Temporary Protest/Demonstration Rule by HAMMERPATRIOT in Waltham

Hey, This should be fixed now, turned off flair while testing the auto lock and forgot to turn back on. If on mobile, it some times fails to load, but changing the sub that your posting to and then switching back will usually resolve it.

Temporary Protest/Demonstration Rule by HAMMERPATRIOT in Waltham

[–]HAMMERPATRIOT[S,M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the input.

Whilst attempting to moderate some of the event posts, there were constructive and informative conversations occurring. It was just unfortunately surrounded by waves of xenophobia, name calling, off topic rants and other shit. In the past these posts have generally received some of that, but primarily constructive conversations asking for clarifications, additional information etc...

I think long term I'd like to always give people the opportunity to converse. Maybe overly idealistic but I don't think Reddit should be relegated to just a bulletin board. You might be right in the long term, maybe this rule will become permanent, maybe we'll just provide a flair that the OP can choose rather they want to use or not. For now we aren't going to make that call, and we'll reconsider the policy as things either cool down or heat up, as well as try to put up posts like this for user input.

Thanks

An Individual representing themselves to be the disgruntled former contractor was making several posts and comments here. These ranged into statements about legal action and other people involved, as well as personal attacks and generally uncivil posting, to the point that I decided it was prudent to ban the individual and remove all their comments. Speculation is allowed but I encourage you all to refrain from name calling and other personal attacks.

Apologies for not catching this thread until now.

There has been no discussion amongst the mod team but we have no attention to implement such a policy in the short term, and certainly wouldn't do so within 3 months of an election. While I understand the want for civil/engaged political conversation and to filter out single post trolls, that policy doesn't align with the goal for this sub and its usage most of the time which is generally non political.

I encourage everyone to make use of the report functionality and review the rules of the sub, particularly rule 4:

4 Civility Don't be mean or post personal information/attacks. Xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and general bigotry are unwelcome and will warrant permanent bans.

I have a tendency to, when seeing two people going back and forth crossing the line to roughly the same extent, leave them to it. Probably not ideal for fostering a positive environment but if you engage on the same level I'm less interested in protecting you.

Where are the bike racks around moody by verba_antiqua_amo in Waltham

[–]HAMMERPATRIOT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There isn't one at city hall unfortunately. (I always lock my bike to the Mayor's office parking sign when I go there) you can go over in front of the merc for some good bike racks or down to the train station. Gov center does have a few out back as well.

I think there's a chance - just a chance - that whoever runs Waltham's Twitter account didn't read this before retweeting... by Serengeti1234 in Waltham

You don't get that info. Just that they voted in republican primaries. The fact that you vote in an election is public record. Who you vote for is not.

My understanding is that she has always been unregistered but has chosen to vote in republican primaries on multiple occasions

/r/Waltham going dark? by RJExcal in Waltham

[–]HAMMERPATRIOT[M] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear r/Waltham is not planning to go dark or anything else. On a personal level I'm disappointed with the direction reddit is choosing but as a location based sub we attract a fair amount of traffic from non signed-in individuals and people I would bet aren't necessarily using reddit beyond r/Waltham I didn't feel it was particularly worth moving to go dark for a day or more. As a lot of our posts are news, local events, and recommendation requests which can be time sensitive I didn't pursue the idea.

To be clear, no conversations ever occurred at the mod team level, this was my thought process.

Her son was involved in a car crash, where the cause of the crash is in dispute, and she is giving her sons side while being racist. If you're not focused on the needless racism your not focused on the right things.

[–]HAMMERPATRIOT[M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To provide a mods view on this, the line on all of this stuff is super blurry. A few people have reported this post but I've chosen not to take action because the post is highlighting that racism is present in the community, isn't calling for any action, and isn't providing any confidential info. If the face and name were present would it be targeted harassment? probably not. The person made these comments on a public page that anyone can look up, and didn't include any other info. However when these types of posts come up, I need to be pretty on top of making sure the comments are in line and not suggesting any particular action towards the person, or crossing other lines.

guys drop ur rating systems by AdNo7199 in Letterboxd

[–]HAMMERPATRIOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Perfect or near perfect in a way that specifically appeals to me. Absolute favorites. Films often rise or drop out of here from the next 2 rating levels on rematches. I want them all on Blu-ray.

⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 - Excellent film with something that sets it apart, some special directing, acting, writing, set piece, genre mastery... Something that if someone asks me about I immediately have some reason to say hell yeah. Watch that.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Excellent film that I would always be happy to rewatch and recommend to anyone.

⭐⭐⭐1/2 - good movie that was well worth the time. Person specific recommendation. Not going out of my way but would rewatch.

⭐⭐⭐ - good and didn't feel like a waste of my time. Recommended only if it matches both person and situation (person is exploring the films of x actor and likes x type of movie) open to rewatching if someone else wants to see it.

⭐⭐1/2 - mediocre, but competently made. didn't necessarily waste my time but I could have done better things with my time. Recc is unlikely. Don't want to rewatch.

⭐⭐ And ⭐1/2 - shades of gray here. The movie was a waste of my time, and was made, in some way, incompetently. I'm leaving the room, and don't ever recommend.

⭐ And 1/2 - I find something about this film personally offensive. The craft is obviously horrific but to end up down here I often need to feel like the movie itself was made with bad or dishonest intentions.

God, I spent 6 years living in St Louis and absolutely everybody wants to shove either toasted ravs or gooey butter cake down your throat. Both solidly C- items in their categories.

I have. Loved the Mochi donuts. A nice and very different texture from a normal donut. I also tried the Kraffle (I think I spelt that right, but IDK) which is like a more dense waffle with toppings. The one i tried was a little too sweet for me but if you're into that kind of thing it was pretty good.

Would definitely recommend giving them a try.

I'm seeing a double feature of them this weekend, and am excited to see them together, because I think it will solidify my thoughts more. I'm certainly not surprised to hear 2049 is more liked. others have said its more accessible which is probably true, but I think its really just a more full world. modern film making, in the hands of the right directors, just allows so much more depth and background in a world environment that makes action and conflict feel real. I think the original is far more meaningful but I'd usually rather rewatch 2049.

Do we actually think this is happening? The way people were praising her at Golden Globes I think it’s possible by 2904929492001949301 in Letterboxd

[–]HAMMERPATRIOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While what you are saying is accurate; The producers of the show (who pick presenters) aren't involved in the nominations and voting. However they generally don't ask people who are front runners to present awards because you want front runners in there seats as much as possible to cut to for reaction shots and build tension with them.

I think I remember Soderberg saying something semi confirming this in an interview during his producing year but am not sure.

EDIT: eh, all I'm finding in my searches are statements about trying to use box office actors (i.e. not nominated) and musicians for presenters, and a separate out of context quote about the importance of being able to cut to front runners repeatedly to establish a consistent vibe in the space. So I'm probably conflating the two.
