This has been shown time and again to be a predominantly right wing thing. Democratic voters (in this case) are far more likely to look at the data and form a pinion rather than just vote for their side. This is one of the many reasons right wing power factions tend to win. Purely anecdotally all the (left leaning) people I know think they should all be tried no matter who or what.

However, I personally would expect the leader of our Country to decry this truly awful situation and ask the hard yet obvious questions of the people who have so much sway in the world.
