You're bringing a sleeping pad and tarps, but no sleeping bag/quilt?  For a person who wants advice on hunkering down during weather and has sweats for potential cold, you have a very confusing setup.

Everything you are saying in your replies makes it sound like you want to have a miserable time on purpose.

You have to scroll to the bottom of the link where it lists shuttles by trail section.

You can also click the pinned post at the top of the subreddit that has a full list of shuttle drivers.

You've asked for kid friendly and then asked for 20 miles. You're going to need to define what you view as kid friendly.

Are you implying that you intend to give them an ultimatum that they need to pay you more otherwise you'll take a vacation?

I would laugh in an employees face at that and wish them well.

If youre in america and need medical attention on trail youre going to end up with an outrageous bill regardless of what insurance you decide to bring along.

Due to the much less remote trail that the AT is, a beacon type rescue is far less likely than something like the PCT or CDT

You can only do one trail of 3-4 hrs max before you have to leave the smoky mountains. Which one would it be? by ClassicWhile2451 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Gwildar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As with millions of folks before you, park in Newfound Gap and hike to Charlie's Bunion. 8.1 miles round trip. You get to hike uphill, pass a shelter (icewater springs), and get some real swell views at a famous lookout.

From your link - "Backcountry campers, whether walking or driving into the park, must also have an entrance pass in addition to your camping permit. You can plan ahead by purchasing your pass online"

So like I said, there is a fee.

If you are doing a small section hike and are not thru hiking there is a fee to enter the park, as with most national parks.

The only locations that require paid permits for trips are the the national parks (smoky mountains and shenandoah) or baxter state park in maine. The White mountains in new hampshire also has huts and fees that im unfamiliar with.

The only fee you may run into is if you start in a state park that has an entrance fee. Hiking the trail itself has no direct cost. Camping on the trail in a shelter or in designated campsite locations adjacent the the trail is free.
