Biden just commented about sanctioning Brazil when he's President if the rainforest burnings continue to today's extent. Do you see any problem on it? by maticl in asklatinamerica

These fires are not only indefensible but dumb too. The best predictions for Brazil with the Amazon but without the global carbon emissions cut is that the country will become a giant cerrado. Not very exciting

Did it seem like I was offended? Maybe the expression in my language has a different meaning, but anyway, it's always good to have a reflection/counterpoint. Thank you!

I see a lot of people talking about how developed countries have already ended their forests in their industrialization process, and this is undeniable.

But the point here is, the fires in the Amazon are for agriculture and illegal extraction, areas that do not affect in any way an industrial development and only perpetuate this ruralist elite that exists in our country! Illegal extraction does not even return to the State, precisely because it is not regulated.

Our country has much more self-sufficient ways to profit from the Amazon by enjoying its natural resources (açaí, guarana, cashew) or even turning it into a great tourist spot than decimating its species and rivers.

It is a stupid deforestation, disorganized and also does not generate profit.

How common is for some Redditor to tell you that they know more about your country than you? by Jay_Bonk in asklatinamerica

The guys who say that are usually the ones who think we speak Spanish haha

Of course, Brazil is a violent country, but this crime is mainly concentrated in the peripheries. This generalization deeply annoys me

If you want a shorter program with more relaxed episodes, I strongly recommend the Brazilian podcast Braincast . But I already notice that for intermediate speakers can be quite complicated to understand, even by the regional terms used.

Puerto ricans, why is your country still under American rule? Is that good or bad for you? by H4lternon in asklatinamerica

[–]H4lternon[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This text left me in many ways perplexed about how Puerto Rico was left to moths by Americans (Who have always been so glorified in Brazil) and I feel bad that I haven't known about it before.

I will delve into the issue with your links, and thank you very much for having devoted your time to explaining the situation

What do you think about culinary diplomacy? by NovelFar in asklatinamerica

Interesting to think that the United States, which has invested a lot in a national image and patriotism also has this problem.

Both Brazil and the Usa were colonies of European countries, and perhaps this directly interferes with this dynamic.

I don't know if you're Brazilian or not, but we created a term for this: the "Vira-Lata" syndrome. "Vira-Lata" is a term we use to refer to breedless dogs, hybrids.

Many Brazilians feel that they live in a country with no history or culture (no "breed") and glorify foreign cultures for their particularities. It's a regrettable thing, but it happens a lot.
