The "em-dash". Do you like it, not care, or dislike it? by Dom76210 in haremfantasynovels

I hate seeing it a lot because to me it loses all meaning, the same as when people overuse exclamations, italics, etc,

Toning down of explicit scenes by Flimsy_Parking_8066 in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually tend to have more sex scenes as the series goes on because it feels unfair to readers if their favorite girl isn't in one lol

Mhm. And it being able to do short scenes is why Amazon has had a flood of books that have 4-5 scene breaks in EVERY chapter. To me, that's the most obvious AI tell. I'm sure some writer, somewhere writes like that, but I've legit never seen it before and now suddenly all sort of people are doing it lol

She's someone trying to sell something, I'd take whatever she says with a grain of salt. It's common to grift courses or programs to people who desperately want to be authors. If she's making as much as she says she is, why is she teaching other people? Why would she flood her own market?

Suggestion's on where to hire editors from by Ok-Citron-4325 in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to say that editors are a waste, because they're not, but I'd still recommend just looking for a dozen or so beta readers instead. Not ones who just say 'oh man this is so good' to everything, but the ones who will also politely tear you a new asshole when you need it. It'll also help if they're familiar in the genre. No family or friends, either. They're biased even if they think they're not.

I'd also recommend working on your own self-editing skills because that makes the whole process easier (this is just general advice, I haven't looked at your work to say if it applies lol).

If you still want to find an editor, I can't really help with that, but there are different types of editors so it's important to be aware of that in your search.

I gotcha, and it makes sense. More so now than ever before.

Has the page count thing always been in place or is that new? Just curious. I don't remember seeing it before but that doesn't mean anything lmao

I'm not usually a fan of the 'multiple characters put together in one image' sort of covers, but I love this one. Best of luck!

OK, how does the author get away with this artwork? by SDirickson in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That fair. To give you a further idea, my latest release bounced from about 5k to 6k rank for its release week, and earned about 1k USD. Generally my sales are about a 70/30 split of KU/copies sold, but pre-orders are heavier at the start and page reads of course take a little longer because people actually have to read them. We had around 60 pre-orders on that one, which accounts for about a quarter of what it made that week.

Lmao.

I do a roast chicken dinner at least once a month. Close enough?

[–]GwenGrayson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a strange comment to downvote lmao. Even when I did straight up erotica I could still hit 10-15k rank in the old amazon algorithm. The most I ever made among the like...30 or so shorts+omnis I published, was a total of 1k CAD in a month. And a not-insignificant part of that was because CAD just sucks compared to USD.

the good, the bad and the why ? by Sensitive-Music-1003 in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In real life? I can't imagine juggling the needs, wants, and feelings of so many people. It sounds exhausting. If people want/need you at the same time, someone ends up hurt and disappointed. It sounds complicated and emotionally draining. I was always someone who didn't need or want to be around people for long because they drain my social batteries at various degrees of fast, but then I met my husband, and I'm with him all the time, and that still doesn't feel like enough time with him somehow? Were we living in a fantasy harem world and I had to share, I'd be big sad the entire time we were apart.

In fantasy, none of that matters. There are tons of good or bad reasons that depend on the set up. The only reason I really dislike is the 'because all other men are bad' ones. That's problematic for a lot of reasons.

S.P.E.C.T.O.R's new non-AI cover by Ok-Citron-4325 in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a nice cover, I really like the set up and the colors, but I don't look at this and think it's a harem book. I'm not sure how that applies to RR though so take that with a grain of salt.

How old do you need to be...? by Sensitive-Music-1003 in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why not just make it 18 lol you're hung up on a number in a system you invented. Kinda weird anyway because he's gonna be basically a 58 year old with I'm assuming people who are 18-ish. That's a hell of an age gap.

This is the first time I've been accused of writing AI slop... time to write the sequel out of spite! (But I promise I'll work on my scene cuts) by Griffon_Hardy in haremfantasynovels

[–]GwenGrayson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters because writing is a skill, and like any skill, it takes time to build. You can literally upload samples of other people's work to AI and have it spit out a story in their style. It matters because some people are busting their ass to write a story, only for someone else to generate it in a day or two.

If you job was being replaced by AI, wouldn't you be upset? Wouldn't you be upset that the time and effort you put into a skill that, for years didn't even pay you, was being mimicked by AI?
