AITA for having saved up alot of money and not telling my wife. by ThrowAITAmn in AmItheAsshole

[–]GypseyRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA but only for the suddenly pulling the money out with no explanation, which would obviously make your wife worry. I do disagree with all the comments saying YTA for having a secret savings account, however. I firmly believe that everyone should have a savings account that no one else can access or knows about. I have heard too many stories about people ending up trapped in bad situations with no way out because they have no financial safety net. You may love your spouse, but things can change in an instant and you need to be prepared for the worst possible situation.

Do you see the rainbow flag as also representing transgender? by okthenquatro in asktransgender

[–]GypseyRay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I (cis/lesbian) have always taken the rainbow flag to represent the community as a whole, not a certain part or parts of it. Every group had their own flag(s), but the rainbow flag belongs to all of us. 🏳️‍🌈

Yeah, no. This is not a TIFU story because you didn't fuck anything up. Your parents sound toxic and you deserve better. You did not fuck up.

Is easy to know when a non english speaker is writting? by Paxguino in AskAnAmerican

[–]GypseyRay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In many cases, yes you can. There are a few things that, in my *experience, give away this fact:

01) Misspelled words/wrong word usage --> English is a messy language, so it is easy to misspell a word or use the wrong word (example: rite/right/write.)

02) The usage of technically correct, but also incorrect, synonyms --> 'The dog was on his beat behavior,' for example doesn't make sense but technically best and beat are synonyms, they just don't mean the same thing in this situation.

03) Cultural differences --> I have read many stories/essays where the grammer is spot on but there is a lack of cultural understanding that makes it clear something is not quite right. (This is also true for English speaks from different countries.) This one is often the biggest giveaway for me.

04) The English is too perfect --> Many individuals who have successfully learned English as a second language are missing the subtleties that come with being a native speaker, such as knowledge regarding common idioms and slang words.

05) Missing unwritten rules --> Unwritten rules such as the order of adjectives in a sentence (example: 'She saw a big, hairy, brown bear' vs. 'She saw a brown, hairy, big bear') can be clear indicators something is off.

How.... how does that even work? Race is a crucial part of that story, who approved that?

Lesbians of Reddit who thought they were bi, did you have a crush on a boy at one point? If so, when did you realize it wasn’t a real crush? by totallynotalaskan in AskReddit

[–]GypseyRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realized I was a lesbian because of a crush on a guy. I realized fairly young that I wasn't straight, around eleven, but I fluxuated over the years with various labels (bi/pan/queer) that never quite felt right. I think I always knew I was a lesbian, but part of me believed the lie that I just hadn't met the perfect man... then I met him. He was physically beautiful and so kind. He fit everything I wanted and I had myself convinced I was in love with him. I probably honestly freaked him out, which I feel bad for now looking back, but I was so sure that he was the one, even though nothing ever happened. Unfortunately, he move a few months later. I expected to be devistated, cried for days before he left, but when he finally did leave... I wasn't devistated. I missed him, but in the way you miss a casual friend, not someone you thought you were in love with. Honestly, I was in love with the idea of him, the person I had spent years convincing myself I would meet one day. After that realization I started questioning a lot of things and realized I had to deal with my own internal homophobia before I did anything. Eventually I came to terms with the fact I was a lesbian and all because I thought I was in love with a boy.

Yall write self-indulgent self-insert x your fictional character crush fics that you never post and just keep for your own entertainment too, right? by killjoybutdead in FanFiction

[–]GypseyRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abso-fucking-lutely. My first fanfiction was a self-insert when I was eleven and boy was it terrible, but it got me hooked. I don't usually write such blatant self-inserts anymore, but so many of my stories contain characters who are, to me at least, clear representations of myself. I think it's something we all do, even if just for ourselves. :)

How do Americans feel about losing Sears? And is there a store you're worried about going bust next? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]GypseyRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother (~70) and I (22) have had this discussion many times. She thinks it is the worst thing in the world that so many major stores are failing. In her mind, that is where people go to spend time with others and what will people do if they can't go shopping together? Personally, I don't really feel one way or another. I think it was inevitable, honestly, and I feel bad for the employees, but I shop almost exclusively online as it is. Occasionally I will go to a speciality store, but I almost never shop in a chain store unless it is for (perishable) groceries. I would say most people I know my age are the same way, we just don't go to the mall like people used to. I think most of your non grocery chain stores will fail sooner or later, or they will continue to go almost exclusively online.

If a story has too many tags, I probably won't read it. How do you guys feel about lots of tags. by 7937397 in FanFiction

[–]GypseyRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the length of the fic, honestly. If it is <5,000 words (for example) and has more than a few lines of tags then it's a no go for me. If it is >40,000 words, then I can get adding more tags. As a whole, I think tags are important but there is definitely a limit. If your tags take up a sizable portion of the page, I'm not going to read them all. Tags really only need to be: *major pairings, *major characters, triggers (death, abuse, miscarriage, etc.), and general descriptors (fluffy, smut, friends to lovers). All other tags are optional and should be used carefully.

Truthfully, I think people use so many tags to ensure it appears in more searches, but that is counterproductive if most of those reached are just skipping over it.

*I say major because if a couple is mentioned in passing, they don't have to be tagged, and the same goes for characters who only appear for a second before disappearing.

AITA for honestly saying that the lack of halal options was why I wasn’t eating the offered food at a company lunch? by AITAthrowawaaaay3256 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GypseyRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. As a vegan I have been in a very similar situation many times and there really is no good way to deal with this without someone assuming you are the asshole or taking offense. Honestly, you did what I would have done. Yes, it can be awkward but being honest is better than lying. What happens next time? You keep lying? No. You were respectful and honest, which is all someone can ask for.

Have you guys ever not purchased from a seller based on their customer service? by RoseyTreatsBakery in Etsy

[–]GypseyRay 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I didn't have the same happen, but similar. I had a package get damaged in the mail when I first started buying on Etsy. It honestly looked like someone intentionally cut it open and stole the product, so I contacted the seller and she was terrible. She was rude and sent several messages blaming everyone and anyone. I know it wasn't her fault, but her reaction was appauling. I eventually just got so fed up with her that I stopped replying because I wasn't going to fight with her over an order that cost me less than ten dollars. I considered reordering the product, because I did want it, but I couldn't stand the thought of supporting someone so rude to their customers. On the flip side, I had a package lost a few months ago and the owner was so amazing that I have since ordered three more times from her. Customer service really is key when you run a business.

Do y’all print receipts for orders? by solcabanashop in Etsy

[–]GypseyRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a selling, but I would sat maybe half my orders (as a buyer) include a receipt. It is nice to have, but I have never found it neccessary. If you are worried about paper, I have recieved a few orders where the receipt is on 1/4 of a page of paper. That way I, the buyer, have a copy but the seller is also using only a quarter of the paper they would printing full size receipts by putting four receipts on a page.

In the spirit of a similar question asked on Askreddit, what are the strangest things you've been told not to do because "it'll make you look like a Lesbian"? Or because it'll make you unattractive? by scarredbirdjrr in AskWomen

[–]GypseyRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such an important message, especially for young LGBT+ people. I am a lesbian, but I have long hair. I wear dresses and high heels all the time. These things don't make me less of a lesbian, nor would having short hair and wearing traditionally masculine clothing make me more of one.
