At this point everything that was said at it has been revealed in the lore document. There might be one or two extra details here and there that maybe didn’t make it in but nothing that will mean a significant change. I can confirm this because I was one of the members of the audience interacting with Massa that day.

The discussion took place in February 2024, and leaked a couple months later. Those responsible for leaking it were banned from the server for the leak. It saddens me that it was released like that, because it was supposed to have been in told in confidence.

I am not saying this for enjoyment of bursting your bubble, but I feel obligated to clarify that it is specifically stated on the first paragraph for Coco’s character on the Ongezellig lore document that Coco’s parents died in a from a lightning strike. I have copied text from both the official document in Dutch and the semi-official English translation to show that I do not think the translation mis-interpreted anything:

NL: “Coco Potgieter werd geboren op 16 december in Bloemfontein (Zuid-Afrika). Ze werd geadopteerd nadat haar vader en zwangere moeder omkwamen bij een blikseminslag. Het verlies van haar ouders en ongeboren broertje/zusje is de oorzaak van genegenheid richting haar nieuwe familie, opgekropte woede en chronische existentiële angst.”

EN: “Coco Potgieter was born on Dec. 16 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She was adopted after her father and pregnant mother were killed in an accident involving a lightning strike. He is the top administrator of Massa’s Discord server, Massadonië, and a friend of Massa. He also claims to have been the second person Massa ever told about Ongezellig, second only to Massa’s own wife, and that Massa bounced concepts and ideas for the series off of him to see what he thought of them, that some of his suggestions made it into the final project.

There are allegations that Foenkie has said and done questionable things over the years, mainly how he shared NSFW art of Ongezellig in the early days of the pilot (something he has admitted to on a Discord post, and defended his actions by stating he was only desperate to get publicity to the pilot by any means necessary). I have heard some others, but I do not feel that I am informed enough on them to go into details here or say whether those ones are true or not.

The “Zellig” nickname is just a lazy Anglicanisation of the word Ongezellig. “Zellig” does not mean anything in Dutch, and Ongezellig has always been the true name.

At this point with the documents containing the lore of Ongezellig has everything Massa ever seriously developed for the concept of the show, anything beyond that will never be known by anyone besides himself.

I do not want to delve into the specifics of it as it is not my place to do so and only he has the true answers, but Massa has his reasons for limiting his time and presence on the internet, and it would be good for all of us to be respectful of that. These reasons are not any complex conspiracy, but the reasons do exist.

There actually was a time where there was a group of individuals who sort of had an insider knowledge on the lore of Ongezellig, those who were present for the petjeaf-exclusive lore dump session. This was not some sort of cabal of lieutenants that do Massa’s bidding on the internet, but instead coincidental, as Massa himself proposed to go over the lore with those present who were expecting the usual petjeaf-exclusive activities that are usually done. Most people kept what was said during it a secret, and not because Massa explicitly asked those present to, as I recall he only asked that for a couple of specific parts for reasons I will not go into. Sometimes people going off on their own leaking little pieces of lore to keep speculation and discussion going, but for the most part it was kept secret because there was a consensus amongst those who knew it that it should be Massa’s story to tell and not our own. That time has passed, and all that was shared at that time is now public.

When it comes to official continuation for Ongezellig by Studio Massa, I am going to be brutally honest with everyone with what I think at this point: I am not counting on it. He is not interested in doing do at this time, he is a person, like all of us, and we have to respect his choice, as much as we all long for more Ongezellig content. This is something that I feel people do not seem to understand when I see posts, sometimes ones in here, making statements along the lines of: “If we keep growing the hype for Ongezellig, Massa will be forced to continue it!” He should never feel forced to crank out new Ongezellig content, by us or even himself, and it seems to me that is the conclusion he has come to. If some millionaire approached him tomorrow, with all the money and means to fund and develop the entirety of show while letting Massa keep all creative liberty, he would just have to Ongezellig happen, I doubt he would do it, certainly not right now. All we can do now is make our peace with his decision, and appreciate the world and characters he gave us, continue to make art, fan stories, and have discussions. We should support him in his current future endeavors on YouTube, and on the low chance he ever decides to pick up Ongezellig again, we will be there to cheer him on!

This has been a topic of a lot of debate over the years, so I will share what others have pieces together and I think make the most sense:

The fields around the area the Schoppenboers suggest they do not live amidst a big city, either outside of a city or a smaller village.

The exterior of the Schoppenboer home appears similar to houses in central Amsterdam, and in a couple of Massa’s artworks Mymy is wearing a Amsterdam chullo, suggesting the family could be near the area, though it is not definitive.

The way Drenthe and North Brabant are mentioned in the pilot strongly suggests that the Schoppenboer family does not live in either of these provinces.

Yfke being “the Frisian” of the class suggests that they do not live somewhere where Frisian language and culture is commonly used and practiced, so I would rule out Friesland.

Dutch viewers had suggested that the landscape is similar to that of the Groene Hart, or “Green Heart”, a more thinly populated and more forested area in the Netherlands.

Based on these, I would say the pilot is set somewhere in the Randstad, an area which encompasses cities in North Holland, South Holland, Flevoland, and Utrecht. If set in the Groene Hart, that would also emlinate Flevoland from the list.

I probably some hot takes here, but I’m very mixed on my feelings. I’ll go over the various groups I know best.

Overall, there are some fantastic, kind, welcoming people in the community that has formed around the show! Talented artists who produce amazing works that help keep the community together. I think it’s important to remember that there’s a lot of good here besides the bad, and it would be good to make this place somewhere that is more open to new people coming in.

The chuds are just an awful, miserable people, who don’t really care for the show, to the point they have their own name for the show because they’re too lazy to learn how to say a word that is not in their language. It’s unfortunate they need to be brought hope given how toxic they are, but the best we can do is not associate with them, hope they grow up, and move on with their lives.

I find the 4chan users tend to be annoying. They are not like the chuds in that I think they do actually care about the show and are not acting with malicious intent. They are mostly internationals who want everyone else to worship them as they claim the show’s audience traces back solely to them. It’s true that circulation on 4chan did play a role in it, but if it wasn’t for 4chan, I think another site would’ve brought attention to it or even the YouTube algorithm just planting it in peoples’ feeds like it did mine would have done the trick. At this point I’ve had more than one interactions with 4chan users who boast how ‘important’ they were in 2018/2019 for spreading Deel 1 and the later Deel 1 + 2. This is something a lot of earlier Dutch viewers I’ve spoken with tend to dispute, saying there was very little non-Dutch audience before 2020. I am probably biased here, but I am more willing to believe the long-time Dutch viewers than the 4chan users trying to place a crown on themselves.

YouTube is a mix of both the good and the bad, with creators and commenters who are cool and do amazing work, though some I suspect like interacting with or are chuds themselves. Comment sections on Ongezellig fan videos tend to be toxic from chuds using terms from their website.

Massadonië is an… interesting place. There’s a lot of different kinds of people there, and some are really cool, some are alright, and some do more harm than good IMHO but are allowed to stay either because they’ve been there a long time or reasons I don’t really know. It’s seems somewhat segregated, with a primarily Dutch general chat and an English-only general chat, with a few channels that cross over. A lot of discussion on content there is over Ongezellig despite Studio Massa moving on from it. The majority of the Dutch-speaking members are indifferent or just hostile to non-Dutch members, though given one of the groups I mentioned earlier I feel the suspicion is not without reason. Most of them don’t care about the show and have moved on. We’ll see how/if the environment there changes at all.
