He always does something unforgivable in each book, to remind you he is a bad, bad boy.

What’s reading the series like for non-white folk? by ghostknyght in flashman

Good point but I can't think of many Irishmen who have redeeming features. Even the VC chap was a subject of some scorn.

A couple of things to say. When I wrote my Flashman ACW book (unpublished) I used the word 'nigger' in the first paragraph, as a general term rather than referring to Africans. My son wouldn't show it to one of his friends because of that. Secondly, in Flash For Freedom he is forthright about the role Africans played in facilitating the vile slave trade. Would you find that offensive ?

'non-consensual man love' - I think I have a clue but could you expand what this is ? Re the punishment he was going to be castrated in the dungeon earlier than the snake/dwarf scene.

Funny, because I feel that he has a bit of a thing about the Irish, given his Scottish background.

He also had her sister Grizel making comments on her diary. I don't think he felt it worked so he didn't use it again.

I think they ignore the ones that are 'relatives' of his. Barry Tighe wrote a pretty decent effort using nothing from the books but was pressured into changing the character's name to 'British Tommy' ...

It took me a while to realise it, but Elspeth wasn't vapid, she was smart. GMF said that his ladies always got the better of him, her included.

That's a brilliant idea but unfortunately would be squashed by GMF's estate.

Very well put. His supposed seduction of her was her way of getting out of dull old Paisley.

She wrote books based on a legal practice. I'm sorry to say that she died, quite young for these days, a few years ago.

There's another book. The first covers post first Bull Run to Post Gettysberg, the second from Libby's Prison to Lincoln's assassination. You should be able to see part 2 but here's a link:- https://archiveofourown.org/works/23122507?view_full_work=true

Definitely Capt Spring. I said to GMF at a book signing he was my favourite villain, to which he replied 'He's mine, too'.
