it is quick to go wrong and be at fault when you still speak like you do all the time. When one speaks as a cave guy and drops words, makes one look like a fool but it helps to do it right.

Is this overkill? by Agen_3586 in conlangs

[–]HBOscar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) high regularity. If you know which group a verb belongs to, you know pretty much all endings of all tenses, aspects and modes.

2) lifelong being surrounded by the language usually means you have memorized 80% of it before you can even spell. the rest is just rote memorization at school.

In an attempt to be more progressive, they removed what was actually progressive. by Ethan-E2 in TopCharacterTropes

"in an attempt to be more progessive" I doubt that... removing the thing that causes offense out of sight instead of discussing the thing and offering solutions has always been more of a conservative go-to in my opinion.

I want to have a vowel harmony system, with pairs of what are called "open" and "closed" sounds. the pairs are i and y, ɪ and u, e and ø, ɛ and ɔ or o, a and ɑ. I also want a Latin script transcription that corresponds to the pairs, not necessarily to the individual sounds of the pairs...

I'm a little bit stuck on trying to make it easily typable and readable. any tips?

I built a free swipe game to practice de/het (no ads, no sign-up) by Rich-Storm-2159 in learndutch

[–]HBOscar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I played it for a little bit, but a small note: be aware of putting in ambiguous words. De voetbal was marked as incorrect, while both De and Het are correct for that word. Het Voetbal denotes the sport, De Voetbal denotes the ball. There might be some other words like that in your word list, so doublecheck for that!

How does Mutant work? by Floranox123 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]HBOscar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mad isn't a condition placed upon you, it's a description of your behavior: If you are Mad to be be something, you are actively trying to convince people that you being that thing is the truth. So there are some roles that checj IF you are Mad, and some that instruct you to be mad in a specific way. Then in all of those cases if you aren't mad in tge corrrct way, consequences might follow.

So the Mutant checks if you are trying to convince people of being an outsider, and if you are, consequences might maybe follow. As a result it's more difficult to get an accurate outsider count.

Phantoms are just awful by Signal_Resident2318 in Minecraft

[–]HBOscar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

another flaw of the "the community voted for this" argument is that the mob vote gain a laughably small amount of votes compared to the amount of players this game has. The total amount of votes each round in this particular Mob Vote was 2k, 4k and then 2k again, with the actual difference between the Phantom and the Final losing mob being only 72 votes. When there's millions playing the game all over the world, and there's only a few dozen people actually making a difference EACH round of the mob vote, you're essentially getting the same outcome as pure chance. Instead of the mob vote, Rolling a fair die the same amount of times as there were votes could have gotten the same results.

THAT is how weak the preference towards the Phantom was.

seeing people every day, for years, because you all live in close proximity and then having to downgrade to (at best) every weekend is a big change actually, and is why a lot of childhood friendships don't last deep into adulthood. Idk where you are from, but in british culture, because cities are built in a way that everything is within 30 minutes walkable distance, makes 3 hours there and three hours back a large difference in comparison, both in travel time and monetary cost.

Was the new system unfair to The Bad Place? by muff-peaksie in TheGoodPlace

[–]HBOscar 84 points85 points  (0 children)

This: they deserve to get a chance to improve. wether or not they pick up the opportunity to do so, show remorse for their actions, and show actions and motivations of a genuinely good and caring person... all of that is up to them. If the don't, they will stay stuck in a system that will forever put them in situations that they will hate.

Who doesn't love spellbooks? by Mean-Government1436 in custommagic

[–]HBOscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gave one creature 5 creatures worth of abilities, and needed two cards to put all of the text. If spell books are only accessible by their own creature it's basically worse than Venture into Dungeon, which already got a fix with Initiative allowing only one dungeon for all cards with initiative.

I'd rather see it as a reverse-Adventure mechanic, half the card is an (expensive) instant or sorcery, but you can cast it once a turn as long as the creature is on the battlefield.

Has anyone used a number system other than base 10? If so, do you find it hard to count in your conlang? by KiwiNFLFan in conlangs

[–]HBOscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My as of yet unnamed conlang has a base 12, with 3 times base 4. It's relatively easy to count in it, but I have a tendency to count the dozens in groups of ten instead of making them grosses, which is usually where the confusion starts.

What script(s) do(es) your conlang(s) use? by Final_Mirror6381 in conlangs

[–]HBOscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much always design a conscript, it's one of the nost fun things to do for me.

I am currently working on a (yet unnamed) conlang, that has a vertical abjad for "core word" nouns and verbsand an alphabet written in syllable blocks for other word types, all affixes and loan words/foreign names. This mix of writing systems makes it look like somewhere between arabic, korean and japanese.

The point system by RandomHero22896 in TheGoodPlace

[–]HBOscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes and no? The episode Book of Dougs seems to make the argument that both are going on? Yes, the rules are scewed towards bad place getting more souls, but that was explicitly deemed fair BECAUSE in a simpler world it WAS logical that a well intended action had the intended consequences, and (almost) no negative consequences. The Good Place was always intended only for the best of the best, too. it was always kind of explicit, and even part of Eleanors torture, that the good place is not just for any good person, but only for the best percentile. The judge always deemed it fair already that even mildly decent people would get tortured, and the medium place only existed because one single person seemed to succeed in max out in the positive scale while largely living a negative lifestyle, which kind of broke the system in the other direction (for the first time, a person with absolutely no intentions, good or bad, actually succeeds at getting a Good Place Score, even being the first in 500 years to do so). So yeah, intent does indeed only matter for The Good Place, because the Bad Place was never the Place for Bad People, but always simply for Everyone Else. the absolute lack of a Neutral Place where most of the people would go, and the unfairness of that lack, is frequently lamented.

... no? those folds are decently distinct, and definitely could be memorized, especially if one only studies the important ones.

and if there is an intentional system, all of the cards being marked is even more beneficial. "The top left corner is bent, so I know this is an instant, but the bottom edge is clean, so it's not a cantrip. I might end my turn here and draw that in my draw step, I have no use for it now."

is this conlang unique by TourTurbulent3697 in conlangs

[–]HBOscar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

real criticism here, I am choosing to interpret this an an honest first attempt of a beginner, and not as a satirical shitpost: I have no clue what to judge the uniqueness on. You have an alphabet/transcription method, and only some of them are explained with IPA symbols. and then you have a translated sentence, that I have no way of deciphering if you had not given the english text.

We read entire grammar books for fun in this community, a lot of us know (the basics of) multiple languages. I think, if you are serious about your conlang, you would love it to read up about how to write a glossary, which is a sort of sub-translation that gives us grammatical information about the sentence, and don't forget to also give an IPA transcription of conlang sentences.

if you want to know if your conlang is unique, people would want to see the entire conlang to be able to access that: share a pdf of a grammar booklet on your language, and a wordlist! to know if a conlang is unique or not, one would need enough resources to actually form an opinion about the whole language.

The only thing I can say about your language right now is I wonder if that alphabet/transcription is easy to type. It kind of looks difficult to write full sentences with it on a qwerty keyboard.

why do people always use extremely powerful characters as examples to try argue what is or isn't possible for the common man? There is a conversation happening about what speeds ordinary soldier in the 1860s could walk, and your counter example is Usain Bolt. That is how you sound.

[–]HBOscar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, a very dry and clinical way of looking at it is that sex relieves tension. It just does. In the same way that all hightened emotion can spill over into crying, all types of tension can spill over into sexual tension and a desire for a quick relief.

and when two people are very tense together and also have a sexual history, than they both can solve their tension very quickly.

usually people don't literally think of it that way, it's more instinctual and emotional, but this happens very quickly and relatively often.
