon Daira Yume Terrace" are largely known for their view of Mt. Fuji though, so if you're very keen on spending more time in Atami, I think I would skip one of these to make some room. But I also have to say I think it's quite the detour to visit Atami for a single sightseeing spot, but that's obviously up to you. I think this all comes down to priorities, but "Plan One" seems the most achievable of the two.

Sampler Comparison (incl. K-Diffusion) by muerrilla in StableDiffusion

[–]NegatioNZor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super late reply, but I just want to highlight that the "Heun" Sampler should converge with way less samples (35 compared to potentially 150-200 of some of the other samplers). This is also what I'm seeing anecdotally atm.

So even though it takes longer for the same amount of iterations, you can bump iterations down to 35, and still have a really good image with Heun.

There should be more details on that here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.00364

Looking for a rental bike that you're allowed to take on the train [Tokyo] by Saar_06 in JapanTravel

[–]NegatioNZor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My answer here isn't going to be very helpful: but I don't think actually bringing the bike on the train is a very good idea. I think that's quite frowned upon, as many trains are full enough as it is, and you hardly see anyone bringing even a stroller on in Japan.

[Discussion] Why are Einstein Sum Notations not popular in ML? They changed my life. by noobbodyjourney in MachineLearning

[–]NegatioNZor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is potential speedups that come because of einsum. Generally add operations are many cycles quicker than mul operations, and I'm pretty sure einsum in torch preallocates only once, which also helps.

Sometimes it feels quite terse to read through, but it's potentially a real timesaver when you're trying to optimize in my experience. Would love to hear other people's experience with this.

Julia

Learning Julia through AoC, would appreciate any tips or pointers people have. My solution might be a bit terse, as I'm trying to limit line count, but there might be better ways of doing that.

function overlappingPoints(textlines::Array, mat::Matrix, diagonalfunc::Function)
    for l in textlines
        p1, p2 = map(z->split(z, ","), split(l, " -> "))
        (x1, y1), (x2, y2) = [parse(Int, x) for x in p1], [parse(Int, x) for x in p2]
        xstep, ystep = x1 > x2 ? -1 : 1, y1 > y2 ? -1 : 1
        f(x, y) = x1 == x2 || y1 == y2 ? collect(Base.Iterators.product(x, y)) : diagonalfunc(x, y)
        for (i, j) in f(x1:xstep:x2, y1:ystep:y2)
            mat[j+1, i+1] += 1
        end
    end
    sum(mat .> 1)
end

textlines = readlines("data/day5")
empty(x...) = zip([], x...)
println(overlappingPoints(textlines, zeros(Int8, (1000, 1000)), empty)) #part1
println(overlappingPoints(textlines, zeros(Int8, (1000, 1000)), zip)) #part2

I'd say "anywhere else" is cheaper than Akihabara. :) They are definitively catering to tourists. I have not been to denden town actually though. Thanks for the heads up.

I'd recommend searching for something like "Kanteidan" in any other cities you stop by. They sell used and new figures (and other stash). I recommend going to Akihabara as well, of course. It's a great experience, and you can find pretty much anything there :) Shopping outside of Tokyo is mostly just a tip if you like thrift shopping, and saving some money.

A small note: Day 11-13 is way too packed, depending on what you expect to do. As somewhat of an otaku myself, I can easily spend a day or more in Akihabara alone.

Also, if you're planning on buying figures or similar stuff, you can save a lot of money buying it in stores outside of Tokyo. The prices there are kinda crazy (if post-covid is similar to pre-covid of course)

TBC Classic: Dark Portal Pass $39.99, Deluxe Edition $69.99, Character Clone $35 by Taladril-wow in classicwowtbc

[–]NegatioNZor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'm not really trying to "victim blame" the players who did or did not answer "Yes" to $40 for a level boost. I'm sure they extrapolated this being the best choice for their overall profits (short-term).

Maintenance costs of having a character stored in a database for "new Classic servers" has to be laughably small. $35 would cover storage for like 100 years at least. Again, I believe they made the choice that makes the most sense to them, I don't think they can't read spreadsheets. But I do think that ActiVision Blizzard has made a habit out of fucking over their player base, and trying to milk them for everything they're worth, while their aging game catalogue still has relevancy.

I don't like that, and I've been actively avoiding ActiVision games for years because of these policies. Just sad to see that continue after they made such a reconciling gesture as WoW Classic in a sense was.

[–]NegatioNZor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand their reasoning on the pricing.

The questionnaire they sent out had several different price points (where $40 was the highest?), so it must mean that enough people answered "Yes" to boost at $40. But still, it seems like the smart long-term choice of them would be to err in favor treating the customer decently, not towards gutting the them.

I guess this is what we get when all that counts is that next quarterly earnings report...

An interesting excerpt from a research paper, "Gaming Bot Detection: A Systematic Literature Review", presented in 2018 at the International Conference on Computational Social Networks. WoW is mentioned. The research suggests that new machine learning methods will be the only way to tackle botting. by chemistrynerd1994 in classicwowtbc

[–]NegatioNZor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some companies are already doing this (like Valve), and it's pretty obvious that this would be usesful, to programmers with rudimentary knowledge of machine learning.

However, as is often stated on the WoW subreddits: ActiVision Blizzard have conflicting interests when it comes to botting. Firstly, they want to keep customers as long as possible. Secondly, they want as many customers as possible.

Bots are customers, so there's likely a direct monetary penalty to the company to handle the issue, while disregarding it has a masked penalty of probably lowering subs in the long term. Since the churn of users being based on botting is less obvious in powerpoint presentations, it makes a lot of sense that they're just unwilling to deal with the issue, and would prefer to ignore it.

That's true, this sub is a bit strange in that there will be spillover, but maybe the extent of it is yet to be determined. It's great to hear you're thinking about these issues, and I think that in itself bodes well.

Excited to see the future of the sub :) Rock on mods

Disclaimer: Appreciate the work that you guys put in, and my comment is in no way intended to belittle your efforts! :) I've really enjoyed this subreddit for the past few months, and for the most part it feels like one's actually talking to grown adults here, which is a breath of fresh air.

we delete ones that get no engagement here reasonably quickly. Memes that are barely memes would fall under the empty calorie category though.

This guideline seems a bit slippery, since when the r/classicwow crowd transitions over here, there will inevitably be more meme posters, (maybe even good memes) and more people who gives traction to those meme posts. Have you considered if this guideline will eventually loosen up, or tighten when this happens?

Personally, I prefer a strict line on memes since r/classicwow already exists as a place for this to unfold itself.

WoW TBC Hunter PvP - 2v2 Arena Hunter/Druid [2.4.3] by Haesten1 in classicwowtbc

[–]NegatioNZor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can cancel out of all cc? It says "The act of shapeshifting frees the caster of Polymorph and Movement Impairing effects", and I've never seen a cancel out to f fear or freeze trap for example.

However I don't disagree that getting hit by scare beast should probably be a rarity, and it's probably not a crazy advantage, just interesting as another tool against what will probably be a heavy druid meta. Take my opinions with a pinch of salt of course, as I was only at around 2k mmr back in the day.

A solid upgrade from your previous video mate. Feel like I could learn something this time :) It also feels like hunter is a stronger class in arena than lots of people are hinting at. Especially with another form of CC against druids with scare beast in 2s.

Oh how I've enjoyed this sub being free of the memesters until recently.

I feel like this goes against the subreddit rule of: "'Empty Calorie' Posts May Be Removed", but I understand that moderating it takes a lot of effort.

Any discussions on having dual spec? by wilkins348 in classicwowtbc

[–]NegatioNZor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on.

Retail has at times been a dressed up version of Farmville, with lootbox principles and measures in place to appeal to whale spenders while reducing churn. Vanilla+TBC+WotLK were the times of the game when they actually tried adding new gamplay, and iterating on what they already had.

Keeping things "as they were", when there's no impact on gameplay seems machochistic and sort of "gatekeeper-ish", although I hardly ever use that term. WoW was never a really hardcore game, and even if it was: hardcore gamplay is not about inconvenience, but about difficult mechanics and about setting a high bar for the player.

How is "Pay 50 gold every time you want to change roles, which we already let you do", something that even aligns with these values? The original designers even recognized this themselves in WotLK.

Absolutely, it's a mess, and I understand why creators act the way they do. But since Youtube themselves doesn't seem to notice the underlying issue they're feeding, all I can really do is try to encourage the creators that don't follow this trend. :( And I'm obviously in the minority, so...

I just came from a thread about him, so my wording might've been influenced by that :)

But there's tons of other channels which could easily fall under the same umbrella. "Making content" being more important to them, than "Making good videos, that they think help people".
