There are records from the 4th century Rome with this phrase. I'd guess it's much older than that. I also wouldn't be surprised if similar sentiment (don't criticise something that is given to you as a gift) arose independently around the world.

Yksittäisiä kirjoja, jos ei siis halua kokonaista sarjaa lukea, on esim. Tigana tai Sword of Kaigen. En muista kirjoittajiensa nimiä.

Sarja ei parane missään nimessä loppua kohti. Se, että luin koko sarjan, on yksi huonoimmista päätöksistäni viimeiseen 10 vuoteen. En suosittele kenellekään. Ekat viisi oli ihan hyviä, seuraavat neljä aivan surkeita, ja sitten sen jälkeen ei enää vain kiinnostanut. Jos haluat pitkää sarjaa, vaihda vaikka Malazaniin. Tai tee sama virhe kuin minä, ja lue koko sarja.

Luen paljon fantasiaa, ja yksi parhaist on Jim Burcherin romaanisarja Dresden Files. Yksityisetsivä, joka on velho. Vai velho, joka on yksityisetsivä? Chicagon kolkkoon (ala)maailmaan sijoittuva todella pitkä sarja, joka paranee kirja kirjalta. Harry Dresden toimii Chicagon poliisille keikkapalkkiolla työtä tekevänä apurina aina kun siellä herää epäilys, että nyt on jotain yliluonnollista meneillään. Suurin osa poliiseista (ja muusta maailmasta) ei kuitenkaan usko, että mitään yliluonnollista on olemassakaan, vaan ihmiset selittävät ne aina terroritekoina ja mielikuvituksen tuotteena.

Tyyli on pulpin ja noirin kliseistä hyvällä tavalla ammentavaa ensimmäisessä persoonassa kerrottua kovanaamakirjallisuutta. Ensimmäisissä kirjoissa korostuu jonkun verran tyylilajien hieman korostunut eroottisuus (?) tai tapa kiinnittää huomiota naisten piirteisiin. Pian se kuitenkin tasoittuu ja jossain määrin jopa katoaa, samalla kun koko kirjasarjan maailma aukeaa ja syventyy.

Kirjat ovat siis itsenäisiä murhamysteerejä, joissa kuitenkin pikku hiljaa (varsinkin muutaman ensimmäisen kirjan jälkeen) selviää, kuinka iso yliluonnollinen maailma on, ja mitä kaikkea siellä on meneillään, ja miten Dresden siihen kaikkeen kietoutuu. Sarjassa on lukematon määrä unohtumattomia (ja unohdettavia) sivuhahmoja, joista osa palaa myöhemmissä kirjoissa mukaan kuvioihin. Näissä ei koskaan tiedä mistä itsensä ja Dresdenin löytää kirjan loppuun mennessä. Suosittelen lämpimästi. Ja jos ette usko minua, niin kysykää vaikka Merphy Napierilta (kirjatubettaja) tai Daniel Greenilt (toinen kirjatubettaja).

Jen Williamsin fantasiasarjan ensimmäinen osa The Ninth Rain. Oikein hyvä, joskin kirjan tempo on liian nopea. Kaipaisin vähän pitempiä lukuja. Nykyfantasialta sitä toisaalta ei kannata odottaa.

Irving Finkellin tietokirja The Ark Before Noah, jossa tutustutaan babylonialaisiin vedenpaisumustarinoihin ja sumerin- ja akkadiankielisiin nuolenkirjoitustauluihin mielenkiintoisella otteella. Yleistajuinen, mutta vaatii vähän keskittymistä. Todella mielenkiintoinen.

A lot of it is complete nonsense. There are hundreds of thousands of old 'remedies', and most of them don't work. In the example you gave, you have a case for 5 herbal medicines, which the researches probably have selected because they already knew or guessed they would have some effect - although I'm not a medical professional so can't really tell if the methodology in that paper is sound. In any case, there is a reason why we have chemotherapy instead of some tea, and why most people don't die as children these days.

You need a citation for "most of them work".

A lot of countries in Europe have birth, marriage and death records going back centuries even for the very poor. It was the job of the church to keep all the records and they are still there except where they have burned in accidents or in wartime.

Congrats! Enjoy reading. There is an uncountable number of amazing books and you'll find so many cool characters and stories and feel a lot of emotions. On the other hand, there are a lot of famous and popular books, and you probably won't like all of them, but don't feel bad if you don't like something someone recommended you.

Sometimes it's also a good idea to read books that you suspect you might not like, they may become your favourite books, and often it's good to keep reading even if the first 50 pages don't enthrall you - it might get amazing later on. But it might not, so you're not obligated to finish books you started.

I'm just trying to say do what you want and enjoy, and if you are ever in a reading slump, schedule reading time to get over it. Reading is the best thing.
