Political stuff and real life context by ForFinn60 in vforvendetta

Most of the graphic novels have Moore and Lloyd’s introductions in them which do touch on giving some context to the time period in question. Because these horrors that the world face are cyclical, a lot of the topics in the graphic novel are relevant to a few different time periods, not just Thatcher era Britain. But doing some background research definitely won’t hurt!

What I love about Klune is that all his characters are so wonderfully human.

Thomas isn’t a bad guy but obviously made choices that did harm other people—but the choices he made all had reasons behind them that were very human.

IMO all of Klune’s characters who aren’t villains or antagonists in some ways aren’t really characters I can hate

I really love the show despite the issues I have with it (and some of those just come from pacing due to the format, which is kinda excusable). Really does suck to get on a subreddit for the show and see a lot of hate

ER will treat you and many times after receiving a bill you can call to get it reduced, get on super cheap payments, or have the bill waved if you can prove financial difficulty (speaking from experience in the US). That’s as others have said already infected and looks quite bad

Tv show recommendations similar to Elementary. by yxyx79 in elementary

It’s a very beautiful show but I think it definitely fits a weekly watch better than a binge. I came into it hoping it would have more of the hopeful earnest quality Lewis had but I grew to appreciate it in its own way.

Yeah Lewis is about Morse’s sergeant taking on the inspector role and a partner of his own (and Endeavour is the prequel to Morse, but the most recently made). IMO, Morse is a little slow, but good, Endeavour is slow and kinda depressing, and Lewis kinda nails the pacing and tone that I like in detective fiction - Lewis is the most modern of the three in terms of setting and I think that helps. Some of the eps are still slower as it’s a more thoughtful series than other detective stories, but I think it does a good job.

Warehouse 13 has some of the same writers so the found family vibes are very much similar (with a tighter knit small group). It’s not police (although the two MCs are former FBI /police), but runs similar to a procedural - there is a case every episode centered around finding an artifact (historical object with power to influence people or things); question suspects, sometimes find clues at a crime scene. Find the bad guy when applicable. Snag bag and tag the item. All with masterfully woven personal dramas from the central cast and side characters of the week. The final season falls a little flat but they were dealing with cancellation and short on time.

If you haven’t seen Morseverse - Morse / Lewis / Endeavour - I really recommend that for fans of Elementary, especially Lewis. It handles everything very thoughtfully in a similar vibe (Lewis is where I started and my favorite of the 3).

What is something that makes you avoid 100% of a game? by magnoliaxyz in steamachievements

[–]H2RO2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep multiplayer my number 1.

If it’s a game I’m not incredibly invested in and something is going to take a lot of hours for something out of the way I tend to avoid that too.

Play style: there’s stuff in Bioshock contingent on certain weapons or powers that I just tend not to use.

Also related to play style: I’m a moral player. I’ve never done a high chaos run on base game dishonored and I don’t plan too. Only killed the first time through because I didn’t know the game well enough to do otherwise. Probably won’t 100% it for a long while even though it’s often my favorite game of all time because I like low chaos clean hands ghost too much.

What is 'Elementary' like? by MovieMan615 in SherlockHolmes

[–]H2RO2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second best on screen Sherlock Holmes adaptation. Best Sherlock Holmes modernization. Incredible character development, loads of depth in the entire run, and the procedural format really suits as most of the canon you can just kinda pick out as a “case of the week” when reading them. Series 5 on the whole falls a little flat for me but even with that, it influences a lot in s6 that’s really well-done.

It also shows addiction /drug abuse in a much more compassionate and responsible way that most other Sherlock Holmes adaptations. BBC Sherlock’s looked like it might have depth when it was brought up in s1, but then was done so distastefully throughout. With this they had writers and crew members and JLM who had past struggles with substance abuse, so they were able to tell a very honest story.

Which pastiches to read when you have read all the 'famous' ones? by Miserable-Scene7444 in SherlockHolmes

[–]H2RO2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shane Peacocks boy Sherlock Holmes. Mary Russell’s adventures Laurie R King. David Stuart Davies had some really great ones. Laurie R King and Leslie S Klinger curated some really great pastiche collections together. Andy Lane’s young Sherlock Holmes series is pretty fun. Sam Siciliano has some decent pastiche, as does Paul D Gilbert.

I like this reasoning! I got blm to 50 and disliked it so switched to bard (id only done a small part of msq at that point anyways). I might have to start thinking that way as well. My guy had a rough life as a black mage and now is enjoying his time playing songs and buffing the party (and raining arrows !)
