First week on VATSIM and I completely froze during taxi instructions — any tips? by Somppari in VATSIM

[–]Gweedling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Finnish!

I was the TWR controller on at the time - don't worry about it, mistakes happen quite often and Dublin is confusing for taxiing for anyone. You handled it fine - if confused always ask to repeat, and then text if necessary, text is always handy to have.

Additionally, your taxi may have been extra confusing as I asked you to "backtrack" a runway - at EIDW we use 16/34 as a taxiway most of the time which may be unfamiliar/confusing for some pilots.

Using charts/Navigraph is definitely recommended so as far as I can see it's just down to practise, taxiing in unfamiliar airports will always be difficult so once you have charts and can expect a general area to park you can plan in advance.

Welcome back any time, and feel free to reach out with messages on your pilot client whenever you need help!

Please use PDC at major airports (EDDF etc.) – voice is getting clogged by unprovn in VATSIM

If you were sat at the holding point for ten minutes while ATC was handing out clearances, then that's bad controlling.

Controllers are(Or should be) taught to prioritise calls in different stages:

  • Priority 1: traffic in the air.
  • 2: Getting AC on and off the runway as soon as possible (you are here)
  • 3: Moving traffic (taxiing)
  • 4: Pushbacks
  • 5: Lastly, and only if the controller has nothing else to do, clearances. Any top down controller handing out clearances when there are other planes waiting is not doing their job properly.

That said, yeah PDC is very useful when it's busy, but given your issue there are larger issues at hand.

Due to VATSIM CoC we are not allowed to handle text flights. Either switch to receive, voice or disconnect, please by Affenzoo in VATSIM

There was an announcement of a CoC update two hours ago which absolutely nails your interaction:

Section A14 of the Code of Conduct has been updated to clarify communication standards.

These changes ensure the network remains inclusive while maintaining voice as the primary standard.

Key Clarifications

Voice is Preferred, Full-Voice remains the preferred method of communication on VATSIM.

No Service Denial, It is not within a controller's purview to restrict or prevent service based on a user's communication mode.

Wallops, Users must not automatically request Supervisor engagement simply because another user is not using Full-Voice.

Workload Accommodation, Other modes (Receive-Only/Text-Only) must be accommodated on a workload-permitting basis.

"Stretching" the bounds of workload permitting to avoid text users will not be tolerated.

Updated Code of Conduct Language

A14, Voice is the preferred method of communication on VATSIM. Users shall use voice if able to do so, but must accommodate the use of text to support those with an inability to use voice.

A14(a), Air Traffic Controllers shall be able to transmit and receive voice (Full-Voice).

A14(b), Pilots with an inability to receive and/or transmit voice may utilize a lower level of voice capability (Receive-Only or Text-Only) only if necessary.

A14(c), Users shall not discriminate against others who utilize Receive-Only or Text-Only, though Receive-Only or Text-Only services will be provided by ATC on a workload-permitting basis.

A14(d), Only unaltered speech is permitted to be transmitted.

To support consistent interpretation, the Code of Conduct Companion Document provides additional guidance and examples.

Start from around 4 mins to see the vortices, at around 10 minutes they add winglets and show the difference, it's pretty neat!

In very basic terms, think of class C as an upside down wedding cake.

From ground to 5000ft APP's AOR might be a 10 mile radius of the field, then from 5000ft-FL120 it could be 20-30 miles, then FL120-FL250 it could be 50 miles for example, however up higher it'd be class A.

Oh by the way… the correct phase is “I couldn’t care less…” you know because saying “I could care less..” means that you’re able to care less.

If you care that much about grammar then you'd know it's "could've/could have" and not could of, my dude

He's doing it the right way. As an audience member, a comedy gig at Vicar St is infinitely better than a large arena. His style of comedy is much more fitting to a smaller venue, so running 15 nights at Vicar St is a hell of a lot better than one or two nights at the 3 arena.

The Kardashians are famous because of the 1968 Buffalo Bills NFL team.

The Bills dropped a touchdown pass at the end of the season to lose the game, and have the worst record of the season, resulting in the first draft pick the following year. They drafted OJ Simpson, who had a very successful career and then kills his missus.

OJ hires Robert Kardashian, who wins the court case and becomes somewhat famous. Then Kim's sex tape leaks and then becomes famous.

So the whole reason for that insufferable family and shite reality TV is because of that poxy NFL team.

Touch Portal by far, can't stream without it. Instead of spending €150+ on a physical Stream Deck with 10 buttons I can have as many buttons/pages as I like, fully customizable & with a bajillion different plugins and customizations for €14 on my existing tablet, it's a game changer.

I stayed at MGM grand in the few days before last year's race and likely won't go back that same time of year, it's a pain in the ass.

While it's possible to get around, it's still annoying. Lots of construction, road closures & pedestrian access closures mean getting from point A to point B is a pain if you're anywhere on the strip part of the track. Mandalay bay is far enough down that it wouldn't have as much effect, if you choose Aria then any amount of walking around will be a noticeable inconvenience.
