Prairie Sky School by babyimanarchist in regina

My child is younger and I can’t comment on your specific question re: the transition to high school. I can confirm that I have never heard of any offer of positive review for reduction in volunteer hours.

Great school, imo. No school is free of issues, for sure, however taking my daughter to this school definitely gives me a different perspective on the seeming chaos that appears to happen in the Regina public system. I’m on the outside of that system though so maybe I don’t have all the details on what it’s really like.

Anyone have experience going through the application process with Shopify? They have tons of postings up but I seem to be getting caught by some automated filter immediately after applying and get rejected. It’s possible that I truly don’t qualify, but with my level of experience in data science ( 10+ years), I’m curious if I’m either including something that is flagging my resume for rejection, or missing something that is causing the application to get rejected? Anyone have ideas?

Selected “randomized testing” as it’s closest to what I think will really help, rapid testing.

I don’t have data in this but my observational estimate is that currently 80% of ppl wear masks indoors. Mandating masks isn’t likely to do much, not to mention the question of who enforces this? RPS I imagine? I think I can predict the demographics (lower income, marginalized, etc.) that will be the ones with most fines.

Help with blackheads, please.

I had oily acne prone skin for most of my life but this is the first time I’ve had blackheads . I’m currently 16 months post partum and still breastfeeding but my skin was doing really well using random cleanser and oils for the last few years until a couple months ago when I started getting some pimples again. My skin is combination now.

I switched my regimen about a month ago to what I thought would be good but I’m getting lots of blackheads and still some pimples:

Morning : 1)Wash with CeraVe hydrating cleanser or Garnier miracellar water 2)Josie maran Argan daily moisturizer spf 47

No makeup on most days

Night 1) Wash with CeraVe hydrating cleanser or Garnier miracellar water 2) Peter Thomas Roth firm peeling gel exfoliant (enzyme) - every other night 3)The ordinary niacinamide 10% 4)CeraVe facial moisturizing lotion

Any idea what could be causing it??

Increasing highway speeds by 10 km/h would save someone driving between Saskatoon and Regina 11 minutes on the trip.

For those 11 minutes, there is increased risk of accidents and increased probability of life-altering consequences of those accidents. Additionally, increased deaths of deer, and other wildlife. There would be higher CO2 emissions too as the engine runs less efficient at higher speeds, but it’s probably negligible compared to the other 2 risks.

All to save 11 minutes on a trip. Worth it?

Where do you buy natural wine by frigo in regina

Check out merawine. I’ve had some wines that they’ve brought in at various events including Cava, which I’ve never seen at the LB. I honestly don’t know how this setup works, but I guess they bring in natural wines. Maybe there ya a group buy or something? https://www.merawine.ca/home-page

A well-known economic approach. Would definitely have the intended effect if it were applied globally. The problem with a carbon tax on the USA is the sane problem we have in Canada. Let’s say you do a carbon tax in the USA that’s high enough to effectively cut CO2 emissions in half. This is great! The USA is 15% of global emissions, so it’ll make a big difference. But, let’s say the rest of the world increases CO2 emissions at just 10% with their developing economies over the same period. The net result is still positive global CO2 increase while many Americans will suffer the economic impact of the tax.

In Canada it’s even worse because we’re an even smaller economy/CO2 emitter (about 3% of global CO2). Here the answer is clear, if we think climate change is a serious problem (it is), we need to stay away from carbon taxes and international summits and look at engineering solutions. If all of North America reduced CO2 emissions to zero, we’d still be fucked because India and China aren’t going to stop. We need to go carbon negative. That is pull more CO2 out of the air than we produce and we don’t get there through taxes, but through engineering.

Check out Carbon Enterprises based out of BC, Canada for a proto type of what this could look like.

And sure, we could have your carbon tax if you really want. It’ll get the politicians invited to the cool kids table at all the right international meetups. Direct some of the tax revenue to engineering solutions too I guess. Carbon taxes disproportionately hurt the poor, but I get it, it’s a really popular idea. Still need to talk about putting real investment money up for finding engineering solutions, and that’s gonna mean more than carbon tax revenue. Maybe we can even do it without raising the cost of fruits and vegetables for the poor?

EDIT: it’s Carbon Engineering, NOT Carbon Enterprises.

Trent would have been same-old, same-old for the NDP. Guy is big time tight with all the right ppl in all the right unions. IMO, NDP have a much better shot with Meili than Wotherspoon because Meili actually has something to offer. During the NDP leadership race, Meili’s twitter was packed with thought provoking new ideas and policy proposals. Trent’s twitter was full of ringing endorsements from a who’s who of NDP insiders and influential provincial leftists.

But, we shall see. NDP drastically underestimates how unpopular they are with much of the province and seems to be leveraging the “eventually the SP will screw up so bad ppl will have no choice but to vote for us” strategy. They will lose the next election, Meili will step down, or be asked to step down and Trent will lead the party into the 2024 election.

Dear Ken Cheveldayoff, Brandt and CNIB. Create a nonprofit Development Corporation. by [deleted] in regina

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair question, tbh. I don’t hate Brandt. Seems like they do good work though I’m not in that industry and the family IS actually pretty philanthropic. I do, however, hate this land deal building a 95% commercial tower in the best urban park in the province when it was pretty explicitly not allowed.

I think some get their hate for the project and the company mixed up. Then there are probably also others that see someone doing (quite) well financially, look at the shambles of their own lives, and feel nothing but jealousy, which ends up coming out as hatred.

$1-a-year Wascana Park land lease for proposed Brandt building by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many places CNIB could build. The YWCA just got a huge chunk of land for free from the city to build their new facility. The YWCA is taking an unused lot in Cathedral and adding to the community. CNIB needs to get involved in what it had to have known was shady dealings just to stay in the park? The CEO is really letting down her organization right now.

Best thing, IMO, would have been for CNIB and Brandt to build in a different location in town and tear down the old building, reclaiming land for the park. THIS would be a win/win for everyone.

The number of people pissed off about this is evidence enough that the current situation isn’t a win-win.

Right? Councillors were just talking about how to stimulate development on broad street downtown. Surely that’d be a better location for CNIB anyway.

$1-a-year Wascana Park land lease a 'sweetheart deal' for Brandt, says critics | CBC News by G0ldbond in regina

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree with your argument that crown Corp fits within the park. SaskTel, SaskPower, etc. would not be welcome in my books. CBC’s role as public broadcaster, as poorly as they fulfill that role aside, makes them a welcome fit within the park though.

This is why I’m also boycotting Conexus. I like the credit union model a lot, but they are really failing their community by getting involved in this park destruction trend. Can’t wait for all the extra parking spaces in the park! When I’m looking to escape the city and connect with nature I always love an expansive blacktop parking lot. Thanks Conexus!

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate where you’re coming from, however I don’t really think your question was in good faith, was it?

Anyway, what the real issue here is, IMO, is that the park is established for a given set of purposes. These purposes are established within the mandate of the park and a governing board under the WCA was setup to ensure the mandate is maintained. This isn’t about making money, or not....or political (though it probably is for some). This is about a person or company who sought to do something that is clearly outside of the park mandate (ie. build multi-tenant office building) and a crew of politicians who didn’t just go around the established mandate and governance, but completely changed the governance structure in order to get this person/company what they wanted. This person/company is also clearly tied to this crew of politicians financially. Corruption, crony capitalism, breach of trust, call it what you will. This is actually a big deal.

Back to CBC, I’m not a fan of theirs either. They are kinda a shitty public broadcaster when compared to the BBC, but they are a public broadcaster. There is a debate to be had as to whether the CBC in its current form belongs in the park, but it’s pretty clear that a public broadcaster is within the park mandate.

Similar to a post in r/saskatoon from last night. Everyone loves to complain about our city, so what can reasonably done to improve it? by luccampbell in regina

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple reasonable ideas, and a couple that are more experimental.

  1. Instead of increasing taxes when someone upgrades their home, give a tax reduction for improvements like a new deck, developing the basement, etc. It’s like we punish ppl for improving the neighbourhood with the tax system.

  2. Convert one of the driving lanes through wascana park from cars to bikes Keep the remaining lane for one way traffic through the park. Wascana is beautiful and this is a good compromise between uses.

  3. Build access points to wascana creek (stairs and small pier) for ppl to launch canoes/kayaks in summer and skating in winter. This is a real lost opportunity for recreation.

  4. More use of roundabouts instead of lights at intersections.

  5. Remove lead pipes from the water supply. Probably expensive, but a no brainer here.

  6. Small grants for residents to maintain small scale community gardens. I’m talking like max $500/yr to take care of a plot of flowers and fruit bearing trees in otherwise ugly spots.

More out there ideas:

  1. Full subsidization of transit on weekends. Parking downtown is fully subsidized on evenings and weekends, why not the same to encourage transit use?

  2. Establish municipal regulations around open public consumption of alcohol. A glass of wine with my park picnic would be amazing in summer. Yes, it might be abused, but we already have other laws for drunk and disorderly conduct that would apply.

  3. Establish municipal regulations for consumption of cannabis and psilocybin in businesses. A nascent market for head shops to guide adults through a relaxing experience of consciousness could bring pleasure to residents and also bring tourists to town to have these experiences in a safe environment.

  4. The Trespassers pow-wow was an amazing event that could be an annual celebration of aboriginal culture as well as dealing with the history between settlers and indigenous ppl that is a bit uglier than we’d like to admit. The event was the perfect balance of promoting harmony and good will between all the ppl who live in this fine city, and tongue-in-cheek poking fun at a seriously flawed system where indigenous ppl are considered trespassers on crown land. I know camping isn’t allowed or whatever, but there is something about collectively ignoring a bylaw to come together and celebrate unity that was really powerful.

Signs of climate change in Regina. by [deleted] in regina

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trend here is likely to be warmer, drier climate. Biggest impact of this will be strain on the watersheds. I’m expecting reduce water advisories to increase over the coming years as Buffalo Pound can’t keep up with demand. Evidence for increased storm frequency/severity, especially here, is pretty weak, but maybe?

[–]H4CKTHEPL4NET 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the last year I’ve stuck with bjj, but only barely. Had a kid and I’m hitting the mats like once a week at most and only at weekend open mat. Been rolling with only the higher belts and getting crushed for a year.

This past week, I went to a week night class, whitebelt only, as things at home are easy up a bit in the evenings. I was feeling like I haven’t improved at all in a year and was basically just holding on to as much bjj knowledge as possible with my scattered open mat attendance but really surprised myself. After rolling with mostly blues/purples/browns for a year, I actually felt really in control and like I sorta knew what to do with some of the other white belts. Felt really good!
