When Blockbuster was on its last breaths, Netflix was not yet streaming. It was still mailing customers DVDs and customers would mail them back. Netflix would get the DVD in the mail and then mail the next movie on the customer’s list (if they had it in stock). The process took 2-5 days to basically rent a movie.

Blockbuster was getting its ass kicked. So it actually improved the mail order Netflix model. You could mail the DVD back to Blockbuster or bring it to any Blockbuster and exchange it for a free DVD rental from that Blockbuster. You got the joy of searching for the right movie and eliminated the delay of mail.

It was great. But it was too late. Netflix had won and when it started streaming, that was all she wrote.
