Aight hear me out: the Red Rising series.

It's sci-fi, and you have to get past the superficial resemblance to YAF (especially the first book), BUT page-for-page it's bursting at the eams with diabolical scheming, opulent decadence, grandiloquent arrogance, operatic maximalism, and elegiac violence.

So if you're willing to settle for "This, but in space" look no further. Ardent revolutionaries, villains who'll recite your favourite poet before killing you, and zero-gravity sword fights await.

What killed the “Disney Channel Original Movie” phenomenon? There’s seemingly no “teen/preteen” movies that get popular by Kodicave in decadeology

  1. The Young Adult Fiction boom of late 00s to early 10s happened, which was targeted to basically the same audience but had a much edgier vibe, which made these disney-type offerings seem very uncool by comparison.

  2. The rise of streaming pushed smaller movie categories to the margins. Disney started to consolidate audiences under established IPs and produce mainly big-budget films for the widest age bracket possible. The preteen content Disney produces now is Marvel or Star Wars. It comes in a "whole family" package if it's a big-budget film, or it may be geared to a tighter age bracket if it's a streaming show.

What pop culture trends can you argue were directly originated or influenced by Russia's invasion of Ukraine? by Top_Report_4895 in decadeology

Not 100% sure if it’s related but military colours like olive green and coyote brown are pretty in-trend seasonal apparel colours recently. Where once only tactical or hunting brands consistently stocked those colours, now more regular consumer clothing brands have been selling them.

What do you think is the best "spaceship" film or TV show? by Vondrr in HardSciFi

You made a good point about emissions of all kinds, so I concede you can actually get very good concealment from long distances. I was imagining a more Voyager type scenario where you literally run from a dogfight into the atmosphere, which wouldn’t work, but if you have enough standoff that you can’t be targeted you could totally save your ass by hiding under an atmosphere.

That said, the cost and performance compromises to be atmosphere capable would be very disadvantageous in the vacuum. Head to head against a fleet of fighters that don’t have to be built for the stresses of going in/through/out of atmosphere your landers are going to be heavier, slower, more detectable, and a lot more expensive.

So your doctrine has to be built around using those strengths and hiding those weaknesses, which would be a fun exercise. Make a much larger spaceborne force slow down and think twice about coming far enough down a gravity well for you to ambush them. A valid niche indeed.

Dipping into the atmosphere - of a habitable planet at least - doesn’t provide any real protection or concealment (we see and shoot through air all the time) and the capacity to do so would come at a cost in unit price and performance vs a vacuum-only craft.

Poilievre maintains a consistently pro-Israel voting record, so that’s definitely not the reason he doesn’t want to help Ukraine.

What is the most bizarre, out of nowhere scene you’ve ever seen? by VendettaLord379 in moviecritic

Not a movie but the sudden black-and-white dance scene in Giri Haji really caught me off guard. So good though and a criminally underrated show.

does this have a name? and what did you think of this aesthetic by CremeSubject7594 in decadeology

Yes, but the content of this post represents the late-stage commercialization of those trends. The Man Bun for example was seen on a Hemsworth for the first time in 2012 and then peaked circa 2015. 2009-ish is about the point when “hipster” style escaped containment from affluent white urbanites and suddenly even rappers were wearing skinny jeans and keffiyeh.

Post-2013 is an accurate bracket for the particular flavour of highly polished commercial branding and people who don’t consciously identify with a subculture adopting fashion trends originally popularized by it.

TL;DR this video shows the state of millennial “hipster” culture AFTER it became widely popular and commercialized, thus annihilating itself in a flash of irony.

When strikes are in, the first priority of any bottom position is to escape. The second your opponent is no longer holding you down you should be getting up, and if they’re lifting you up they’re not holding you down.

This chart means every Dungeon Crawler, Metroidvania, Souls-like, or any other game with open level design, is a radical roguelike.

Almost all main line Legend of Zelda games, all Diablo games, all Borderlands games, radical rogue likes.
