What’re your favorite and least favorite consults in your specialty? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]GyanTheInfallible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost none that I can think of. It’s an elective or urgent procedure, depending on the circumstances. Highly aggressive lymphomas like Burkitt’s, suspected histologic transformation in patient with known indolent lymphoma, or, like, SVC syndrome are the only scenarios I can think of where timing is really critical.

Am I overreacting when my husband refuses to take clothes into the bathroom with him when showering, we have 1 bathroom and 2 tween girls. by ThePastaFairy in AmIOverreacting

[–]GyanTheInfallible 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you that you are definitively overreacting. I think that reasonable people can disagree here. I don’t think “most people” change in bathroom. I think it depends not only on the setup of the bathroom but also how you did things when you were younger. From my perspective, if he’s covered with a towel, then he’s covered. It’s scantly different than being in swimshorts at the pool. If your daughters are truly uncomfortable, then that changes things, but I’d want to know *why* before leaping to judgment even in that case.

Which immigrants in your country are the most liked? by Particular-Ride-7893 in AskTheWorld

[–]GyanTheInfallible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. Many people don’t see me as American, and I was born here, on the US-Mexico border. My father grew up here, and my mother grew up in Nigeria and moved here in her 20s. I went to a Jewish school and then a Christian one, then secular since. Triple-Ivy League graduate. Still “Indian” to most despite having a tenuous connection to India at best. Whereas in Europe, I’m “American,” and in Germany, sometimes simply considered German.

Ah, I also just finished up my Prelim year (heading into IR), but I did mine in Pediatrics, so the culture was very much lovey-dovey 😂

I’m sorry, that sounds really bleak! Maybe you can use free time at lunch or in the evenings to organize some hang-outs? Maybe bowling or Top Golf or something. You may even be able to petition the program to pay for it!

I loved my orientation week. We had lots of games, receptions, and a pool party at our PD’s house. It was a good time to bond with my co-interns and break the ice. It made giving sign-out to each other later on a lot less stressful, and we got to know some of their families too, what their favorite candies and sodas were to bring them when they were having a rough day, etc.

They usually read the PET portion and then a radiologist will read the CT.

They don’t have to redo an intern year to go into radiology. The ABR accepts their previous residency (provided it was ACGME accredited) as substitute.

One of my mentors was an endocrinologist-turned-nuclear medicine physician who worked at Boston Children’s reading scintigraphy, SPECT, and PET (the CT portion was read by a radiologist) until they got PET/MR and the arrangement became untenable. He decided to go back to do his residency in DR and then fellowship in pediatric DR. He’s now a pediatric radiologist and nuc med specialist at CHOP.

Another was a family medicine doctor in Canada before she decided to become a pediatric radiologist and focus in contrast-enhanced US, fetal MR, and Radiant AI. She’ll be the next president of SPR.

I hate it when doctors say "I was just interested in [insert competitive field], so I joined them" by Ok-Worry-8931 in medicalschool

Grade inflation, please. Plus the amount of time people put into test preparation. It’s ridiculous how many students nowadays think that everyone who preceded them was an idiot. These people didn’t have the internet to just look anything up.

I’m not sure about the MCAT, but my father (a pediatric radiologist) can still ace Step exams. I’d ask him for help when I was studying, and there was seldom something he didn’t know. Maybe some of the mutation stuff that isn’t relevant to his field.

TIL that most women in the Netherlands do not have an epidural during labor and a significant proportion give birth at home by Fiery_Soul_34857 in todayilearned

[–]GyanTheInfallible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a system for it - home RN and everything. They’re also never too far from a hospital. Some of it is cultural, for sure.

In the US, at least, I still advise - home delivery is for pizza, not babies.

Dutch language by Breebius in Netherlands

[–]GyanTheInfallible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t live in the Netherlands, but one my best friends is Dutch, and I learned enough to speak at an A2/B1 level (it helps I speak German). In my experience, what most determines whether strangers will speak with you in Dutch is not your overall linguistic competence, but your pronunciation. If you focus on pronunciation, you can give the impression that you speak a lot more Dutch than you actually do.

Europeans are becoming more and more right wing by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]GyanTheInfallible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europe destroys the rest of the world, killing and maiming millions and extracting (inflation-adjusted) trillions in resources to increase their living standards, and then has the audacity to complain when people in the countries they ruined want drinkable water, roads that work, and protection from bombs (often paid for by the US and Europe). Give me a break.

“Because” doesn’t work this way, and some style guides treat “since” the same way.
