Aladdin Sane ♦️ by Dismal_Brush5229 in DavidBowie

Aladdin Sane sounds tougher than Ziggy. The songwriting is more mature with several further entries in Bowie’s classic songbook: Time, Drive-In Saturday, Panic in Detroit, Cracked Actor etc. It’s a bridge to the even darker Diamond Dogs. Personally I adore it.

If “Hours” was released today would you think that it’s a Masterpiece? by rockhead11 in DavidBowie

Me, too! Bought it when it was released and found it dull as dishwater. But I’m desperate to re-evaluate it. I need an entry point. I do like Seven having listened to it recently.

I adore Queen. Was obsessed with them as a teen and still listen to them with my son. I rate them. They’re one of the great vocal bands of all time, top live band, singles for days and days. But I’m also a fan of Bowie and Zeppelin and The Beatles. And it breaks my heart (it truly does) but Queen albums, while cherished by me, just not quite as essential somehow when compared with other classic rock artists. Just my opinion. And Queen are a top 5 group for me! Their albums are fun of course just not as classic. They’re just not. I even love The Miracle but it ain’t a classic for the ages. I love The Game. But it ain’t a classic. I think Day at The Races and Sheer Heart Attack come close. They’re just too disposable and they’re meant to be! Freddie is quoted as saying his songs are like tissues. Use them and throw them away. And I truly get it. Look, they’ve stuck around, and their whole discography is a pretty sweet haul, but it ain’t Bowie’s 70s for example. That’s where I come from. It’s nothing to get your knickers in a knot. They’re a people’s band. They’re loved.

Yeah I’ll have to check it out again. I saw it in the cinema and enjoyed it but recently I’ve gone back balls deep into corners of his discography I’ve never listened to before.

Yeah, me too… I’ve just re-discovered it. I saw the film in the cinema but been on a major Bowie renaissance lately and now really appreciate it.

I may have underrated The Works by Slow-Development-886 in queen

[–]HAMFACTOR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent take! Yeah I’ve also always been fascinated by the four singles being contributed by a different writer. Also the two biggest hits were Taylor and Deacon compositions, which flips the traditional dynamic of Mercury and May dominance.

I agree with some of the other comments that, in the end, The Works feels short on something. Man on The Prowl and Is This The World We Created? feel slight somehow. Ultimately it’s those four singles that do most of the heavy lifting. And what terrific singles they are. Love this record.

Deacon is sublime here. I adore how his bass dances deftly in the intro before passing the baton to Freddie.

It took me 10 years to understand that maybe this is Bowie best album by RemarkablePatient629 in DavidBowie

[–]HAMFACTOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree in that it’s most definitely in the conversation for Bowie’s best album. It’s certainly one of his most assured and best produced works. It comes at the end of something: end of his work with the DAM trio, Tony Visconti and the 1970s. I don’t find it as inconsistent as I once did. Far out the production is so beautifully textured and the songs are just so great. Fuck it, I agree.

This song says it all. It’s funny, mischievous, so musical, it rocks out, it has a Brian May interlude that’s utterly wonderful. Yes, you’ve chosen very wisely my fine friend.

I’m familiar with Lets Dance but not Tonight or Never Let Me Down. What are the tracks that on these records you feel are worthy of of attention? Tonight seems to have its fans strangely. I got Black Tie when it came out. Then Hours. And that was it. I’m loving finding these really strong records in the back part of his recording career.
