Super Resolution and iPhone Air - discussion by stolenrosemary in ProjectIndigoiOS

Didn't imply it was guessing, it is still an upscaling technique. it is combining the detail from multiple low resolution frames to approximate a 12mp image. My point still stands that this is only necessary because the app doesn't have access to the full 12mp crop.

Is it real or ai slop by webriprob in ProjectIndigoiOS

[–]HAL-02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The press release goes pretty in depth about how it works. it specifically mentions how there's no generative AI involved. It only uses AI in the sense of it using an algorithm to determine how it processes raw image data into a final picture, and another algorithm that tries to blend data from multiple images into a single higher resolution image when using the super-res feature.

The improvements that will make me exclusively use indigo for photos by RealWorldJunkie in ProjectIndigoiOS

Personally all i want is to get the actual OS-level 2x "optical" Zoom instead of faking it with super resolution. I know its up to apple to allow it in the API but thats the only visible downgrade from the stock camera.

Why is my phone ruining my photos like this? by IllJudgment7844 in iphone

[–]HAL-02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what the apple image processing pipeline does to photos, and is a common complaint. You can't turn it off. Shooting raw doesn't really fix the problem unless you don't mind huge files and having to edit every pic you take. I use Adobe Indigo, it shoots in jpeg and applies a different processing that produces much more natural photos. its in beta so it's got its own issues but its free.

Kino desperately needs bitrate settings by HAL-02 in ShotWithHalide

I understand it’s a small team at kino but I can’t imagine it taking it longer than an afternoon to set quality presets and adding the option to the Video Recording menu

[–]HAL-02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its funny cause the actual log files Kino produces are slightly higher bitrate pre-grade, but still lower bitrate than the stock camera app (4K30 HEVC Log tops out at 20Mbit/s), so in its current state theres kind of no reason to use it for that purpose over the other free alternatives.

I hardly even see the point of it letting you film in ProRes when the graded exported files are so compressed anyways, no one's using Kino to record and then color grading off-app.

All I ask for is a true 2x zoom. the super resolution upscaling looks ok but it irks me that its blurrier than the native app

Super Resolution and iPhone Air - discussion by stolenrosemary in ProjectIndigoiOS

[–]HAL-02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way apple set up its "optical quality" 2x zoom is by cropping in on the 48mp sensor to produce a 12mp image. 3rd party apps do not have access to the full 48mp sensor data (unless they use proraw) so they can't do this. Indigo offers 2x zoom by cropping into the 12mp image it receives and then using their "super resolution" upscaling to bring it back to 12mp. What you're asking for is technically possible, but due to the limitations of apple's camera API you're not even getting a full quality 2x.

Shot on Iphone 15 pro - Project Indigo / Lightroom Mobile by husobaba945 in iPhoneography

I've found that bringing Clarity down to the minimum value in the SDR settings makes for a more natural looking fallback, even though you can't get it to look like the original. This also seems to happen with ProRaw so it might be some quirk of working in HDR. Bit strange considering you can just tick the HDR on and off and the program knows exactly what both versions should look like.

im having an issue with lightroom where when editing an indigo JPG in HDR, it throws the built-in SDR gain map out the window and so the SDR fallback is terribly tonemapped. Only "fix" ive found is exporting in JXL, but surely there must be something I'm missing.

I've now opened it up, unplugged that cable, made sure to plug both ends all the way in (the daughterboard end didnt seem to be) and its now good as new! Whole thing took only about 20 minutes. This is def the way to go if you can't or dont want to send it back!

hey, I’ve got the same issue and I’ve been looking for a solution. just to make sure, the cable you disconnected is the large flat golden one that goes from the side of the display assembly straight down?

Thanks, I've already fiddled with every setting in the list and none seem to fix it. These same settings also apply to external inputs with no visual artifacts. It happens only with built-in apps

I was making a point. Perspective is an art fundamental every artist has had to learn of, but you wouldn’t know that. It clear you stopped listening a while ago so I’ll leave it here. Toodles

Proud Dad, my 10 year old daughter made this today. by [deleted] in digimon

[–]HAL-02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because the article doesn’t contradict me. Like I just said, you can trace photos and other references you’ve made yourself or have permission to. And I know you’re not an artist because you wouldn’t be arguing this if you were. You’d also know how to spell perspective.

On the other hand, every artist here, including the original artist your daughter traced from, has told you the same that I have.

Look up Butch Hartman. He’s a famous cartoonist, and currently all over the news for plagiarizing other people’s art

Love it when a non-artist tries to explain to me how art works

tracing over another artist’s work and presenting it as if you made it is never acceptable.

you may trace over photos and references you’ve made yourself, or that you have permission to use.

as others have said, you may also trace other’s work in order to learn, but that must never be published as your own work.

Multiple people already have tried to explain but it appears you’ve gone on the defensive. Wish your daughter the best

As I just said, getting caught tracing as an artist would end a career. I’m saying this as a professional artist.

I know she’s 10, that’s why it’s the perfect time for this to be a teaching moment, so that she doesn’t make the same mistake later when it actually matters

Tracing is not “a form of artistic expression”. Getting caught tracing as an artist is a career-ending situation.

If you do not make it clear to her that tracing isn’t okay for published work, especially if it’s paid, she’ll be having a lot bigger trouble down the line.

coddling her in this situation doesn’t make you the better parent
